Purification and Identification of Angiotensin I-Converting Enzyme Inhibitory Peptides and the Antihypertensive Effect of Chlorella sorokiniana Protein Hydrolysates.

Hot water was used to obtain Chlorella sorokiniana hot water extract (HWE). Subsequently, this byproduct was freeze-dried, hydrolysed at 50 °C using Protease N to obtain C. sorokiniana protein hydrolysates (PN-1), and then digested with a gastrointestinal enzyme (PN-1G). The inhibitory effects of the HWE and hydrolysates against angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) were investigated. The soluble protein and peptide contents were 379.9 and 179.7 mg/g, respectively, for HWE and 574.8 and 332.8 mg/g, respectively, for PN-1. The IC50 values of the HWE, PN-1, and PN-1G on ACE were 1.070, 0.035, an

Antagonistic effect of nano-ZnO and cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris: Dissolution and accumulation of nano-ZnO.

The interaction of nanoparticles with coexisting chemicals affects the fate and transport of nanoparticles, as well as their combined effects on aquatic organisms. Here, we evaluated the joint effect of ZnO nanoparticle (nano-ZnO) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris and explored the possible mechanism. Results showed that an antagonistic effect of nano-ZnO and CTAC (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mg L-1) was found because CTAC stop nano-ZnO being broken down into solution zinc ions (Zn2+). In the presence of CTAC, the zinc (including nano-ZnO and released Zn2+) sh

The acclimation of Chlorella to high-level nitrite for potential application in biological NOx removal from industrial flue gases.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the components of fossil flue gas that give rise to the greatest environmental concerns. This study evaluated the ability of the green algae Chlorella to acclimate to high level of NOx and the potential utilization of Chlorella strains in biological NOx removal (DeNOx) from industrial flue gases. Fifteen Chlorella strains were subject to high-level of nitrite (HN, 176.5 mmolL(-1) nitrite) to simulate exposure to high NOx. These strains were subsequently divided into four groups with respect to their ability to tolerate nitrite (excellent, good, fair, and poor). One st

Nutritional Supplementation with Chlorella pyrenoidosa Lowers Serum Methylmalonic Acid in Vegans and Vegetarians with a Suspected Vitamin B₁₂ Deficiency.

Since vitamin B12 occurs in substantial amounts only in foods derived from animals, vegetarians and particularly vegans are at risk of developing deficiencies of this essential vitamin. The chlorella used for this study is a commercially available whole-food supplement, which is believed to contain the physiologically active form of the vitamin. This exploratory open-label study was performed to determine if adding 9 g of Chlorella pyrenoidosa daily could help mitigate a vitamin B12 deficiency in vegetarians and vegans. Seventeen vegan or vegetarian adults (26-57 years of age) with a known vit

Eosin Y enhances bisulfite-driven H2 photoproduction in Chlorella pyrenoidosa by promoting carotenoid-associated photoprotection and preserving PSII activity.

Bisulfite enhances algal H2 photoproduction by scavenging oxygen and establishing hypoxic conditions favorable for hydrogenase (H2ase) activity. However, bisulfite treatment can also increase oxidative stress, impair photosystem II (PSII), and restrict photosynthetic electron supply for H2 production. Here, NaHSO3 treatment of Chlorella pyrenoidosa established hypoxia and increased H2 production approximately fivefold but substantially impaired PSII activity. Co-application of eosin Y alleviated PSII impairment and increased H2 production approximately 30-fold relative to the untreated control

Sustainable treatment of sugarcane vinasse using Chlorella sp. in scalable airlift flat-panel photobioreactors: nutrient removal and biomass valorization.

The global production of sugarcane ethanol generates vast amounts of vinasse, a liquid waste by-product requiring treatment to mitigate environmental impacts. Using vinasse as a feedstock for microalgae cultivation offers a sustainable alternative. This study evaluates the performance of the native strain Chlorella sp. MC18 in internal-loop airlift flat-panel photobioreactors (PBR) for treating industrial raw sugarcane vinasse (SCV) while producing biomass. Cultures were grown in diluted, centrifugation-pretreated SCV (5-25% v/v) as the sole nutrient source, with CO2 supplied by aeration. The

Discovery of a novel nanomolar angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitory peptide with unusual binding mechanisms derived from Chlorella pyrenoidosa.

Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) has been cultivated in large quantities and proven to be antihypertensive when consumed orally. However, the antihypertensive peptides derived from C. pyrenoidosa remains scarce. In this study, trypsin was chosen to prepare the hydrolysate of C. pyrenoidosa, which was then fractionated by column chromatography. And ninety-nine peptides were identified by LC-MS/MS, after which 10 peptides were chosen by docking-based virtual screening and demonstrated their ability to inhibit ACE. Among them, LVAKA (LV-5) had the lowest IC50 (26.66 μM). LV-5, LKKAP, and PG

Expression of mercuric reductase from Bacillus megaterium MB1 in eukaryotic microalga Chlorella sp. DT: an approach for mercury phytoremediation.

A eukaryotic microalga, Chlorella sp. DT, was transformed with the Bacillus megaterium strain MB1 merA gene, encoding mercuric reductase (MerA), which mediates the reduction of Hg2+ to volatile elemental Hg0. The transformed Chlorella cells were selected first by hygromycin B and then by HgCl2. The existence of merA gene in the genomic DNA of transgenic strains was shown by polymerase chain reaction amplification, while the stable integration of merA into genomic DNA of transgenic strains was confirmed by Southern blot analysis. The ability to remove Hg2+ in merA transgenic strains was higher

Cyanide formation from histidine in Chlorella. A general reaction of aromatic amino acids catalyzed by amino acid oxidase systems.

The formation of HCN from D-histidine in Chlorella vulgaris extracts is shown to be due to the combined action of a soluble protein and a particulate component. Either horse-radish peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) or a metal ion with redox properties can be substituted for the particulate component. Ions of manganese and vanadium are especially effective, as are o-phenanthroline complexes of iron. Cobalt ions are less active. The D-amino acid oxidase (EC 1.4.3.3) from kidney and the L-amino acid oxidase (EC 1.4.3.2) from snake venom likewise cause HCN production from histidine when supplemented with t

A study on the combined toxicity assessment of sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline hydrochloride in actual aquaculture wastewater using Chlorella vulgaris and the mechanisms of their removal.

The combined load of tetracycline and sulfonamide antibiotics in aquaculture wastewater poses a potential ecological risk to aquatic ecosystems. Based on actual aquaculture wastewater, this study investigated the combined toxicity of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) to Chlorella vulgaris, as well as the degradation mechanisms and ecological risks of their metabolites. The results indicate that TC-HCl is significantly more toxic to C. vulgaris than SMX, and that the combined use of these two substances produces a synergistic toxic effect. At low concentrations, SMX

Comparative effects of freeze-dried and fresh Chlorella sorokiniana UKM3 and Coelastrella sp. UKM4 on the growth and survival of Daphnia magna.

Hatcheries mainly grow microalgae on-site to produce high-quality live feed for enriching zooplankton in aquaculture systems, predominantly for the larval stages of aquatic species. However, this is often related to high production and maintenance costs. This has driven research into more cost-effective and practical alternatives, such as freeze-dried or paste forms of microalgae. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the potential of two local freshwater microalgae of Chlorella sorokiniana UKM3 and Coelastrella sp. UKM4 as an enrichment diet for zooplankton Daphnia magna.
