Social fears during adolescence: is there an increase in distress and avoidance?

Mid-adolescence is considered as the time of onset for social phobia and is assumed to be related to a normative increase of social fears. People diagnosed with social phobia, however, do not only experience high levels of fear or distress, but also report avoidance behavior. Little attention has been paid to the development of avoidance behavior during adolescence. In the current study, a community sample with 9-17 year olds (n=260) completed a questionnaire derived from the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Children (ADIS-C) [Silverman, W. K., & Albano, A. M. (1996). Anxiety disorders

Intergenerational trauma: Parental PTSD and parent-reported child abuse subtypes differentially relate to admission characteristics in the autism inpatient collection.

Autistic youth experience high rates of maltreatment. Little research has considered how distinct abuse dimensions differentially relate to meaningful outcomes, nor taken an intergenerational approach to consider how caregiver trauma and child maltreatment are related. This study sought to identify how parent-reported child abuse subtypes and parent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relate to each other and to admission characteristics upon inpatient service entry. Autistic youth (N = 527; 79% White, 21.3% girls, mean age = 12.94 years) participated in the autism inpatient collection. Paren

Using the child behavior checklist to determine associations between psychosocial aspects and TMD-related pain in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Since children and adolescents are frequently experiencing emotional and behavioral consequences due to pain, their parents should be aware of this emotional and behavioral status. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze and describe the parents' reports of the emotional and behavioral status of children and adolescents with different types of temporomandibular disorders using the Child Behavior Checklist. METHODS: This Cross-sectional study comprises of 386 randomly selected children and adolescents that ages between 10 and 18 years in Jeddah. One day prior the clinical e

Pathways From Parental Substance Use to Child Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors in a Child Protective Services Sample.

This study examines the role of mediation in the pathway from parental substance use to children developing child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Using the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being II, a random half sample (i.e., split-half approach) of children aged 18 months to 17 years who remained in the home following a child welfare investigation (N = 1,633) was used to examine direct and mediated pathways from parental self-reported alcohol and drug use to, separately, parent report of child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Four parallel mediators were exam

Neurology, child.

Child Neurology concerns the study of the human nervous system during its development, as it is affected by conductivity, embryology and neuro-immunological factors in developmental brain disorders, coagulation disorders and the metabolism of nervous tissue. During a neurological examination the differential diagnosis depends on the localization of the symptoms within vision, strength, coordination, reflexes and sensation. Neurological disorders of the central nervous system may represent the cause of some mental illnesses, making hard to discriminate between the field of application proper of

Untreated Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders Among Caregivers With Children Reported to Child Protective Services.

IMPORTANCE: Mental and substance use disorders can interfere with parents' ability to care for their children and are associated with a greater likelihood of child protective services involvement to address child maltreatment. Parent engagement in psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment can prevent child maltreatment and family separations. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether caregivers with psychiatric or substance use disorders whose children were referred to child protective services received Medicaid-funded psychiatric or substance use disorder treatment. Changes in dyadic emotional flexibility and expressivity during parent-child interactions following successful treatment of child anxiety.

Child anxiety is linked to emotions during parent-child interactions, and observing emotional flexibility and expressivity may reveal treatment-related changes. This observational study investigated whether changes in dyadic emotional flexibility and expressivity were associated with treatment non-response (responders vs. non-responders), and whether treatment modality (child vs. family cognitive behavior theory (CBT)) and parent gender (mother- vs. father-child dyads) affected these changes. Participants were 116 referred children with anxiety disorders (59.4% girls, Mage = 12.4 years, SD = 2

Parent-Child Interactions in Context: A Comparison of OCD and Non-clinical Families.

We investigated the context role of family factors in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) by comparing observed parent-child interaction behaviors of OCD and non-clinical families during three parent-child discussion tasks. We examined whether behaviors differentiating groups would be consistent across all discussions, or present only during specific tasks. We also investigated the effect of family-based cognitive behavior therapy on parent-child interactions and aimed to identify interaction behaviors associated with OCD symptom change. Thirty-nine children and adolescents (9-16 years old) an

The challenges for primary caregivers of adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders.

Adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), including oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, present unique challenges for their families. Although, most empirically supported treatments for DBD are family-based, the emphasis is typically on the behavior of the child rather than on the life challenges and resultant distress experienced by the family members. Fifteen families of adolescents with DBD were recruited from a large publicly funded Community Mental Health Center. For this report, data from in-depth interviews with the adolescents' primary caregivers were analyz

The effects of childhood trauma on daily mood lability and comorbid psychopathology in bulimia nervosa.

A study of bulimic women examined the relationship between histories of childhood trauma and psychiatric disorders, as well as daily measures of mood and behavior. One hundred twenty-three women with bulimia nervosa were assessed with interviews and completed an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) protocol in which they carried a palmtop computer for 2 weeks. Sexual abuse was associated with a history of mood and anxiety disorders, and emotional abuse with eating disorder psychopathology. In the EMA assessment, sexual abuse was associated with daily purging frequency and self-destructive beh

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors in psychiatrically referred young children.

Despite increased awareness of the prevalence and seriousness of mental health problems in early childhood, there have been few empirical studies of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in this age group. This study examined suicidal thoughts and behaviors in 360 preschool-aged children (ages 3 to 7 years) presenting to a psychiatric day treatment program. A semi-structured diagnostic interview (conducted with primary caregivers) was used to assess for child suicidal thoughts and behaviors and psychiatric disorders. Participating mothers also reported on their own psychological distress and family

How Caregivers Make Meaning of Child Mental Health Problems: Toward Understanding Caregiver Strain and Help Seeking.

Family caregivers' conceptualizations of their child's emotional and behavioral problems (EBP) influence help-seeking for the child and caregiver strain. We analyzed 21 interviews with caregivers to explore their conceptualizations about the cause of their child's EBP, their experiences of strain, and their reported help-seeking behaviors. Caregivers had divergent conceptualizations of their child's EBP: 12 caregivers viewed the EBP as caused by a disorder and described the onset of symptoms as the central stressful event, whereas 9 caregivers described their child's problems as a response to

An Update on Evidence-Based Psychosocial Treatments for Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Eating disorders are relatively common and serious disorders in adolescents. However, there are few controlled psychosocial intervention studies with this younger population. This review updates a previous Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology review published in 2008. The recommendations in this review were developed after searching the literature including PubMed/Medline and employing the relevant medical subject headings. In addition, the bibliographies of book chapters and treatment guideline articles were reviewed; last, colleagues were asked for suggested additional source

An overview of child physical abuse: developing an integrated parent-child cognitive-behavioral treatment approach.

This article reviews and summarizes the extant literature regarding child physical abuse (CPA). Literature is summarized that describes the wide range of short- and long-term effects of CPA on children as well as the documented characteristics of parents/caregivers who engage in physically abusive parenting practices. Although the reviewed research documents that interventions geared only toward the parent have been found to produce significant improvements with respect to parenting abilities, parent-child interactions, and children's behavior problems, there is a paucity of research examining

Disruptive behavior in preschoolers: associations with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and parental psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavior in preschoolers is considered normative under certain circumstances; however sometimes it may be a sign of both internalizing and externalizing disorders. This study aimed to investigate the associations among children’s disruptive behavior scale scores, child ADHD symptom scores, and parents’ depression, anxiety, and stress scores. METHODS: Participants were recruited from preschools in two central districts of Denizli, Türkiye. We assessed disruptive behavior with the Multidimensional Assessment of Preschool Disruptive Behavior, child ADHD symptoms using the A

Developmental pathways to conduct disorder: implications for future directions in research, assessment, and treatment.

Research has indicated that there are several common pathways through which children and adolescents develop conduct disorder, each with different risk factors and each with different underlying developmental mechanisms leading to the child's aggressive and antisocial behavior. The current article briefly summarizes research on these pathways, including one that onsets in adolescence and seems to be an exaggeration of normal adolescent rebellion against authority. The other two pathways typically involve conduct problems that onset early in childhood but differ on whether the child shows signi

Suicidal ideation and self-injurious behavior in adolescents with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of suicidal thoughts and self-injurious behaviors in patients with eating disorders (ED) is well-known; however, this association is currently not defined empirically. The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation and self-harm in adolescents with eating disorders. A second objective is to study the association between self-injurious behavior and suicidal ideation, severity of eating disorder symptoms and symptoms of depression and anxiety, motivation to change and perfectionism. METHODOLOGY: We evaluated 109 patients (mean age, 14.74 year
