BACKGROUND: Workplace bullying, harassment and sexual abuse cause psychological harm, and can pose a significant threat to the success of an organization as well. This type of violence in the workplace, comprising negative actions and often abuse of power, can lead to trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD and in severe cases, suicide. These acts impact workplace performance, negatively impact psychological safety and lead to high turnover and loss of productivity in an organization.
OBJECTIVES: This narrative review outlines the key concepts of bullying, its impact on the individual, and the ways

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated hair loss condition with substantial psychosocial impact. The impact of AA on social interactions at work has not been established.
METHODS: We administered the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised Scale to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation database to evaluate workplace bullying in patients with AA.
RESULTS: Ultimately, 673/1,120 individuals who met inclusion criteria completed the survey. Most respondents were female (n = 537, 79.8%), Caucasian (n = 508, 75.5%), with an average age of 46.8 ± 14, and employed full-time (n = 427,

Children with chronic illnesses report being bullied by peers, yet little is known about bullying among children with heart conditions. Using 2018-2020 National Survey of Children's Health data, the prevalence and frequency of being bullied in the past year (never; annually or monthly; weekly or daily) were compared between children aged 6-17 years with and without heart conditions. Among children with heart conditions, associations between demographic and health characteristics and being bullied, and prevalence of diagnosed anxiety or depression by bullying status were examined. Differences w

Bullying occurs when an individual is repeatedly victimised by negative actions performed by peers. As oral features, like malocclusion and dental structural defects, can promote psychological distress, which is also found in those who are bullied, we aimed to study the association between orofacial conditions and bullying. A systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42022331693), including articles dealing with bullying and dentofacial traits, was performed following the PRISMA chart. The iterative search of eligible publications was carried out on 27 March 2023 on four databases (PubMed, PubPsych, Web

Once dismissed as an innocuous experience of childhood, bullying is now recognized as having significant psychological effects, particularly with chronic exposure. Victims of bullying are at risk for a number of psychiatric disturbances, and growing evidence suggests that the pathophysiological effects of bullying, as with other forms of trauma and chronic stress, create additional health risks. We review the literature on the known sequelae of bullying, including psychiatric and physiological health effects, with a focus on implications for the victim. In addition, since it is now well establ

The aim of this study was to test a model in which psychopathic traits (callous-unemotional, grandiose-manipulative, and impulsive-irresponsible) and moral disengagement individually and interactively predict two types of bullying (traditional and cyberbullying) in a community sample of adolescents. A total of 765 adolescents (464 girls and 301 boys) completed measures of moral disengagement and psychopathic traits at Time 1, and measures of bullying and cyberbullying at Time 1 and 1 year later, at Time 2. The results showed that callous-unemotional traits predicted both traditional bullying a

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether early manifestations of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) increase children's later risk of bullying or victimization.
METHOD: Using a population-based, prospective cohort, our multi-informant approach comprised reports of parents, teachers, and peers. ADHD and ODD behavioral problems at ages 1.5, 3, and 5 years were determined from parental reports on the Child Behavior Checklist. Later bullying behavior at school was reported by teachers using a questionnaire (n = 3,192, mean age 6.6 years), and by peer/self

BACKGROUND: Being bullied is an aversive experience with short-term and long-term consequences, and is incorporated in biopsychosocial models of psychosis. We used the 2000 and the 2007 British Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Surveys to test the hypothesis that bullying is associated with individual psychotic phenomena and with psychosis, and predicts the later emergence of persecutory ideation and hallucinations.
METHODS: We analysed two nationally representative surveys of individuals aged 16 years or older in Great Britain (2000) and England (2007). Respondents were presented with a card listi

School bullying victimisation is associated with poor mental health and self harm. However, little is known about the lifestyle factors and negative life events associated with victimisation, or the factors associated with self harm among boys who experience bullying. The objectives of the study were to examine the prevalence of bullying in Irish adolescent boys, the association between bullying and a broad range of risk factors among boys, and factors associated with self harm among bullied boys and their non-bullied peers. Analyses were based on the data of the Irish centre of the Child and

Workplace bullying (WPB) is a growing global issue that remains insufficiently recognized and addressed. This study aims to explore the prevalence of workplace bullying among working Saudi Arabian residents, its associated factors, and its relationship with depression. This cross-sectional study included 613 workers from public and private sectors in Saudi Arabia. Sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, medical and psychiatric history, and workplace bullying experiences were assessed. Workplace bullying was measured using both a self-labeling approach and the Negative Acts Questionn

Background/Objectives: Despite progress in recognizing sexual diversity, homophobic bullying persists. This study had four objectives: (1) to identify the prevalence of homophobic bullying (victims, perpetrators, and bystanders); (2) to explore whether differences exist between victims and perpetrators as a function of sexual orientation with respect to emotional factors and psychopathological symptoms; (3) to analyze whether victims and perpetrators of homophobic bullying have sought psychological assistance significantly more often; and (4) to identify predictive variables of victimization a

The link between childhood abuse and the likelihood of experiencing bullying victimization is well-established; yet, empirical research has presented divergent findings on this connection, with the moderating influences remaining obscure. Utilizing a three-tiered meta-analytic framework, this investigation aims to provide a thorough synthesis and quantitative assessment of the relationship between childhood abuse and bullying victimization. The analysis encompassed 35 studies, comprising 84 effect sizes across a participant pool of 72,691 individuals. This study conducted a three-tiered meta-a

Visible skin diseases such as acne, eczema, vitiligo, and keloids exert a disproportionate psychosocial burden on marginalized adolescents, particularly among Indigenous, Latinx, and migrant youth. This review illuminates how the cycle of stigma, bullying (both in-person and online), and discrimination is amplified by intersecting cultural, racial, and socioeconomic factors, leading to elevated rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide risk. However, despite the gravity of these challenges, psychosocial distress remains routinely underdiagnosed and undertreated in these populations,

IMPORTANCE: Homophobic bullying-which is motivated by actual or perceived sexual orientation-is a common experience among youth and is more strongly associated with adverse outcomes than bullying unrelated to bias. Yet current approaches to reducing homophobic bullying either lack empirical evidence or encounter significant obstacles. Thus, the field requires the identification of strategies that hold promise for reducing homophobic bullying.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether litigation is associated with reductions in homophobic bullying.
