Fluoride-Free Diet Stimulates Pineal Growth in Aged Male Rats.

The pineal gland is a naturally calcifying endocrine organ which secretes the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin. Age-related changes of the pineal have been observed, including decreased pinealocyte numbers, increased calcification, and a reduction in melatonin production. Since fluoride is attracted to calcium within the pineal gland, this study sought to examine the effects of a fluoride-free diet on the morphology of the pineal gland of aged male rats (26 months old). All animals had previously been raised on standard fluoridated food and drinking water. These control animals were compared

Fluoride inhibition of the hydro-osmotic response of the toad urinary bladder to antidiuretic hormone.

The hydro-osmotic response of the toad bladder to antidiuretic hormone and cyclic AMP was inhibited by the methoxyflurane metabolite, fluoride. The osmotic transfer of water in the absence of hormone was unaffected by fluoride as was the hydroosmotic response due to hypertonicity of the serosal bathing media. Osmotic water movements across N-ethylmaleimide-"fixed" vasopressin or cyclic AMP-stimulated bladders were likewise unchanged by fluoride, suggesting that fluoride is exerting an action subsequent to the endogenous formation of cyclic AMP but before the final effector mechanism. Fluoride

Non-Invasive Strategies for Remineralization and Hypersensitivity Management in Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is an enamel defect affecting molars and incisors, often leading to hypersensitivity, enamel breakdown, and increased caries risk. Non-invasive treatments, such as casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and fluoride varnish, show potential in remineralizing affected enamel and reducing sensitivity, but their efficacy is still debated. This study systematically reviews and analyzes the effectiveness of CPP-ACP and other non-invasive agents in improving remineralization and reducing hypersensitivity in MIH-affected teeth. Me

Protective effect of topically applied fluoride in relation to fluoride sensitivity of mutans streptococci.

The aim of the present in vitro experiments was to determine whether the protection of enamel by topically applied fluoride against demineralization by bacterial acids would depend on the fluoride sensitivity of the bacteria. Glucose-agarose gel suspensions of fluoride-sensitive and fluoride-resistant mutans streptococci were placed on bovine enamel specimens with different amounts of fluoride. One group of specimens was untreated, a second group had been pretreated with a F-lacquer, and a third group had been pretreated with the F-lacquer and rinsed subsequently with a KOH-solution, to remove

Histomorphometric analysis of iliac crest bone biopsies in placebo-treated versus fluoride-treated subjects.

In a 4-year controlled, prospective trial, histomorphometric analysis was used to compare the tissue-level skeletal effects of fluoride therapy in 43 postmenopausal women (75 mg NaF/day) with those of 35 matching placebo subjects; all subjects received 1500 mg/day elemental calcium supplement. In addition to an initial, baseline biopsy, a second biopsy was obtained after 6, 18, 30 or 48 months. Measurements were made on a third biopsy obtained from 8 subjects following at least 72 months of fluoride therapy. The change in cancellous bone volume or trabecular thickness in fluoride-treated subje

Evaluating the effects of remineralizing agents on initial carious lesions.

BACKGROUND: Initial carious lesions are reversible, and fluoride-containing reagents effectively promote enamel remineralization in these initial lesions. Numerous remineralizing agents are available, some containing fluoride and others containing alternatives because of fluoride toxicity concerns. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the following remineralizing agents: fluoride varnish (5% NaF, Duraphat®), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate paste (CPP-ACP, Tooth Mousse®), and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride paste (CPP-ACPF, T

Defluoridation of drinking water by boiling with brushite and calcite.

Existing methods for defluoridating drinking water involve expensive high technology or are slow, inefficient and/or unhygienic. A new method is now suggested, encompassing brushite and calcite suspension followed by boiling. Our aim was to examine the efficiency of the method and the chemical reactions involved. Brushite, 0.3-0.5 g, and an equal weight of calcite were suspended in 1 litre water containing 5-20 ppm fluoride. The suspensions were boiled in an electric kettle, left to cool and the calcium salts to sediment. Solution ion concentrations were determined and sediments were examined

[Calcium and phosphate metabolism in hemofiltration (author's transl)].

In 10 patients undergoing hemofiltration treatment acute changes of parameters in the calcium-phosphate metaboism were investigated. Balance studies were also performed in all patients. Control studies were conducted after a 3-month interval in 7 patients. Whereas ionized calcium and 25-HCC remained constant, there was a significant decrease in phosphate, magnesium, fluoride and parathyroid hormone. Corresponding to these results, negative balances could be seen during the course of a hemofiltration treatment: for phosphate a mean value of -593 mg, for magnesium -8.4 mEq and for fluoride -458

[Indications and limitations of non-hormonal treatments of osteoporosis].

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a multifactorial disease stemming from the accumulation of several risk factors, among which estrogen deficiency plays a key role. Although the only currently available preventive treatment is replacement estrogen and progesterone therapy, there is evidence suggesting that calcium influences cortical bone loss. In contrast, calcium alone has no effect on trabecular bone loss. Calcitonin, biphosphonates and fluoride salts are not indicated for primary prevention, in patients with no fractures. Ongoing studies are evaluating the efficacy of intranasal calcitonin an

Method for the analysis of total fluoride in fluoride-releasing dental varnishes.

Today's fluoride-releasing varnishes (F-varnish) contain a wide variety of ingredients which present analytical challenges for measuring their total fluoride content. This study reports improved methods to measure fluoride content in F-varnishes. Six different commercially available F-varnishes that contain difluorosilane (0.1% F) or NaF (2.26% F) alone or in combination with calcium-phosphates were analyzed. In a vial, 1-3 drops (0.05-0.15 g) of varnish product was dispensed, dissolved in chloroform, equilibrated in TISAB and analyzed via fluoride ion-selective electrode. The average weight p

New approaches to enhanced remineralization of tooth enamel.

Dental caries is a highly prevalent diet-related disease and is a major public health problem. A goal of modern dentistry is to manage non-cavitated caries lesions non-invasively through remineralization in an attempt to prevent disease progression and improve aesthetics, strength, and function. Remineralization is defined as the process whereby calcium and phosphate ions are supplied from a source external to the tooth to promote ion deposition into crystal voids in demineralized enamel, to produce net mineral gain. Recently, a range of novel calcium-phosphate-based remineralization delivery

Effect of fluoride on endocrine tissues and their secretory functions -- review.

The effects of fluoride on endocrine tissues has not been sufficiently explored to date. The current body of knowledge suggest significant effects of that mineral on reducing sex hormone levels, which may consequently impair fertility and disrupt puberty. The majority of studies confirm that sodium fluoride increases TSH levels and decreases the concentrations of T3 and T4 produced by the thyroid. Moreover, a correlation was observed between NaF and increased secretion of PTH by the parathyroid glands, without a significant impact on body calcium levels. Probably, fluoride may exert adverse ef
