[Variation of the transverse apophysis of the 7th cervical vertebra: anatomo-radiological study of an isolated population].

The authors investigated the morphological changes in the transverse apophysis of C VII by Rx study on an isolated population. Two variations were mainly observed: the transverse mega-apophysis and the cervical rib. The authors found a remarkable incidence of variations, more than the average of the literature. Authors suppose that this results can be attributed at the geographical and economical isolation of the population and they hypothesize a genetic transmission of recessive autosomal type.

[Double gunshot head injury with lesion of the upper cervical vertebrae in a case of attempted suicide].

The authors hold their case reported in this paper interesting for the following reasons: in several minutes two shots were fired by intention of suicide. Two entrance openings were found that had the characteristics of shots fired within close range, but no exit openings were to be seen. Considering the entrance openings, the bilateral fracture of the atlas and a comminuted unilateral fracture of the axis and spotting the jammed missiles inside the tunnel, one must deduce that the missiles went by vital structures without severing them.

Evaluation of skeletal maturity in the cervical vertebrae and hand-wrist in relation to vertical facial types.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in skeletal maturity in relation to vertical facial types and to compare differences in the skeletal maturity of the cervical vertebrae and hand-wrist in females. METHODS: This study included 59 females aged 7 to 9 years with skeletal Class I malocclusion. The participants were categorized into three groups (low, normal, and high) according to the mandibular plane angle. Skeletal maturity was measured using skeletal maturity indicators (SMIs) and the Tanner-Whitehouse III (TW3) method on hand-wrist radiographs and by using cervical vertebrae maturation indic

Osseous hemangioma of the seventh cervical vertebra with osteoid formation mimicking metastasis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: We report the case of an osseous hemangioma located in the seventh cervical vertebra with reactive osteoid formation and non-typical findings in the radiological and the histopathological examination, mimicking metastasis of a malignant tumor. To our knowledge, this is the first description of such a case in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old otherwise healthy Caucasian German woman presented with a discrete sensorimotor loss of both upper limbs. Radiologically, an osteolysis in the seventh cervical vertebra suggestive of metastasis of a malignant neoplasm was diag

Three-dimensional finite element modeling of a cervical vertebra: an investigation of burst fracture mechanism.

Finite element modeling was used to study the mechanical behavior of a cervical vertebra under axial compressive loading. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) model of a mid-cervical vertebra using inhomogeneous material properties was generated from quantitative computed tomographic (CT) scan data. This model improved upon previous vertebral FE models by using a highly refined mesh to represent the 3-D variation in material properties of vertebral bone. Traumatic loading of the vertebra was simulated by applying an axial compressive displacement through linear spring elements. Bone s

[Familial anomaly of the seventh cervical vertebra. Radio-clinic comparison in a fourteen member family].

We report a fourteen member family presenting with an anomaly of the seventh cervical vertebra. The symptoms associate pain and paresthesias, a C8-D1 syndrome or arterial manifestations. The radiologic lesions noticed are bilateral in twelve cases, either cervical ribs or apophysomegaly of the seventh vertebra's transverse process. There is no correlation between the severity of the clinical impairment and the importance of the radiologic image. We insist on the familial character rarely reported in the literature of an anomaly noticed in radiologic practice.

[Phalanx-like osseous structure posterior to the cervical vertebrae: a hitherto unreported location for a rare anomaly].

Several types of abnormalities of the vertebral column have been reported. Pelvic rib or pelvic digit is a rare congenital anomaly of the spine. A 58-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of a firm mass in the neck. He had no history of trauma and had been aware of the mass for years. Physical examination showed a painless and immobile mass in the neck, measuring 4 x 1 cm. About 10 to 15 degrees of restriction was noted in neck movements, with slight pain. A plain radiograph of the cervical region showed two bony formations resembling a coccygeal segment or a phalanx, posterior to t

[The styloid syndrome. Differential diagnosis of degenerative diseases of the cervical vertebrae--case report with literature review].

Elongated Styloid Process Syndrome requires its consideration in differential diagnosis of degenerative disease of the cervical spine. Radiating pain on certain movements of the cervical spine is a symptom of an elongated styloid process as well. First basic anatomy and pathology, symptoms and differential diagnosis of the elongated styloid syndrome are discussed. A case history is presented together with X-rays of the cervical spine and images of three dimensional CT-reconstruction to show the full length of an elongated styloid process.

Outcome of Ventral Fusion of Two or Three Cervical Vertebrae with a Locking Compression Plate for the Treatment of Cervical Stenotic Myelopathy in Eight Horses.

OBJECTIVES: It was recently shown that biomechanical stability achieved with a locking compression plate (LCP) for ventral cervical fusion in horses is similar to the commonly used Kerf cut cylinder. The advantages of the LCP system render it an interesting implant for this indication. The goal of this report was to describe surgical technique, complications and outcome of horses that underwent ventral fusion of two or three cervical vertebrae with an LCP. METHODS: Medical records of eight horses were reviewed for patient data, history, preoperative grade of ataxia, diagnostic imaging, surgic
