Environmental zinc and cadmium pollution associated with generalized osteochondrosis, osteoporosis, and nephrocalcinosis in horses.

Several suspect causes of chronic zinc/cadmium toxicosis in horses near a zinc smelter were investigated following observations of lameness, swollen joints, and unthriftiness, particularly in foals. Two foals born and raised near the smelter were lame and had joint swellings that were attributable to severe generalized osteochondrosis. Zinc and cadmium concentrations were markedly increased in the pancreas, liver, and kidney. The serum of 1 foal, zinc and potassium concentrations were high, whereas calcium and magnesium concentrations were low. Marked nephrocalcinosis and osteoporosis were obs

Cadmium-induced osteomalacia.

The detailed study of a battery plate maker, who had worked with cadmium for 36 years, showed that proteinuria, typical of renal tubular dysfunction, had been observed for 25 years and during the last 12 years of his life the patient had suffered increasing disability from gross bone disease. Several bone biopsies and detailed metabolic studies showed typical severe osteomalacia, which responded well initially to calcium and vitamin D treatment. Examination of the liver both in life and after death showed a gross excess of cadmium. This was also found in the kidneys after death. Previously unr

[Metals and their compounds as contaminants in food : Arsenic, cadmium, lead and aluminum].

Metals and their compounds are ubiquitously distributed in the environment, thus reaching plant and animal derived food. While actual exposure levels in Europe do not give rise to concern for acute toxicity, chronic toxicity of some metals and metalloids cannot be completely ruled out. Thus, in the case of inorganic arsenic, an elevated risk of carcinogenicity in different organs cannot be excluded even under actual dietary exposure conditions. In the case of cadmium, nephrotoxicity may be a particular problem for certain subgroups, such as children. Regarding lead, exposure levels have droppe

Biological Effects of Human Exposure to Environmental Cadmium.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal for the human organism and for all ecosystems. Cd is naturally found at low levels; however, higher amounts of Cd in the environment result from human activities as it spreads into the air and water in the form of micropollutants as a consequence of industrial processes, pollution, waste incineration, and electronic waste recycling. The human body has a limited ability to respond to Cd exposure since the metal does not undergo metabolic degradation into less toxic species and is only poorly excreted. The extremely long biological half-life of Cd essentially makes

Recent results of health examinations on the general population in cadmium-polluted and control areas in Japan.

Health examinations by a revised method aimed at detecting renal tubular dysfunctions more effectively were conducted on the general population aged 50 years and over in cadmium-polluted areas (1826 persons) and control areas (1611 persons) in four prefectures in Japan in 1976. Although detailed analysis of the data is not yet completed, some of the results obtained are described here. The prevalence of glucosuria and low molecular weight proteinuria, frequency of decreased % TRP, and cadmium concentrations in urine are higher in the cadmium-polluted areas than in the controls. Clinically diag

Heavy Metal Residues in Raw Cow Milk Collected from Three Major Cities of Odisha, India.

Environmental pollution, particularly that caused by heavy metals, is a significant global concern in the current period of globalisation and possess a substantial risk to human and animal health through food chain. There have also been reports of heavy metal contamination of cattle and buffalo milk from various parts of India, including Tamilnadu, the Mumbai suburbs, and Northern Gujarat. However, no research has been done to determine whether cow milk from the study area in the state of Odisha contains heavy metal residues. Residue of heavy metals (arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury and cobalt)

Chelators as antidotes of metal toxicity: therapeutic and experimental aspects.

The effects of chelating drugs used clinically as antidotes to metal toxicity are reviewed. Human exposure to a number of metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, manganese, aluminum, iron, copper, thallium, arsenic, chromium, nickel and platinum may lead to toxic effects, which are different for each metal. Similarly the pharmacokinetic data, clinical use and adverse effects of most of the chelating drugs used in human metal poisoning are also different for each chelating drug. The chelating drugs with worldwide application are dimercaprol (BAL), succimer (meso-DMSA), unithiol (DMPS), D-penicil

The proteinuria of industrial lead intoxication.

Studies of protein excretion were undertaken in seven males, aged 35-42 years, who had more than 5 years exposure to industrial lead and had clinically established Pb intoxication. Heavy metal intoxication with Cd and Hg causes proximal tubular abnormalities, i.e., aminoaciduria, glycosuria, phosphaturia. Similar abnormalities occur in Pb intoxication except that the nature of the proteinuria remains controversial. Studies of urinary proteins included 24-hr urine protein excretion, dextran gel separations, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and beta 2 microgl

[Effects of cadmium on testis function].

The deterioration of male fertility, reported in numerous epidemiological studies over past decades, can be connected with growing exposure to environmental toxins. Heavy metals, especially cadmium, is widely spread and extremely toxic. The mechanisms of cadmium toxic effects vary and involve the damage of vascular endothelium, intracellular junctions, germ cells, Leydig and Sertoli cells. Cadmium can increase activity of reactive oxygen species and induce changes in activity of enzymatic systems and inflammatory reactions. The morphological changes caused by cadmium included the necrosis of s

Occupational cadmium exposure and testicular endocrine function.

Cadmium is known to cause testicular necrosis in several animal species, although there is little data on its possible effects in humans. We have investigated the effect of occupational cadmium exposure on the pituitary-testicular endocrine axis, as measured by serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicular-stimulating hormone (FSH), in a well-characterized population occupationally exposed to cadmium. Over 60% of all workers, who had been exposed to cadmium oxide fumes for longer than a year, in a single factory, since 1926, were studied. Integrated cadmium exposure estimates wer

Assessing the Effects of Dietary Cadmium Exposure on the Gastrointestinal Tract of Beef Cattle via Microbiota and Transcriptome Profile.

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental pollutant, widely existing in soil, and can be absorbed and accumulated by plants. Hunan Province exhibits the worst cadmium contamination of farmland in China. Ruminants possess an abundant microbial population in the rumen, which enables them to tolerate various poisonous plants. To investigate whether the rumen microbiota could respond to Cd and mitigate the toxicity of Cd-accumulated maize to ruminants, 6-month-old cattle were fed with 85.82% (fresh basis) normal whole-plant maize silage diet (CON, n = 10) or Cd-accumulated whole-plant maize silage diet (CA

A hydrogen sulfide application can alleviate the toxic effects of cadmium on ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe).

Cadmium (Cd) is a poisonous element for human health. This study was conducted to explore whether H2S can alleviate the toxic effects of Cd on ginger. Specifically, ginger plants were grown in soil and treated with 7.5 mg·l-1 CdCl2, after which water (T1), 0.8 mM NaHS (T2), or 0.8 mM NaHS and 0.15 mM HT (T3) were added to the soil. The application of NaHS increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (APX, GR, MDHAR, and DHAR) during the early treatment stage. It also inhibited the decrease in Pn, Gs, and Ls under Cd stress conditions while also limiting the increase in Ci. An analysis of th

Cadmium affects the glutathione/glutaredoxin system in germinating pea seeds.

The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of cadmium (Cd) on thiol and especially glutathione (GSH)-dependent reactions (glutathione content, glutaredoxin (Grx) content and activity, "glutathione" peroxidase (Gpx) activity, and glutathione reductase (GR) activity) in germinating pea seeds. Under Cd stress conditions, the overall activity as well as more specifically the expression of Grx C4 and Grx S12 increased. On the contrary, when incubated with Cd ions in vitro, the disulfide reductase activity of both isoforms was drastically inhibited. In the case of Grx C4, this correlated wi

S100β in heavy metal-related child attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in an informal e-waste recycling area.

Exposure to lead even at low levels correlates with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, lead-contaminated environments are often contaminated with other heavy metals that could exacerbate lead-induced ADHD. We conducted this study to evaluate the relationship between multiple heavy metals and child behaviors, and the involvement of S100 calcium-binding protein β (S100β) expression in child ADHD in Guiyu, an internationally-known e-waste contaminated recycling town. Two hundred and forty kindergarten children, 3- to 7-years of age, who lived in Guiyu, were recruited for th

Protective effects of N-acetylcysteine and its amide derivative against toxic metals in vitro: Potential alternatives/adjuncts to traditional chelators.

The protective efficacies of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA) against the toxicity of compounds containing arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium and mercury, were compared to those of dimercaprol, dimercaptosuccinic acid, 2,3-dimercaptopropanesulphonate, D-penicillamine, and derivatives of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic in CHO-K1 cells. Both NAC and NACA were found to confer protection against these metals, with comparable or better efficacy than many of the test chelators. Results from studies using the glutathione synthesis inhibitor b

Comparative effects of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, monensin and salinomycin on the concentrations of cadmium and some essential elements in skeletal muscles of Cd-exposed mice.

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental pollutant shown to induce multi organ dysfunction. In this study we present novel data about the effects of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), monensin and salinomycin on the concentration of Cd in skeletal muscles of mice exposed to Cd (II) acetate treatment for 14 days. The impact of Cd and the chelating agents on the endogenous concentrations of calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), phosphorous (P), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) was also investigated. Subacute exposure of mice to Cd (II) acetate resulted in a significant accumulation of t

Toxic compounds in honey.

There is a wealth of information about the nutritional and medicinal properties of honey. However, honey may contain compounds that may lead to toxicity. A compound not naturally present in honey, named 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), may be formed during the heating or preservation processes of honey. HMF has gained much interest, as it is commonly detected in honey samples, especially samples that have been stored for a long time. HMF is a compound that may be mutagenic, carcinogenic and cytotoxic. It has also been reported that honey can be contaminated with heavy metals such as lead, arseni

Aspects on tubular proteinuria.

Tubular proteinuria, or low molecular weight (LMW) proteinuria, is less common than glomerular proteinuria, but is often of clinical significance. Both qualitative analysis of the urinary protein pattern by electrophoresis and quantitative estimations of various LMW-proteins are now usually available in the clinical routine laboratories. It is thus possible to look for LMW-proteinuria, as a sign of damage to the function of proximal renal tubules. For this purpose beta 2-microglobulin may be used as marker protein. Chronic cadmium poisoning and the Balkan nephropathy are examples of conditions

Increase of lifetime cadmium intake dose-dependently increased all cause of mortality in female inhabitants of the cadmium-polluted Jinzu River basin, Toyama, Japan.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to cadmium (Cd) via food is supposed to affect life prognosis of inhabitants of Cd-polluted area in Japan. However, there have been few reports demonstrating a significant relationship between the amount of Cd intake and mortality. We aimed to investigate the relationship between mortality and individual lifetime Cd intake (LCd) in inhabitants of the polluted Jinzu River basin, Toyama, Japan. METHODS: We conducted a 26-year follow-up survey in 2407 inhabitants (1208 men and 1199 women) who participated in health examinations for screening of renal dysfunction from 1979 to
