Combined Heart-Liver Transplantation: A First Successful Case in Chile.

Combined heart-liver transplantation (CHLT) is a rare and highly complex procedure reserved for patients with end-stage failure of both organs. We report the first successful CHLT performed in Chile, involving a 55-year-old man with severe dilated cardiomyopathy and chronic liver disease who underwent sequential bicaval heart transplantation followed by piggyback liver transplantation. The postoperative course was complicated by acute neurological deterioration due to an acute subdural hematoma with tentorial extension requiring decompressive craniectomy, after which the patient recovered full

Description of a new Pavlovskyella species (Acari: Argasidae) from Chile.

Soft ticks (Argasidae) of the Pavlovskyella Pospelova-Shtrom subgenus are important vectors of relapsing fever spirochetes, which are agents of disease globally. South American representatives of the Pavlovskyella subgenus include 3 species: Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) brasiliensis Aragão, Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) furcosus Neumann, and Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) rostratus Aragão. Here, we describe a fourth species based on morphological and mitogenomic evidence of ticks collected in burrows of unknown hosts in central Chile. The larva of the new species separates from other South Americ

Monkeypox Virus in Wastewater Samples from Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile.

Sewage surveillance provides useful epidemiologic and public health information on viral infections at the population level. We detected monkeypox virus DNA from sewage samples covering 85% of the population in Santiago Metropolitan Region Chile. We also isolated infective viruses from those samples. Wastewater surveillance could complement clinical surveillance for monkeypox virus.

Detection of antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacterales in insectivorous bats from Chile.

Enterobacterales of clinical importance for humans and domestic animals are now commonly detected among wildlife worldwide. However, few studies have investigated their prevalence among bats, particularly in bat species living near humans. In this study, we assessed the occurrence of Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing (ESBL) and carbapenemase-resistant (CR) Enterobacterales in rectal swabs of bats submitted to the Chilean national rabies surveillance program from 2021 to 2022. From the 307 swabs screened, 47 (15%) harboured cefotaxime-resistant Enterobacterales. Bats carrying these bac

[Report: Epidemiological situation of sexually transmitted infections in Chile, 2017].

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are one of the main causes of acute illness, infertility, long-term disability and death in the world1. This report presents the preliminary epidemiological situation of STIs up to the year 2017 in Chile. Syphilis is the STI with the highest reporting rate, followed by HIV infection. In general terms, all STIs present a relative stabilization of their rates in the 2014 and 2015 periods, except for gonorrhea that shows an increase in these years, which focuses on the group of 15 to 24 years. In 2017, syphilis and HIV infection showed an increase in their r

Swine Influenza Virus (H1N2) Characterization and Transmission in Ferrets, Chile.

Phylogenetic analysis of the influenza hemagglutinin gene (HA) has suggested that commercial pigs in Chile harbor unique human seasonal H1-like influenza viruses, but further information, including characterization of these viruses, was unavailable. We isolated influenza virus (H1N2) from a swine in a backyard production farm in Central Chile and demonstrated that the HA gene was identical to that in a previous report. Its HA and neuraminidase genes were most similar to human H1 and N2 viruses from the early 1990s and internal segments were similar to influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus. The virus re

High intraspecific variability of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto in Chile.

Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto is the major cause of cystic echinococcosis in most human and animal cases in the world and the most widespread species within the E. granulosus sensu lato complex. E. granulosus s.s. remains endemic in South America together with other species of the Echinococcus genus, especially in some areas in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru. Except for a single human case caused by E. canadensis (G6) described in the literature, only E. granulosus s.s. has been found in the Chilean territory. In the current study 1609bp of the cox1 gene from 69 Chilean isolates of

[Immunodiagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis infections in Chile using ELISA test].

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a world wide distributed small intestinal nematode parasite. In immunocompetent individuals S stercoralis can produce asymptomatic infections or a moderate clinical picture of diarrhea, some cases become chronic. In immunocompromised patients, a disseminated disease may appear, sometimes fatal. In Chile, there is little epidemiological information about S stercoralis infections and appropriate diagnostic techniques are usually not used. AIM: To evaluate the yield of an ELISA test for the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis in Chilean patients. MATERIAL AND

Micronuclei analysis in lymphocytes of pesticide sprayers from Concepción, Chile.

To estimate the genetic risk associated with pesticide exposure in a defined population, the frequency of micronuclei (MN) in peripheral blood lymphocytes from a group of 22 pesticide sprayers from Concepción, Chile, occupationally exposed to pesticide mixtures was evaluated. After scoring 1,000 binucleated cells for each donor, no significant increases were observed either for the total number of MN or for binucleated cells with MN, when compared with a concurrent control population. In addition, when the effects of different confounding factors such as age, smoking, and drinking habits were

Morphological diversity of Triatoma infestans across biogeographic zones of Chile.

Triatoma infestans, the primary domiciliary vector of Chagas disease in Chile, has a broad geographic distribution and is characterized by high synanthropy and strong colonization capacity. Landscape characteristics are key factors in understanding population distribution and the processes that shape morphological variation. This study aimed to characterize the structures associated with dispersal and feeding using geometric morphometrics in domiciliary adults of T. infestans (n = 353 total specimens analyzed) along a latitudinal gradient (∼1,255 km). Furthermore, the specimens' localities wer

Antimicrobial Resistance Elements in Coastal Water of Llanquihue Lake, Chile.

Antimicrobial resistance has been stated to be a global health problem. In Chile, the use of antibiotics should be declared by medical prescription, but it is unknown what happens to the drugs once the treatment ends. Among the possibilities for their disposal are the trash or the drain; regardless of which scenario arises, antibiotics could accumulate in the environment, stimulating the emergence of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and their transfer between microorganisms. Unfortunately, sometimes wastewater ends up in bodies of water, due to the dragging of elements by rain, or by the pr
