BACKGROUND: There is evidence that the factors contributing to the prevalence and aetiology of hearing impairment vary widely from one country to another. In South Africa, as in other low-income and middle-income countries, more context-specific information on the estimated prevalence of hearing impairment and the factors that contribute to its onset is required.
AIM: The aim of this study was to provide decision-makers and hearing health professionals with local and accurate information on the prevalence of ear and hearing disorders in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipal (EMLM) area of the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Demographic trends show an increasing older adult population. Therefore, family medicine training programs may need to reevaluate how well their residents perform clinic procedures essential to older adults. Our objective was to compare the rates of the most frequently performed clinic procedures for Medicare patients in a large multiregional health care system (MRHCS) with those in a family medicine residency clinic.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, Current Procedural Terminology coding data were queried from the billing systems of an MRHCS (the control

Exostosis of the external ear canal is a disease unique to man. It has been identified in prehistoric man, affecting the aborigines of the North American continent. Aural exostoses are typically firm, sessile, multinodular bony masses which arise from the tympanic ring of the bony portion of the external auditory canal. These growths develop subsequent to prolonged irritation of the canal. The large, primitive jaw of prehistoric man placed great mechanical stress on the tympanic ring. Chronic aural suppuration seen in the preantibiotic era was soon followed by exostoses. Today, prolonged conta

BACKGROUND: Problems attributed to the accumulation of wax (cerumen) are one of the most common reasons for people to present to their general practitioners with ear trouble (Sharp 1990). Treatment for this condition often involves use of a wax softening agent (cerumenolytic) in order to disperse the cerumen and reduce the need for syringing, or to facilitate syringing should it prove necessary, but there is no consensus on the effectiveness of the wide variety of cerumenolytics in use.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of ear drops (cerumenolytics) for the removal of symptomatic ear wa

INTRODUCTION: Hearing impairment is one of the communication disorders of the 21st century, constituting a public health issue as it affects communication, academic success, and life quality of students. Most cases of hearing loss before 15 years of age are avoidable, and early detection can help prevent academic delays and minimize other consequences.
OBJECTIVE: This study researched scientific literature for the prevalence of hearing impairment in school-aged children and adolescents, with its associated factors. This was accomplished by asking the defining question: "What is the prevalence

Outer and middle ear pathologies are known to disproportionately affect low-income countries but data is limited. We aim to quantify the prevalence rate of patients presenting with middle/outer ear pathologies at ABC Hearing Clinic and Training Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi. Audiological consultations (adult and paediatric) from 2018-2020 were reviewed for outer and middle ear pathologies. Secondary outcomes included patient type (private vs. community) compared to otoscopy findings, tympanometry findings, need for follow up, and follow up compliance. Out of 1576 patients reviewed, the proportion

BACKGROUND: Build-up of earwax is a common reason for attendance in primary care. Current practice for earwax removal generally involves the use of a softening agent, followed by irrigation of the ear if required. However, the safety and benefits of the different methods of removal are not known for certain.
OBJECTIVES: To conduct evidence synthesis of the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the interventions currently available for softening and/or removing earwax and any adverse events (AEs) associated with the interventions.
DATA SOURCES: Eleven electronic resources were sear

OBJECTIVE: Ceruminous neoplasms of the external ear canal are rare. Classification, clinical behavior, and management of these tumours are controversial. We report a case of carcinoma originating from the ceruminous glands of the external ear canal (EAC), operated based on a diagnosis of chronic otitis media with polyp.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old man presented with left ear discharge and hearing loss. Clinical examination showed a well-circumscribed polypoid mass limited to the EAC. There was no history of bloody ear discharge or radiological findings of bony erosion suggestive of malignancy.

Thirty-six patients with symptoms of impacted ear wax were recruited to an open, randomized, parallel group study of 'Audax' ear drops and 'Earex' ear drops. Patients had had their symptoms for several weeks and they were assessed on entry for the degree of impaction in each ear. After using the drops, morning and evening for 4 days, they were assessed on the fifth day for degree of impaction, ease of syringing, side-effects or discomfort, and the investigator's and patient's own global impression of efficacy of the ear drops. A trend was seen showing less impaction post-treatment in the 'Auda

Hearing impairment and otologic problems have been reported to be prevalent among individuals with Down syndrome. This study was designed to determine whether children with Down syndrome have a higher prevalence of auditory abnormalities than do children with other forms of mental retardation. Hearing, impedance, and otoscopic examinations were performed on 30 children with Down syndrome and 30 children without Down syndrome matched for CA and IQ. Results indicated that the children with Down syndrome had a significantly higher prevalence of hearing impairment and otologic disorders.

The intention of this study was to gain insight into the pathogenesis, pathophysiology and course of middle ear effusions by means of an animal experiment. Simultaneously the clinical relevance of an electro-acoustical, non-invasive diagnostic procedure should be evaluated. Furthermore a method which permits prognostic statements had to be established using viscosimetry, in order to plan therapy for this most common childhood disease. The questions asked initially can be answered along the following lines: 1. The pathogenesis of middle ear effusions caused by a tubal dysfunction is submitted t
