In children, 23 caustic injuries of oesophagus with deep lesions (second or third degree of burn) were treated in pediatric ENT department (Pr ANDRIEU--Rouen) during a 19 years long period. Endoscopy in emergency, nasogastric tube for stent and repeated dilatations were the bases of the treatment. 14 second degree burns and 7 third degree burns were complicated of 9 stenosis and one death. The mean duration of total treatment was 43 months. The mean number of dilatations was 38 months. 4 stenosis were definitely cured. 8 children had normal feeding. Mean following was 8 years with good long te

BACKGROUND: Caustic ingestion-induced microstomia causes profound functional impairment, which limits mouth opening, speech, feeding, and overall quality of life, particularly in children. Published management strategies are heterogeneous and lack a standardized treatment protocol.
METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review (PROSPERO CRD420251106502) of the literature on caustic ingestion-induced microstomia and present a series of 11 patients treated using a standardized institutional protocol. Data collected included demographics, causative agents, surgical techniques, appli

OBJECTIVE: To analyze histological features of esophageal strictures in children with chemical burn following ingestion of household products containing sodium (potassium) hypochlorite, sodium (potassium) hydroxide.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed 3 children with complicated caustic esophageal burns. Children at the time of swallowing the caustic were 26.3±4.1 months. Multiple dilatations of esophageal stricture were ineffective. Therefore, extirpation or subtotal resection of the esophagus and esophagocoloplasty were performed. We stained specimens using hematoxylin and eosin, as well as M

BACKGROUND: Caustic ingestion can lead to structural changes in the upper gastrointestinal tract. However, there are limited data on the effect of caustic ingestion on gastric secretion. This study was planned to determine the changes in gastric acid output in patients with caustic ingestion.
METHODS: It was a prospective study done at a tertiary care center in northern India. Twenty consecutive patients in chronic phase of caustic ingestion were evaluated for the study. The gastric secretory function was estimated in the basal state and following pentagastrin stimulation. These results were

Children inevitably swallow foreign material accidentally or intentionally. Each type of ingestion carries their own set of risks and complications, short and long term, some requiring immediate attention while others close monitoring. Alkalotic household cleaning products and lithium button batteries are increasingly common and damage the esophagus quickly. While many toys with rare-earth metals are banned, they are already present in many households and can cause necrosis of bowel that is between the magnets. This article reviews the incidence and assessment along with current literature to

We present a case of caustic ingestion by a 1.5-year-old boy. The caustic agent was drain opener which is a strong alkaline substance. Children in Iran and many other countries are still exposed to not "child proof" (child resistant packaging) toxic substance containers. Ingestion of caustic agents may lead to necrosis, perforation, and strictures. Substances that are ingested more frequently are liquid alkali material which causes severe, deep liquefaction necrosis. Common signs and symptoms of caustic agents are vomiting, drooling, refusal to drink, oral burns, stridor, hematemesis, dyspnea,

Adult ingestion of caustic substances is an unusual but serious surgical problem, with injuries likely to be more extensive than those in the corresponding paediatric population. After initial stabilisation and airway management, clinicians are presented with a complex multisystemic problem, frequently requiring a multidisciplinary approach involving several surgical disciplines and associated therapies. A new multidisciplinary team was convened to discuss complex ingestion injury in adults and established techniques were used to bring forward a proposed treatment algorithm. An algorithm may p

A 37-year-old incarcerated man presented to the accident and emergency department following the deliberate ingestion of eight cylindrical batteries. He also admitted to inserting a razor blade wrapped in cling-film into his rectum; in addition, he sustained a self-inflicted laceration to his left antecubital fossa, using the metal casing from a battery. His medical history included a borderline and emotionally unstable personality disorder. He had ingested several batteries 12 months previously and required an emergency laparotomy to retrieve them. On the present admission, as there was no cli

BACKGROUND: Household product ingestion is the second cause of visiting an Emergency Department for poisoning in children. Among these products, caustics are of great interest because of their potential toxicity and risk of sequelae.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiological and clinical features of patients admitted to our hospital due to possible caustic ingestion. To analyse the risk factors associated with oesophageal or gastric injury. To review the latest treatment recommendations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients admitted with suspicion of caustic ingestio

CONTEXT: The alkaline oesophageal burn (EB) is a very debilitating injury and common in the southern rural area of Iran, where the air conditioning systems are cleaned with an alkaline liquid, which is accidentally ingested by children.
AIMS: The aim is to share our experiences with caustic injury in children.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A 'before' and 'after' clinical trial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From November 2006-2009, 35 cases of alkaline burns were referred to our center. All underwent flexible endoscopy and thereafter received steroid, antibiotic and H2 blocker. They subsequently underwent

Chromium is widely used in various industries including construction sector. Skin contact with cement has been associated with allergic or irritant contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is one of the most frequently reported health problems among construction workers. Irritant contact dermatitis from cement ranges from cement burns to cumulative irritant contact dermatitis. Cement burns are rarely reported and are considered a severe form of acute irritant contact dermatitis. They are associated with amateur user working in a short ready-mix time-frame with poor protective measures. They usua

Ingested corrosive agents produce oropharyngeal and gastroesophageal injuries ranging from minor burns to severe necrosis, depending on the agent amount, concentration, and duration of exposure. The aim of this study was to present our patients with corrosive ingestion retrospectively. Four hundred seventy-three children younger than 16 years of age (mean age, 3.7+/-0.1 years) who were admitted to our hospital for suspected corrosive ingestion between the years 1995 and 2003 were studied. Two hundred eighty-six (60.5%) of 473 patients were males. Household bleaches (36.6%) and oven cleaners (2

From June 1985 to May 1998, 20 patients have been treated in our hospital by esophageal dilatations due to serious esophageal caustic stenosis. A retrospective analysis of these 20 patients was performed, evaluating age, sex, causative agent, number and time of dilatations, iatrogenic esophageal perforations, gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and psychological and social consequences. Follow-up has ranged from 1.5 to 14.5 years (mean = 8.07 years). The mean age at the time of accidental swallow was 42.2 months. The causative agent was dishwashing detergent in 11 patients and caustic soda in 9 pati

Caustic esophageal stricture is one of the most common indications for esophageal replacement in children. During a 13-year period between 1976 and 1989, colonic replacement was performed in 50 patients for the treatment of caustic esophageal strictures at the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Hacettepe University Children's Hospital. A retrospective clinical study was undertaken to discuss the indications and results of colonic replacement. The 50 children, 34 of whom were male (68%) and 16 of whom were female (32%) with 27 patients (54%) under 6 years of age, were evaluated retrospectively.
