Multicentric physeal dysplasia in two cats.

Feline physeal dysplasia typically presents as unilateral or bilateral, atraumatic, slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The femoral physeal lesion consists of retention of a cartilaginous physis beyond the expected age of closure, with disorganization of the chondrocytes and subsequent slippage. In this article, we describe two cats with feline physeal dysplasia and slipped capital femoral epiphysis that died of unrelated causes (cardiomyopathy and lymphosarcoma). At necropsy, additional sites were found to have retained physes with similar abnormal arrangement of chondrocytes. This confirms th

Mycoplasma felis arthritis in two cats.

This report describes the occurrence of non-weightbearing lameness caused by Mycoplasma felis monoarthritis in two, immunocompetent, European, shorthair adult cats with a suspected history of trauma. Clinical signs recurred after conservative treatment. The joints were treated surgically and M felis was identified as the causative agent for the monoarthritis. Medication with 10 mg/kg doxycycline twice daily was initiated according to susceptibility testing. One cat underwent further joint flushing after two weeks; both the cats recovered completely after eight and nine weeks, respectively. The

Adnexal surgery in dogs and cats.

Abnormalities in eyelid position and function can lead to chronic irritation of cornea and conjunctiva. Corneal ulceration, vascularization and pigmentation are common consequences. Loss of vision, or loss of the globe may be the end result. The combination of ptosis and entropion of the upper eyelid is commonly seen in breeds with abundant forehead skin folds. Treatment options include surgical reduction of skin folds, suspending the brows, enforced secondary granulation of the upper eyelid, or a combination of procedures. Lid-shortening procedures reduce corneal exposure, improve functional

Lead toxicosis in cats-a review.

Although the incidence of lead toxicosis in small animals continues to decrease, it remains a significant malady. We have reviewed the literature of the past 45 years, which revealed 70 cases involving cats. Sources, signs, diagnosis, pathology and treatment of feline lead toxicosis are reviewed. In 84% of these cases the source of lead was old paint usually from home renovation. The most common signs in cats are anorexia, vomiting, and seizures. The younger individuals seem more likely to show CNS signs. Since signs are often vague, lead toxicosis may be significantly under diagnosed in cats.

Hookworms of feral cats in Florida.

Thirty feral cats (Felis catus) from Alachua county (northern Florida) and 30 from Palm Beach county (southern Florida) were examined for hookworms. Two species, Ancylostoma tubaeforme and Ancylostoma braziliense, were identified. Forty-five cats (75%) were infected with A. tubaeforme, with a mean intensity of 48 hookworms per cat. Twenty cats (33%) were infected with A. braziliense, with a mean intensity of 28 worms per cat. The prevalence of A. tubaeforme was greater than that of A. braziliense in Alachua (P=0.002) and Palm Beach (P=0.004) counties. The intensity of A. tubaeforme infections

Cranial mediastinal cysts in nine cats.

Nine cats, from 11 to 17 years of age (mean 13.6 years of age), were diagnosed with a cranial mediastinal cyst. Thoracic radiographs in all cats were characterized by an increased soft tissue opacity in the cranial mediastinum confirmed to be a cyst by ultrasonography or necropsy. Ultrasonographically cysts appeared as an anechoic mass. A low-cellularity clear fluid was obtained on aspiration. The majority of the cats (n = 8) presented for unrelated conditions with no signs of respiratory distress. No treatment for the cyst was pursued except for drainage during ultrasonographic-guided aspirat

Histopathology of experimental plague in cats.

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded archival tissues of seven adult cats of both sexes that died after being experimentally infected with Yersinia pestis were examined light microscopically to characterize the lesions. The cats were exposed in two groups using two routes of infection: ingestion of Y. pestis-infected rodent or a subcutaneous injection of Y. pestis to simulate a flea bite. Immunohistochemistry was performed on tissues from all organ systems from a representative cat from each group to determine the distribution of Y. pestis bacilli during infection. In all seven cats, bubonic plagu

Atypical primary ocular melanoma in cats.

The clinical and pathologic features of six cases of atypical primary ocular melanoma in cats are described. In contrast to diffuse iris melanomas, these atypical tumors originated multifocally from any portion of the uvea and in five of the six cases were very advanced at the time of clinical presentation. Two of the advanced cases involved primarily the ciliary body, while three others showed extensive involvement of the choroid. Histologically, these tumors consisted primarily of round, heavily pigmented cells lacking the anaplastic nuclear features characteristic of advanced diffuse iris m

[2 cases of cryptococcosis in cats].

In two cats, a Persian and a D.S.H. cat, cutaneous Cryptococcosis is described. No signs of involvement of other organ systems nor underlying causes were established. One cat seemed refractory to ketoconazole-therapy. In both cats the skin lesions disappeared within 2-3 months itraconazole treatment. Latex agglutination tests against Cryptococci capsula antigen were performed and stayed longtime elevated while clinical lesions were not present anymore. The test may give an indication about prognosis.

Spontaneous systemic hypertension in 24 cats.

Twenty-four cats with spontaneous systemic hypertension were retrospectively studied. Blood pressure (BP) was measured indirectly by the Doppler technique in 17 cats (mean systolic 219.4 +/- 43.2 mm Hg) and directly by femoral arterial puncture in 15 cats (mean systolic/diastolic 233.2 +/- 40.9/148.1 +/- 28.7 mm Hg). All cats had bilateral retinal hemorrhages and/or detachments. Twenty cats presented because of blindness. Other presenting signs included polyuria/polydipsia, weight loss, neurological signs, and/or epistaxis. Diagnostic tests were performed to determine the presence and the caus

Toxicologic effects of ribavirin in cats.

Ribavirin, a broad-spectrum antiviral agent active in vitro against a number of RNA and DNA viruses, has been associated with moderate toxicity in laboratory animals and humans. Clinically, ribavirin has been used effectively in persons primarily to treat life-threatening viral diseases such as acute haemorrhagic fever or viral pneumonia of infants. In order to evaluate the feasibility of using this antiviral agent in cats, the effects of oral (p.o.), intramuscular (i.m.) and intravenous (i.v.) doses of ribavirin in 27 9-month-old specific-pathogen-free cats were evaluated by haematology, clin

Radioimmunoassay of parathyroid hormone in cats.

A radioimmunoassay for measurement of midmolecule parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentration in serum from dogs was validated for use on serum from cats. The assay detected an increase in serum concentration of PTH after IV infusion of Na2 EDTA in healthy cats. Infusion of calcium chloride caused a decrease in measured PTH. Accuracy of the assay was demonstrated by quantitative recovery of a feline parathyroid gland extract added to pooled feline sera. Mean interassay and intra-assay coefficients of variation were 0.13 and 0.07, respectively. Sensitivity of the assay was 0.1 ng of PTH/ml. The med

Acute tularemia in three domestic cats.

Acute Francisella tularensis infection in 3 domestic cats was presumptively diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs and lesions and confirmed by culturing or immunofluorescent demonstration of the organism. Clinical findings include marked signs of depression, oral/lingual ulceration, regional or generalized lymphadenomegaly, hepatosplenomegaly, panleukopenia with severe toxic change of neutrophils, and hyperbilirubinemia with bilirubinuria. Lesions found at necropsy included icterus, oropharyngeal and lingual ulceration, multiple foci of necrosis in lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and lung, and

[Aujeszky's disease in dogs and cats].

Pigs are either directly or indirectly the source of infection with Herpes virus suis in dogs and cats. On oral or oronasal infection, the virus is spread by way of the cranial nerves to the central nervous system. The incubation period is short: from one to six days. The disease is mainly characterised by nervous disorders. Pruritus is a characteristic clinical sign but is not present in every case. Mortality in dogs and cats is a hundred per cent. In rural areas, infection is caused by consumption of uncooked pork or offal from pigs. Prevention is possible by avoiding exposure to pigs or fre

The causes of glaucoma in cats.

The cause of glaucoma in 131 enucleated eyes from 128 cats was determined in a retrospective histologic study. Obliteration of the ciliary cleft by diffuse iridal melanoma (38 eyes), or other neoplasms (14 eyes), or by the presence of idiopathic lymphocytic-plasmacytic anterior uveitis (53 eyes) were the most frequent lesions likely to explain the development of glaucoma. Secondary changes of inner retinal atrophy, optic disc cupping, scleral thinning with megaglobus, and atrophy of ciliary processes were similar to those described in dogs and human beings with chronic glaucoma. In light of th
