Effectiveness of Mass Drug Administration on Neglected Tropical Diseases in Schoolchildren in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Soil-transmitted helminths and Schistosoma haematobium affect more than 3 billion people globally and mainly occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The present study assessed the overall infection status of a 1716-student cohort of school-children in Zanzibar and applied mass drug administration (MDA) to the cohort from 2007 to 2009. Schools in Pemba, Zanzibar, had a much higher prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections than those in Unguja, and the Chaani, Ghana, and Machui schools of Unguja exhibited high S. haematobium infection rates. The MDA program only partially controlled parasite infec

Disinfectants/antiseptics in the management of guinea worm ulcers in the rural areas.

The effectiveness of trichlorophenol (TCP), chlorhexidine gluconate plus cetrimide (Savlon) and Izal in inhibiting the growth of bacterial isolates from guinea worm ulcers was investigated. Using an adaptation of the method of Russell and Furr (Russell, A.D., Furr, J.R., 1977. The antibacterial activity of a new chloroxylenol preparation containing ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. J. Appl. Bacteriol. 43, 253-260) the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the three anti-microbial agents for each of the isolated bacteria was determined. Water drawn from the rural guinea worm endemic

Child and teacher acceptability of school-based echocardiographic screening for rheumatic heart disease in Uganda.

UNLABELLED: Introduction Rheumatic heart disease causes substantial morbidity in children in low-income countries. School-based echocardiographic screening has been suggested as a means to identify children with latent disease; however, little is known about the experience of children and teachers participating in screenings. The aim of our study was to assess students' and teachers' experience of school-based echocardiographic screening and identify areas for improvement. Materials and methods A school-based echocardiographic screening programme was conducted in five schools in Northern Ugand

Prevalence of atrial arrhythmias in arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) is an inherited cardiomyopathy, characterized by right ventricular dysfunction and ventricular arrhythmias. Limited information is available concerning atrial arrhythmias in ARVD/C. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize spontaneous atrial arrhythmias in a large registry population of ARVD/C patients. METHODS: Patients (n = 248) from the Johns Hopkins ARVD/C registry who met the diagnostic criteria and had undertaken genotype analysis were included. Medical records of each were reviewed to ascert

A comparison of the efficacy of normal saline and Savlon solutions in periurethral cleaning to reduce catheter-associated bacteriuria: A randomized control trial.

OBJECTIVE: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a common nosocomial infection. However, there has been no randomized control trial (RCT) comparing the efficacy of periurethral cleaning solutions for reducing CAUTI. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of normal saline solution (NSS) and Savlon solution. METHODS: A non-inferiority cross-over RCT was conducted to compare the 2 solutions by the incidence of significant bacteriuria (SB) on day 5 after Foley catheterization. Patients admitted to a tertiary referral hospital from June 2018 to August 2019 participated in the st

Antimicrobial effectiveness of combinations of oxidant and chelating agents in infected dentine: an ex vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy study.

AIM: To evaluate the intratubular antimicrobial activity of several oxidant and chelating agents associated with or without surfactants in experimentally infected root canals, using confocal laser scanning microscopy. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-four dentine blocks from bovine incisors were contaminated for 5 days with Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC- 29212). Ten contaminated dentine specimens were irrigated for 5 min with 5.25% NaOCl followed by 17% EDTA for 2 min, and the other 10 with Hypoclean for 5 min followed by Tetraclean NA for 2 min. The remaining four specimens were used as positive and negati

Antileishmanial and cytotoxic activities of ionic surfactants compared to those of miltefosine.

Using the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of spin-labeled stearic acid and a spin label chemically attached to the membrane proteins, the interaction of miltefosine (MIL) and the ionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, anionic), cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC, cationic) and N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (HPS, zwitterionic) with the plasma membrane of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis promastigotes was studied. The spin-label EPR data indicated that the four compounds studied have the ability to increase the molecular dynamics of membrane proteins to a larg

Effect of irrigation with Tetraclean on bacterial leakage of obturated root canals.

The purpose of the study presented here was to evaluate the effect of Tetraclean, Hypoclean, Chlor-XTRA, 2% chlorhexidine and 6% sodium hypochlorite/17% EDTA as a final irrigant on bacterial leakage of the root canal. One hundred and fifty-five extracted human maxillary central incisors were randomly divided into five experimental groups of 25 teeth each and two control groups of 15 teeth each. The root canals in each group were irrigated with 2 ml of the relevant irrigant between each filing. The root canals in group 5 were irrigated with 5 ml of 17% EDTA at the end of root canal preparation.

Developments in nanotechnology approaches for the treatment of solid tumors.

Nanotechnology has revolutionized cancer therapy by introducing advanced drug delivery systems that enhance therapeutic efficacy while reducing adverse effects. By leveraging various nanoparticle platforms-including liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, and inorganic nanoparticles-researchers have improved drug solubility, stability, and bioavailability. Additionally, new nanodevices are being engineered to respond to specific physiological conditions like temperature and pH variations, enabling controlled drug release and optimizing therapeutic outcomes. Beyond drug delivery, nanotechnology pla
