Toad flies in the genus Lucilia (previously referred to as Bufolucilia spp.) parasitize and cause myiasis in several amphibian species in North America. From 2019 to 2022, we documented Lucilia bufonivora infections in post-metamorphic western toads (Anaxyrus boreas) during amphibian surveys in four wetlands in Glacier National Park, Montana, US. We found nine infected adult toads in 2019, seven infected adults in 2020, one infected juvenile in 2021, and five infected adults plus one infected juvenile in 2022. We also captured Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) during these same survey

Two cases of traumatic myiasis, one in Bowen carcinoma and one in chronic leg ulcer, are described. The maggots isolated were reared to the adult stage; they proved to be Calliphoridae of the genus Lucilia (presumably L. sericata). The various forms of myiasis and the species involved in such parasitism are described, and the therapeutic efficiency of proteolytic enzymes and the necrolytic potency of maggots are briefly discussed.

Seven fresh animal carcasses were monitored throughout decomposition in a mixed flatwood forest in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA from 1 April to 1 July 1999. Succession patterns of necrophilous insects were documented for the following: one Louisiana black bear (threatened species), two white-tailed deer, two alligators, and two swine as the experimental reference. Our results suggest variation in the species composition of necrophilous insects among animal carcass types. A total of 93 arthropod species, from 46 families and three classes, were manually collected from the seven carcasses. Only 1

For medico-legal purposes, usually as an aid in establishing the time of death, it is considered essential for forensic pathologists to have detailed entomological knowledge regarding the recognition and classification of several types of flies and their maggots, including the families of Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Sarcophagidae. We try to deal with the description of external and internal morphology of cyclorrhaphous maggots, the biology and lifecycles of blowflies, houseflies and fleshflies.

The New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, represents a major threat to livestock production in several regions of the Americas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three trap types for C. hominivorax surveillance. The study was conducted in Uruguay (32° S), in area with a known natural presence of C. hominivorax. NZI, NZI-M (a modified version designed to optimize capture efficiency), and vertical sticky traps (VST) were used, all baited with baited with Swormlure-4 (SL-4). A Latin square design was applied, testing each trap at four sampling sites (for

Blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) present a wide range of larval lifestyles, typically classified as obligate parasitism, facultative parasitism, and complete sapro-necrophagy. Several parasitic species, both obligate and facultative, are considered to be of sanitary and economic importance, as their larvae can cause myiasis (maggot infestation in live tissue). However, it is noteworthy that the adult female plays a decisive role as she chooses the oviposition site, and, therefore, largely determines the feeding habit and developmental conditions of the larvae. In this study, two protocols ar

Myiasis is a skin infection caused by developing larvae (maggots) of various Diptera fly species. The two most frequent flies that cause human infestations around the world are Dermatobia hominis (human botfly) and Cordylobia anthropophaga (tumbu fly). Maggots have been found to infest the nose, ear, orbit, tracheostomy wound, face, gums, and serous cavities, among other places. Maggots at the colostomy site are an uncommon occurrence. We report a case of maggots infestation surrounding the colostomy site. We came across a rather rare finding in a patient with advanced inoperable rectum cancer

This case involves an orphan female neonate-abandoned in a dustbin in Poona, India-who was infected by the larval forms of the blowfly. The blowfly causing this infestation belonged to the family Calliphoridae and genus Calliphora. The fly of this genus is of importance in Indian veterinary science and is found abundantly around decaying matter in Poona. The larvae occurring in carrion, flesh, etc, usually infest open wounds of animals and rarely infest humans.

Myiasis is the invasion of body tissues of humans or animals by the larvae of the Diptera or two-winged flies. The various forms of myiasis may be classified from clinical or entomological point. This study describes the existence of Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae) cases as a causative agent of myiasis in 18 and 87 year-old men in two different regions in Fars Province. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of mentioned species in this province.

Myiasis in anurans is usually caused by diptera from the Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Chloropidae, and Muscidae families. In this study, one case of cloacal myiasis and one of oral myiasis were registered in Aplastodiscus arildae, caused by Notochaeta bufonivora in Teresópolis, RJ, Brazil. With this report, a new host is listed for N. bufonivora, the first case of tree-frog myiasis caused by sarcophagid flies and the first occurrence of hylid myiasis in the Neotropical area.

Several species of the worldwide distributed genus Calliphora Robineau-Desvoidy (Insecta, Diptera, Calliphoridae) are medically important vectors and agents of myiasis. Furthermore, these flies are relevant in forensics because they are found in corpses. Information regarding the taxonomy, bionomics and distribution of Calliphora species endemic to South America, including Calliphora lopesi Mello, is scarce. To expand knowledge on C. lopesi, this study presents descriptions of eggs, larvae, puparia and developmental data at 14, 17, 20, 23 and 26 ± 1°C for the first time. Adult flies were colle

Myiasis is an infestation of tissue with the larval stage of dipterous flies. This condition mostly affects the skin but may also occur in certain body cavities. It can occur in either animals or humans and is caused by parasitic dipterous fly larvae feeding on the host's necrotic or living tissue. This disease rarely effects birds especially owls. In this study, infestation of an owl with cutaneous myiasis is reported. In October 2008, a wounded owl was referred by the environmental department of Chaharmahal-Bakhtiary province to the clinic of veterinary science at Shahrekord University in we

The primary screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is one of the most important insect pests of livestock in neotropical regions, whereas Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the secondary screwworm, is of medical and sanitary importance because of its role in the dissemination of pathogens. These two species share morphological similarities and both may occur in the same myiasis, but in different developmental stages. In this work, the usefulness of PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism) of mit

Myiasis, the infestation of living vertebrate tissue by dipteran larvae, is commonly reported in humans and domestic animals but rarely documented in wild reptiles. Information on its occurrence in the endangered Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis Ouwens, 1912) is lacking, despite the species' conservation importance. In April 2025, during routine population monitoring in Komodo National Park, an adult male Komodo dragon was captured with a shoulder wound infested by fly larvae. The animal was in good physical condition, and the wound was cleaned and treated before release. A subset of larvae

Myiasis is a real welfare problem. As a disease, it affects man and animals. In a study of myiasis producing flies in Al Marg District, sixteen species of dipterous flies were trapped. The predominant species was Musca domestica followed by Lueilia sericata and the least abundance was Wohlfahrtia magnifica. The overall abundance was in Summer followed by Spring and the least was in Winter. The most attractive bait was liver for members of family Calliphoridae and meat for members of family Muscidae and Family Sarcophagidae.

A case of myiasis due to Cardylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the 'Tumbu fly', is reported for the first time in Sri Lanka, in a 10 month old infant. The infection was acquired in Zimbabwe. The child had appeared 'unwell' for nearly a week before the detection of the skin lesions. The main clinical features were irritability, restlessness and the appearance of three small lumps on the scalp behind the right ear. Identification of the fly larva and the management of myiasis are discussed.

Cordylobia sp. is a fly belonging to the Calliphoridae family. Three species of Cordylobia are known: C. anthropophaga, C. rodhaini and C. ruandae. The C. rodhaini Gedoelst 1909 lives in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rain forest areas. Usual hosts are rodents and antelopes. Humans are accidentally infested. Myiasis caused by C. rodhaini has been very rarely reported in the literature. We present three cases of C. rodhaini myiasis acquired in Ethiopia and Uganda.

The screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a significant pest in Brazil, posing threats to agriculture and public health. Laboratory rearing is crucial for developing control strategies like the sterile insect technique (SIT); but the effects of multi-generational rearing on the fly's biological parameters are not fully understood. This study investigated the impact of rearing C. hominivorax for 12 inbred generations on its morphometrics, reproductive capacity, and life expectancy. Specimens were collected at distinct developmental stages across 12 generations for morphometric analysis, an

Myiasis is the infestation of humans and other warm-blooded animals with dipterous larvae. In the current study, a total of 40 maggots were collected from the cutaneous lesions of the Chinese Milu (Elaphurus davidianus) in China. Based on morphological identification, the third-instar larvae were classified as Chrysomya bezziana. To accurately identify this species, genomic DNA from the larvae was analyzed using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The findings indicated that the examined larvae were unequivocally consistent with the Old World screwworm fly, C. bezziana

Cochliomyia hominivorax, from the family Calliphoridae, is responsible for causing most myiases in domesticated animals in Brazil. As alternatives to conventional treatments, essential oils (EOs) could possibly be used as natural control of ectoparasites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of EOs from Salvia sclarea L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Lavandula hybrida Reverchon, Citrus bergamia Risso, Citrus paradisi L., Juniperus virginiana L., Copaifera reticulata Ducke, Illicium verum Hook f., Pelargonium roseum, Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt, Cymbopogon flexuosus Steud
