In situ seed baiting and DNA metabarcoding support developmental continuity of a Coprinellus association in the predominantly leafless orchid Cremastra aphylla.

Although orchids depend on mycorrhizal fungi for germination, their early-stage fungal partners may be replaced during subsequent development. This possibility is particularly relevant in Calypsoinae, in which many green species shift from juvenile associations with wood-decaying fungi to adult associations with rhizoctonia fungi. To determine whether a comparable shift occurs in the predominantly leafless orchid Cremastra aphylla, we combined in situ seed packet burial with ITS2 metabarcoding in a single population. We investigated fungal associations among small protocorms, large protocorms,

Detecting Seafloor Gas Leakage from Geologic Carbon Storage Sites: A Laboratory-Scale Distributed Acoustic Sensing Evaluation.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical technology for mitigating climate change by reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Effective monitoring of CCS sites is essential to ensure that injected CO2 remains securely trapped and does not leak into the shallow subsurface or atmosphere. Large-scale CCS in the Gulf of Mexico could be facilitated by extensive existing infrastructure and suitable geologic containment; however, legacy wells and structurally complex geology remain critical challenges for ensuring storage integrity. Traditional monitoring methods, while effective, of

An Efficient Propagation System through Root Cuttings of an Ecological and Economic Value Plant-Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) L'Hér. ex Vent.

Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) L'Hér. ex Vent. has considerable economic and ecological value and a long history of use in China. In this paper, root cuttings were used as the material to establish an efficient vegetative propagation of B. papyrifera. The results revealed that root segments with a diameter of 1.5~2.0 cm and a length of 20~30 cm were most suitable for shoot regeneration, as these segments had the highest adventitious shoot induction rates (93.3%), strongest adventitious shoots, and highest multiplication coefficients (7.07). With regard to the methods used for root burial, a hori

Core-Shell Processing of Natural Pigment: Upper Palaeolithic Red Ochre from Lovas, Hungary.

Ochre is the common archaeological term for prehistoric pigments. It is applied to a range of uses, from ritual burials to cave art to medications. While a substantial number of Palaeolithic paint mining pits have been identified across Europe, the link between ochre use and provenance, and their antiquity, has never yet been identified. Here we characterise the mineralogical signature of core-shell processed ochre from the Palaeolithic paint mining pits near Lovas in Hungary, using a novel integration of petrographic and mineralogical techniques. We present the first evidence for core-shell p

Community response to the Ebola outbreak: Contribution of community-based organisations and community leaders in four health districts in Guinea.

The major challenges in controlling the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Guinea were contact tracing, referral of suspected cases, secure burial and mistrust in the context of a weak health system. Community involvement and uptake of key interventions were very low, contributing to the spread of the epidemic. A community engagement project, using community based organisations (CBOs) and community leaders, was implemented in four affected health districts in rural Guinea. This paper reports on the contribution of the CBOs and community leaders in controlling the EVD outbreak. Base-, mid- a

Epidemic Response amidst Insecurity: Addressing the Ebola Virus Epidemic in the Provinces of North Kivu and Ituri.

This paper examines the impact of insecurity on the management of the Ebola virus disease epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo provinces of North Kivu and Ituri. In these provinces, insecurity has been one of the biggest obstacles in the response to the Ebola outbreak. When the epidemic began, these provinces were already insecure-creating unfavorable circumstances for implementing epidemic response activities. While the ninth epidemic in the Equateur province was brought under control in record time, the same was not true for the tenth epidemic in North Kivu and Ituri. Since the e

Ancient DNA Reveals Limited Hunter-Gatherer Ancestry in the Cerny Culture (Middle Neolithic, France) Despite Hunting-Associated Practices.

The arrival of the Neolithic way of life in Europe is associated with the migration of Anatolian farmers and their admixture with local hunter-gatherers. In the Paris Basin (Northern France), the Middle Neolithic Cerny culture (4700-4300 bce) combines agricultural practices with funerary items linked to hunting, suggesting a particular connection with the local descendants of Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. The monumental burials gathering only a handful of deceased indicate the development of an elite. To better understand Cerny social structures, we generated genome-wide data for 28 individuals

Biodegradable Tea Saponin/Xylan/PVA Composite Films with Antibacterial and Antioxidant Properties for Strawberry Preservation.

Conventional non-degradable plastic films used in postharvest packaging cause environmental pollution and offer limited functionality for extending shelf life. The booming Camellia oleifera oil industry generates massive tea shell waste, whose improper disposal is both a resource loss and an opportunity for developing biodegradable active packaging. Here, alkali-extracted xylan (AX) and tea saponin (TS) were blended with PVA to prepare TS/AX/PVA composite films. The optimized films exhibited low moisture content (10.39%), reduced water solubility (0.35%), enhanced UV-blocking and water vapor-b

Impact of Phytoplankton Blooms on Concentrations of Antibiotics in Sediment and Snails in a Subtropical River, China.

The present three-year field investigation on sediment in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China showed that concentrations of sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), and macrolides (MLs) in the river areas where blooms occurred were 4.6, 2.4, and 3.4 times higher than those without blooms, respectively, but the respective concentrations of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in the areas with blooms were 2.6 and 3.8 times lower than those without. Significant positive correlations were found between concentrations of chlorophyll a in water and most antibiotics in sediment. Furth

Integrative Characterization of Tight Sandstone: A Comparison Between the Bohai Bay Basin and Ordos Basin.

Tight sandstone has emerged as a primary focus for global oil-gas resource exploration and for increasing reserves and production. Accurate characterization of the microscopic pore structure of tight sandstone reservoirs is crucial for identifying and classifying high-quality reservoirs. This study examines tight sandstone reservoirs in the Sha-4 member of the Dongying area in the Bohai Bay Basin and the Chang-7 member of the Xin'anbian area in the Ordos Basin, China. Through techniques such as cast thin sections, scanning electron microscopy, and high-pressure mercury injection, this study in

Fan Deltas and Diagenesis Control on the Reservoir Capacity of Tight Sandstone: Shahezi Formation, Lishu Fault Depression, Songliao Basin, China.

High-quality reservoirs are the main places where oil and gas reservoirs are located, and their distribution is crucial for the efficient exploration of tight gas reservoirs. However, the formation of reservoirs is affected by a number of elements, including depositional conditions and diagenesis, making it challenging to identify high-quality reservoirs in the formation. In this paper, our aim is to establish a development model of sandstone reservoirs in the fan delta depositional system by analyzing the control of depositional facies and diagenesis on reservoir quality. The research methods

Effectiveness and use of avalanche airbags in mortality reduction among winter-recreationists.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The number of backcountry skiers and snowboarder surged in the last years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as ski resorts shut down. Inevitably, this led to an increase in avalanche-related injuries and death. As avalanche rescue device, avalanche airbags are increasingly becoming part of the standard winter mountaineering equipment. This study provides a review of the available data and an updated perspective on avalanche airbags, discussing their function and efficacy to reduce mortality and their limitations. RESULTS: Causes of death in individuals caught by

Taphonomy of marine vertebrates of the Pisco Formation (Miocene, Peru): Insights into the origin of an outstanding Fossil-Lagerstätte.

The Miocene Pisco Formation, broadly exposed in the Ica Desert of southern Peru, is among the most outstanding Cenozoic marine Fossil-Lagerstätten worldwide. It is renowned for its exceptional preservation and abundance of vertebrate fossils, including a rich assemblage of whales and dolphins (Cetacea). Here, we integrate taphonomic data on 890 marine vertebrate fossils, gathered through 16 different localities. Our observations range from the taxonomic distribution, articulation, completeness, disposition and orientation of skeletons, to the presence of bite marks, associations with shark tee

Effects of Climate Change on Avalanche Accidents and Survival.

Avalanches are major natural hazards in snow-covered mountains, threatening people and infrastructure. With ongoing climate change, the frequency and types of snow avalanches may change, affecting the rates of avalanche burial and survival. With a wetter and warmer snow climate, consequences of burial may become more severe. In this review, we assess the potential effects of climate change on the frequency and characteristics of avalanches. We then discuss how these changes might affect the survival rates of subjects buried by avalanches and might influence the responses of search and rescue (

Natural or intended mummification? Specific case of a child mummy.

The aim of this work was to document and analyze an exceptionally preserved mummified body of a six-year-old boy found in a family tomb in Skalná, Czech Republic. The boy died of scarlet fever in 1887, and was buried under ground in a cemetery in an unknown coffin shortly after death. His parents exhumed his cadaver and entombed it in the family crypt in two tin coffins a year later. This secondary burial and violent opening of the coffins in the end of the World War II leaving the body exposed to external climatic conditions led to its natural (spontaneous) dry mummification. The computed tom

Mites (Acari) as a Relevant Tool in Trace Evidence and Postmortem Analyses of Buried Corpses.

This report interprets the presence of mite species in three clandestine graves in Europe, evaluating their potential use as trace evidence or markers. Grave 1 (Sweden): Two mite species Rhizoglyphus robini Claparède, 1869 and Parasitus loricatus (Wankel, 1861) were recovered from the surface of a body buried in a shallow grave in an area surrounded by trees, in close vicinity to house gardens. Grave 2 (Germany): Phoretic deutonymphs of Gamasodes spiniger (Trägårdh, 1910) were attached to an adult fly (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae) found within a shallow grave containing two human bodies covered in

Paleopathology and Nutritional Analysis of a South German Monastery Population.

The monastery of Attel, Upper Bavaria, which was founded in AD 1030, harbours a series of crypt burials from the time period between AD 1700 and 1750. Due to a restoration of the church, 16 crypts had to be removed and were subjected to an extensive anthropological-paleopathological and isotope analysis. The 16 crypts contained 19 burials in open wooden coffins. All bodies were covered by an extensive layer of calcium carbonate. Despite this "treatment," bone and teeth were excellently preserved (mean degree of conservation > 75%, completeness > 85%). The anthropological investigation revealed
