Oral processing effort, appetite and acute energy intake in lean and obese adults.

Chewing reportedly contributes to satiation and satiety signals. Attempts to document and quantify this have led to small and inconsistent effects. The present trial manipulated oral processing effort though required chewing of gums of different hardness and measured appetitive sensations, energy intake, gastric emptying, GI transit time, and concentrations of glucose, insulin, GLP-1, ghrelin and pancreatic polypeptide. Sixty adults classified by sex and BMI (15 each of lean females, obese females, lean males and obese males) were tested in a randomized, controlled, cross-over trial with three

Nicotine-induced osteonecrosis. A case report.

UNLABELLED: This paper describes a previously unpublished side-effect of nicotine replacement chewing gum and presents useful information about the effects of nicotine on the oral environment. It is important to consider this when diagnosing an area of ulceration. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Patients who use nicotine chewing gum should be advised that prolonged contact with the alveolar mucosa should be avoided. They should be told that regular chewing helps dispersal of the nicotine.

Lowering salivary pH with sugar-containing gum augments salivary nitrite production and blood pressure reduction with dietary nitrate (beetroot juice).

AIMS: The nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide (NO) pathway has a wide range of effects including blood pressure (BP) regulation. Nitrate, produced endogenously, and absorbed from dietary sources (e.g., beetroot), is concentrated in/secreted by the salivary glands and reduced by lingual bacterial nitrate reductases to nitrite (the 'enterosalivary circulation'). Following systemic absorption, nitrite is further reduced to vasodilating NO intravascularly. The role of salivary pH in nitrate reduction has mainly been studied in isolated oral installation studies, rather than systemic studies employing the

Volumetric evaluation of temporomandibular joints in patients with a chewing-side preference: a CBCT study.

This study evaluated the influence of chewing-side preference on the volume of the mandibular condyle and coronoid process and the dynamic parameters of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Cone beam computed tomographic scans of both TMJs of 90 individuals with a chewing-side preference were obtained while the patients were in the closed-mouth and maximum mouth-opening positions (test power ≥ 0.80). The preferred chewing side was identified with a chewing gum test as well as by patient self-reports of preferred side and hemispheric dominance (ie, dominant side of the body). Two trained examiner

Diagnosing peri-implant disease using the tongue as a 24/7 detector.

Our ability of screening broad communities for clinically asymptomatic diseases critically drives population health. Sensory chewing gums are presented targeting the tongue as 24/7 detector allowing diagnosis by "anyone, anywhere, anytime". The chewing gum contains peptide sensors consisting of a protease cleavable linker in between a bitter substance and a microparticle. Matrix metalloproteinases in the oral cavity, as upregulated in peri-implant disease, specifically target the protease cleavable linker while chewing the gum, thereby generating bitterness for detection by the tongue. The pep

Maternal smoking and fetal breathing movements.

Pregnant, habitually smoking women were studied during the last trimester when smoking a standard cigarette, smoking a nontobacco cigarette, or chewing a piece of chewing gum containing 2 or 4 mg. of nicotine. The effects of the experimental interventions were followed on the concentration of nicotine and the percentage of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in maternal blood, on the amount and pattern of the fetal breathing movements, and on the maternal heart rate, breathing rate, and blood glucose level. The maternal blood concentration of nicotine was increased by the standard cigarette, the 4 mg. ni

Effect of betel chewing on RR interval variation.

Betel chewing in man often produces palpitations, sweating, facial flushing and a warm sensation in the body. These observations suggest that betel chewing may affect the autonomic nervous system. To examine this, the RR interval variation (RRIV) was studied to determine if betel chewing might affect parasympathetic function. Three experimental groups of people consumed a betel nut preparation, betel quid and chewing gum, respectively. Recordings of RRIV were made before and during chewing. When one or two betel nut preparations were consumed, the main effect was a cardioacceleratory response.

The Factors Affecting Orthodontic Pain with Periodontitis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The occurrence of pain is often closely related to the psychological status, and the threshold for pain tolerance varies from patient to patient. In short, the factors affecting orthodontic pain are diverse and have individual differences. Tooth pain after the first force of intraoral malocclusion orthodontic treatment is one of the common complications of fixed orthodontic treatment, which often affects the outcome of treatment of patients with malocclusion and their subjective satisfaction with fixed orthodontic treatment. The purpose of the paper was to investigate the basic patterns and in
