OBJECTIVE: To report and evaluate the results of subtalar distraction bone block fusion in the treatment of malunited calcaneus fracture.
METHODS: From September 2004 to January 2008, 32 cases of malunited calcaneus fracture were treated, among which 28 cases were classified type II and 4 cases type III by Stephens-Sander's classification. Preoperative X-ray and CT examination demonstrated a talocalcaneal angle of 18.1 degrees ± 2.3 degrees , and an AOFAS score of 36.3 ± 4.1. Subtalar distraction bone block fusion was performed in all cases in this series. Regular follow-up was done with talo

Duplication of the calcaneus is a rarely observed radiographic finding that probably results from delayed coalescence of two primary calcaneal centers of ossification. We performed a review of 2,500 computerized cases of skeletal dysplasias and syndromes with bone involvement in the International Skeletal Dysplasia Registry, searching for those cases in which a duplicate calcaneus had been recorded. We found that it was a non-random feature of three skeletal dysplasias and groups comprising thanatophoric dysplasia and the chondrodysplasia punctata and short rib (polydactyly) groups. We conclud

Between 1980 and 1991 we treated 150 joint fractures of the os calcis with open reduction and internal fixation with a special AO-plate. In this report we show the results of 36 fractures in 33 patients after an average follow-up of 89 months (43-132). Patients got back their working ability between 4.6 and 5.6 months. At the time of the clinical control two third of the patients had a working ability of 100%. 4 patients changed their profession due to the poor result of the fracture. 12% of the cases ended in spontaneous or secondary arthrodesis of the lower ankle joint. One third of the pati

The risk of a supination trauma is particularly high in patients with pathological calcaneus varus as opposed to physiological calcaneus valgus. If in these patients only the lateral ligaments are operatively treated after a trauma, there is a high incidence of recurrence, as the abnormal position of the calcaneus means that the supinating forces acting laterally have a stronger effect than in normal cases. We therefore suggest a combination of fibulotalar syndesmoplasty with osteotomy of the calcaneus according to Dwyer in such cases. In the last 7 years we have carried out this operation eig

PURPOSE: This systematic review investigates how percutaneous screw osteosynthesis for the treatment of intra-articular displaced calcaneus fractures differs from open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). METHODS: Randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials investigating adults with closed intra-articular displaced calcaneus fracture (Sanders type II - IV) treated with percutaneous screw osteosynthesis or ORIF were included. Severe vascular and neurological diseases or polytrauma patients were excluded. On January 29, 2024, five databases and two trial registries were search

Surgical fixation techniques for bone fracture healing are well established and effective; however, opportunities remain to improve both functional outcomes and the patient experience. The Biofiligree® concept integrates medicine, engineering, and design by reimagining conventional osteosynthesis plates as both therapeutic and aesthetic devices. Inspired by traditional Portuguese filigree, these plates allow patient participation through personalized geometries, patterns, or engravings and may later be transformed into wearable jewellery after removal, preserving them as symbolic artefacts of

Running is a popular form of physical activity with significant health benefits, but improper technique can lead to running-related injuries. This study investigates the influence of running speed, incline, and fatigue on calcaneus eversion/inversion angle at heel strike, maximum eversion angle, and range of motion, factors associated with lower limb injuries. Fifteen injury-free female runners participated in this study. Kinematic data were collected using a 3D motion capture system with reflective markers placed directly on the skin through specially modified running shoes. The runners perfo

Posterior tibial tendon disfunction is one of the most commonly treated foot and ankle entities. Surgical treatment may consist of various components and is often performed on an a-la-carte basis. Commonly, joint preservative surgery for posterior tibial tendon dysfunction invariably involves one or more osteotomies of the calcaneus. This article evaluates the current existing evidence guiding providers in the selection of single or double calcaneal osteotomies.

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneus is one of the most commonly fractured tarsal bones. The use of computed tomography (CT) has enabled more accurate fracture configuration and classification of fractures. The outcomes of operative versus nonoperative treatment of these fractures have been extensively debated with variable results. Significant complications following intra-articular fractures have been reported in the literature despite management by experienced surgeons. This article will discuss the treatment of calcaneus fractures by open reduction and internal fixation in a prone position with a calca

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Giant cell tumors (GCT) of the feet bones are rare, comprising of <1 % of cases. The lack of well-documented cases and similarity with other tumors under radiologic and histological evaluation makes diagnosis difficult. Current treatment modalities for GCT still result in a relatively high recurrence rate, making the overall management of the case a challenge. We reported a 27-year-old male diagnosed with GCT of the left calcaneus with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) treated with curettage and femoral head allograft combined with bone cement application.

OBJECTIVE: A distinctive feature of the modern human foot is the presence of a medial longitudinal arch when weight-bearing. Although the talus and calcaneus play a major role in the structure and function of the human foot, the association between the morphology of these bones and longitudinal arch height has not been fully investigated. A better understanding of this relationship may assist in the interpretation of pedal remains of fossil hominins, where features of the foot and ankle morphology have been described as providing evidence for the presence of a longitudinal arch.

BACKGROUND: Radiographic imaging of the foot is commonly performed when medical evaluation is indicated. Angular measurements between bones may be assessed as part of the examination for trauma and foot biomechanics. However, angular relationships between surfaces of the physical bone as they compare with the bone's radiographic image has had limited investigation.
METHODS: For this study, 54 human feet from amputated limbs were imaged in standard radiographic views and skeletonized. Selected angular measurements were taken on each skeletonized talus and calcaneus and were compared with those

Minor injuries of the anterior process of the calcaneus occur frequently and most heal uneventfully. The present series reports on 6 patients with persistent complaints after anterior process avulsion fractures. The avulsed fragments of the anterior process at the calcaneocuboid joint were surgically excised in all, which resolved the complaints completely in 4 patients and reduced the complaints significantly in 2. If conservative measures fail and the complaints are refractory, debridement of the anterior process avulsion fractures at the calcaneocuboid joint could be a viable option.

OBJECTIVE: The mini-invasive technique, through a sinus tarsi approach (STA), has become an increasingly popular choice for the treatment of calcaneal fractures. However, despite the good results reported, the complications related with internal fixation have not yet been analyzed. Using 3D reconstruction CT scans, we proposed doing biometric description of the calcaneus with the purpose of performing osteosynthesis as treatment for calcaneal fractures.
METHODS: A total of 24 CT scans were retrospectively obtained from 22 consecutive patients with healthy calcanei and no history of surgery or

BACKGROUND: Extensile open approaches to reduce and fix intra-articular calcaneal fractures are associated with high levels of wound complications. To avoid these complications, a technique of percutaneous reduction and fixation with screws alone was developed. This study assessed the clinical outcomes, radiographs, and postoperative CT scans after operative treatment with this technique.
METHODS: 153 consecutive patients with 182 intra-articular calcaneal fractures were reviewed. All patients were assessed for early postoperative complications at 3 months from the injury. The clinical result

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous ipsilateral fractures of the calcaneus and fibula are the result of high-energy injuries. Open surgical treatment of both fractures can be performed with incisions based on the described blood supply of the lower extremity.
METHODS: A retrospective review for all patients with ipsilateral fractures of the calcaneus and fibula was performed over an eight-year period. Thirty-eight patients were identified. Eleven patients (28.9%) were treated with open reduction and internal fixation through two separate incisions. Average follow-up was 48.8 weeks.
