Successful Hysteroscopic Removal of a Retained Karman Cannula Tip: A Case Report.

The most frequently performed procedure for first-trimester abortions is suction evacuation due to its excellent safety profile. Complications of suction evacuation include bleeding, infections, sepsis, retained products, and, very rarely, retention of the broken tip of the Karman cannula. The literature on the retention of a broken Karman cannula tip is very scarce. We present a case of a retained Karman cannula tip during suction evacuation for a medical termination of pregnancy in a 37-year-old woman with G2P1L1 and a previous cesarean section at 12 weeks of gestation. Ultrasonography (USG)

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy in seven cats with respiratory failure.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: This case series describes seven cats that were treated with high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy (HFNOT). Seven cats were prospectively (n = 5) or retrospectively (n = 2) included from three veterinary university referral centers between March 2020 and September 2023. Data on signalment, medical history, clinical and diagnostic findings, treatment administered, response to HFNOT and outcomes were recorded. All cats included in this case series failed to respond to oxygen cage or flow-by oxygen therapy and were subsequently transitioned to HFNOT. After this transition, t

A Survey of Feeding Practices During High-Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy.

BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy is used to deliver warm and humidified gases to patients in respiratory failure. A purported advantage of HFNC oxygen therapy is that it can allow for oral feeding while on the device, although few data support this practice. The purpose of this study was to identify practices and opinions with regard to feeding practices during HFNC oxygen therapy. METHODS: A survey related to the practice and opinions of feeding practices during HFNC oxygen therapy was developed and sent to respiratory therapists, speech-language pathologists, physic

High-Flow Nasal Cannula Versus Noninvasive Ventilation in Patients With COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) have been widely used in patients with acute hypoxic respiratory failure (AHRF) due to COVID-19. However, the impact of HFNC versus NIV on clinical outcomes of COVID-19 is uncertain. Therefore, we performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of HFNC versus NIV in COVID-19-related AHRF. METHODS: Several electronic databases were searched through February 10, 2022, for eligible studies comparing HFNC and NIV in COVID-19-related AHRF. Our primary outcome was intubation. The secondary outcomes were mortalit

Application of High-Flow Nasal Cannula in COVID-19: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: During the first wave of COVID-19, the large influx of severely ill patients led to insufficient availability of beds in intensive care units and a shortage of ventilators. The shortage of ventilators, high mortality of intubated patients, and high risk of infections among healthcare workers involved in intubation were the main factors that led to the prevalence of noninvasive respiratory support during the pandemic. The high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is a commonly used, popular form of noninvasive respiratory support. Due to its unique physiological effects, HFNC can provide a hig

Ultrasound-guided placement of long peripheral cannula in children with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: The natural history of cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease is a chronic deterioration of lung function with intermittent episodes of pulmonary infectious exacerbations (PExs). Reliable venous access is a milestone of effective management of such exacerbations, managed both in hospital and outpatient chronic therapy. The aim of our study was to analyze the feasibility of ultrasound-guided positioning of long peripheral catheters (LPC) as reliable midterm venous access in children affected by CF. METHODS: In this single-center prospective study, over a 60-month period, we included pae

ERS clinical practice guidelines: high-flow nasal cannula in acute respiratory failure.

BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) has become a frequently used noninvasive form of respiratory support in acute settings; however, evidence supporting its use has only recently emerged. These guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the use of HFNC alongside other noninvasive forms of respiratory support in adults with acute respiratory failure (ARF). MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: The European Respiratory Society task force panel included expert clinicians and methodologists in pulmonology and intensive care medicine. The task force used the GRADE (Grading of Recommendation

Factors associated with failure of using high flow nasal cannula in children.

INTRODUCTION: High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) has significantly success in treating acute respiratory distress while HFNC failure dramatically increases mortality and morbidity. OBJECTIVE: To describe factors associated with failure of HFNC use in children. METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational study using demographic and laboratory findings. We compared clinical and laboratory variables in both successful and failed HFNC groups. The correlations between factors and HFNC failure were constructed by binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Between August 2016 and May 2018,

Home High-Flow Nasal Cannula Therapy in Children with Congenital Heart Disease.

High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy has been applied in the perioperative respiratory care for children with congenital heart disease and respiratory problems. However, the information about the feasibility of home HFNC therapy remains lacking among them. We retrospectively reviewed 5 children with congenital heart disease and respiratory problems who underwent home HFNC therapy, and evaluated their feasibility and safety. Age and weight at the introduction of home HFNC therapy were 19 (2-119) months and 5.3 (3.1-11.4) kg, respectively. All subjects had chromosomal anomaly including trisomy

A novel arthroscopic pre-curved cannula with both flexibility and high stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Curved surgical instruments are being developed to expand the workspace of straight surgical instruments. They are required to have a small diameter and high stiffness. METHODS: We developed a double-spring pre-curved cannula (DSPC) for electrocauterization, which has curved movements controlled solely by translational motion, and high stiffness via wire tension. It comprises a straight extension spring, pre-curved flat spring and braided high-modulus polyethylene line. A handheld device was designed for intuitive DSPC manipulation. The cannula has a 3.9 mm diameter and serves as

Minimally invasive and inexpensive percutaneous abscess drainage using an indwelling needle cannula.

PURPOSE: Abscess is still a formidable disease and requires adequate drainage. Moreover, drainage in the head and neck area needs cosmetic care, especially in the pediatric population. In this report, we introduce our method of percutaneous abscess drainage using an indwelling needle cannula. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten pediatric and five adult patients with cervical and/or facial abscess treated with this drainage method were retrospectively reviewed. Using an indwelling needle cannula (18-14 G Surflow®, Terumo, Tokyo, Japan), abscesses were penetrated under ultrasonic examination. Once purule

[New oropharyngeal double lumen cannula for sedation for transesophageal echocardiography: case series].

INTRODUCTION: Currently, transesophageal echodopplercardiography is frequently performed under sedation on an outpatient basis. Sedation is related with increase in incidents on airways. Bearing in mind this scenario, we developed a new double lumen oropharyngeal cannula aimed at keeping airway patency, in addition to reducing risks to patients during endoscopy procedures performed under sedation. The main objective of our study was to assess the incidence of oxygen desaturation in a series of cases of adult patients submitted to outpatient transesophageal echo exam, under sedation and using t

Comparing cannula-based subcision with the common needle method: A clinical trial.

OF TRIAL DESIGN: Treatment of depressed acne scars requires multiple modalities. Although needle subcision is a valuable method, it exhibits mild to moderate efficacy in treatment of deep acne scars owing to the high recurrence rate and other side effects. A total of 100 patients with rolling acne scars were randomly treated using the standard technique of 18 gauge cannula and 27 gauge needle subcision in two parallel groups, and the effect of cannula subcision instead of needle subcision was evaluated in the treatment of rolling acne scars. METHODS: A total of 100 patients were randomly trea

High flow through nasal cannula in exacerbated COPD patients: a systematic review.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) history is characterized by episodes of exacerbation of varying severity, featured by acute worsening of respiratory symptoms, commonly precipitated by respiratory tract infection. The recent ERS/ATS clinical practice guidelines strongly recommend the application of non invasive ventilation (NIV) for patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) leading to acute or acute-on-chronic respiratory acidosis (pH 7.35) and not for those patients with acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) and hypercapnia who are not acidotic. In recent years, High-Flow throug

Single-port laparoscopic herniorrhaphy using a two-hooked cannula device with hydrodissection.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (LPEC) with variable devices seems to be one of the most simple and reliable methods. We described our modifications of single-port laparoscopic herniorrhaphy using an inner two-hooked cannula device with preperitoneal hydrodissection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 1568 children with 2114 inguinal hernias were treated by single-port LPEC. Under laparoscopic visualization, the two-hooked cannula device carrying a silk suture was inserted at the point of the internal ring and could be readily kept in an identical path. The hernia orifice was

Respiratory support with heated humidified high flow nasal cannula in preterm infants.

The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has not decreased over the last decade. The most important way to decrease BPD is by weaning the patient from the ventilator as soon as possible in order to reduce ventilator-induced lung injury that underlies BPD, and by using a noninvasive ventilator (NIV). Use of a heated, humidified, high flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC), which is the most recently introduced NIV mode for respiratory support in preterm infants, is rapidly increasing in many neonatal intensive care units due to the technical ease of use without sealing, and the attending physicia
