Risk profile for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation.

Transplant recipients have an unfavorable cardiovascular risk profile and experience more cardiovascular morbidity and mortality compared with the general population, primarily because of immunosuppressant-induced diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. These discouraging prospects are even more ominous for lung transplant recipients who are more likely than other organ recipients to require intense immunosuppression and develop these conditions early and concomitantly. The purposes of this article are to heighten awareness of the prevalence, risk factors, and management of diabetes, hyper

Intrapartum Maternal Cardiac Arrest: A Simulation Case for Multidisciplinary Providers.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac arrest in pregnancy is rare. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support courses rarely address interventions specific to obstetric patients, and knowledge gaps are frequent among providers. The Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology and American Heart Association have published guidelines regarding management of cardiac arrest in pregnancy, and interdisciplinary simulation training has been advocated to reinforce key management points for this clinical scenario. METHODS: In situ multidisciplinary simulation training was implemented for anesthesia and maternal fetal

Emotional Freedom Technique: Reducing Stress, Anxiety, and Burnout in Critical Care Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Critical care nurses often experience stress, anxiety, and burnout as a result of their high-stress work environments, frequent life-or-death situations, frequent need to make critical decisions, and high-acuity patients. These negative emotional states-which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic-may affect their work, personal lives, and overall well-being. LOCAL PROBLEM: A survey of employees of a cardiovascular specialty hospital showed that 9.7% of nurses working in the intensive care unit rated their degree of stress at work as unmanageable, with 8.3% reporting moderate s

Occupational radiation exposure to the head is higher for scrub nurses than cardiologists during cardiac angiography.

AIMS: This study aimed to compare the head dose of a cardiologist to scrub and scout nurses during cardiac angiography. DESIGN: A correlational longitudinal quantitative design was used to examine the relationship between the variable of occupational dose to the medical operator when compared with the dose to the scrub and scout nurses. METHODS: A quantitative analysis was performed on data collected during coronary angiograms (N = 612) for one cardiologist and 22 nurses performing either the scrub or scout role between May 2015 and February 2017. Analysis was based on log-transformed dose l

Therapeutic options for lowering LDL-C in type 2 diabetes: a nurse practitioner's perspective.

PURPOSE: The majority of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a key therapeutic target to reduce CVD risk. This article reviews therapeutic strategies that nurse practitioners (NPs) may use in the management of patients with T2DM requiring lipid management. DATA SOURCES: The evidence used in developing this review included evidence-based reviews, clinical trials, guidelines, and consensus statements. Relevant publications were identified through a search of the literature using

[The satisfaction of the clients of an outpatient consultation in view of the nursing team's approach].

The present research work about "the satisfaction of the clients of an out-patient department toward the approach of the nursing team" was carried out in a central hospital, in Lisbon, with a sample of 82 clients. The principal subjects broached on the biliography revision are: some risk factors of cardiovascular disease and the client approach. We have found at the end of this study that the precordial pain, the arrhythmias and the arterial hypertension, are the main causes that alert the clients, as well as the health professionals who send them to this department to a precocious diagnosis o

Documentation-derived nursing process indicators and in-hospital outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction undergoing PCI: A cohort study.

In-hospital outcomes after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated with percutaneous coronary intervention remain variable. Documentation-derived nursing process indicators may act as proxy markers of clinical acuity, surveillance intensity, and care complexity, but their association with short-term outcomes remains unclear. This single-center retrospective cohort study included consecutive adults with AMI. Nursing process indicators were extracted from routine nursing records, including assessment frequency, monitoring intensity, documentation density, and selected observational items. The

Improving equitable healthcare resource use: developing a neighbourhood district nurse needs index for staffing allocation.

BACKGROUND: Allocating healthcare resources to local areas in proportion to need is an important element of many universal health care systems, aiming to provide equal access for equal need. The UK National Health Service allocates resources to relatively large areas in proportion to need, using needs-weighted capitation formulae. However, within those planning areas, local providers and commissioners also require robust methods for allocating resources to neighbourhoods in proportion to need to ensure equitable access. We therefore developed a local resource allocation formula for NHS distric

A Nurse-Led Metamemory-Based Intervention to Improve Medication Adherence in Older Adults With H-Type Hypertension: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: H-type hypertension substantially increases cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk in older adults, yet long-term medication adherence remains suboptimal. Beyond regimen complexity, age-related cognitive vulnerability and limited self-monitoring capacity may undermine adherence. However, few nurse-led interventions explicitly target memory-related mechanisms underlying medication-taking behavior. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led, metamemory-based intervention in improving medication adherence and related cognitive and psychosocial outcomes in older adults w

Climate Protection and Climate Change Adaptation in Residential and Nursing Homes: Perspectives and Fields of Action from Expert Interviews.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly affecting the health of vulnerable population groups, particularly older adults living in residential and nursing homes. Heat, extreme weather events, air pollution, altered allergen exposure and other climate-related factors increase the risk of dehydration, cardiovascular diseases, infections, psychological strain and social isolation. At the same time, the health sector itself is a significant emitter of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and is particularly vulnerable due to demographic changes and rising care needs. METHODS: Interviews with experts from resid

Developing and evaluating machine learning-based risk models for metabolic syndrome among nurses: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Nurses have a higher risk of metabolic syndrome due to high work pressure and irregular lifestyle. Early recognition of metabolic syndrome is essential to prevent related complications and improve nurse health. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was used to collect valid questionnaire data of 900 nurses. Univariate analysis and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were used to screen the key variables. Logistic regression, random forest, XGBoost, support vector machine and neural ne

Evaluation of Polygenic Scores and CT Imaging in Risk Factor Modification in Patients With Diabetes: Rationale and Design of the VOLTAIRE Study.

BACKGROUND: The contemporary management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) involves a multifaceted model of care integrating intensive management of lipids, blood pressure, and glucose, along with lifestyle modifications. Despite these efforts, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with T2D, largely due to suboptimal adherence to preventive strategies. The VOLTAIRE trial aims to assess the impact of providing personalized cardiovascular risk information derived from computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) and a polygenic risk score (PRS) o
