Effects of perfluorinated compounds homologues on chemical property, microbial composition, richness and diversity of urban forest soil.

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), as an important class of new persistent organic pollutants, are widely distributed in the environment. Yet the effects of different types and concentrations of PFCs on soil microbial community in urban forest ecosystems are remain uncertain. Here, two typical PFCs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), were selected to carry out a pot experiment in greenhouse with singly and joint treatment at different concentrations, to examine their effects on composition and diversity of soil microorganisms and availability of soil macronut

Waterborne Cr3+ and Cr 6+ exposure disturbed the intestinal microbiota homeostasis in juvenile leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus.

BACKGROUND: Chromium (Cr) mainly has two stable forms: Cr3+ and Cr6+. Cr and its compound are widely used in the printing, dyeing, leather making, and metallurgy industry. They are evitably released into the environment and pose a significant threat to creatures, for instance, the excessive chromium (Cr) burden in the marine ecosystem is often harmful to fish. Intestinal microbiota greatly affects fish performance, but how waterborne Cr affects fish intestinal microbiota is unclear. To test the hypothesis that the waterborne Cr exposure could significantly affect fish' intestinal microbiota ho

Microbial Composition in the Duodenum and Ileum of Yellow Broilers With High and Low Feed Efficiency.

The composition of the gut microbiome plays important roles in digestion, nutrient absorption, and health. Here, we analyzed the microbial composition in the duodenum and ileum of yellow broilers. Chickens were grouped based on feed efficiency (high feed efficiency [HFE] and low feed efficiency [LFE] groups; n = 22 each). Microbial samples from the duodenum and ileum were collected, and 16S rRNA sequencing of the V3-V4 region was performed. The dominant bacteria in the duodenum were from the phyla Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria and the genera Lactobacillus, Faecalibacterium, and Ruminococcus. In

A Preliminary Study of Biliary Microbiota in Patients with Bile Duct Stones or Distal Cholangiocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA) is associated with many factors: genes, environment, infection, etc. The current changes in biliary flora are thought to be involved in the formation of many gastrointestinal tract (GIT) diseases, like colon adenocarcinoma. Therefore we want to investigate whether the dCCA has a certain correlation with biliary microecology, and to detect specific strains. METHODS: A total of 68 adults were enrolled, of whom 8 with dCCA, 16 with recurrent choledocholithiasis, and 44 with the onset of common bile duct stones. Endoscopic Retrograde

Microbial ecology of chlorinated solvent biodegradation.

This study focused on the microbial ecology of tetrachloroethene (PCE) degradation to trichloroethene, cis-1,2-dichloroethene and vinyl chloride to evaluate the relationship between the microbial community and the potential accumulation or degradation of these toxic metabolites. Multiple soil microcosms supplied with different organic substrates were artificially contaminated with PCE. A thymidine analogue, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), was added to the microcosms and incorporated into the DNA of actively replicating cells. We compared the total and active bacterial communities during the 50-day i

Microbial dynamics during and after in situ chemical oxidation of chlorinated solvents.

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) followed by a bioremediation step is increasingly being considered as an effective biphasic technology. Information on the impact of chemical oxidants on organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB), however, is largely lacking. Therefore, we used quantitative PCR (qPCR) to monitor the abundance of OHRB (Dehalococcoides mccartyi, Dehalobacter, Geobacter, and Desulfitobacterium) and reductive dehalogenase genes (rdh; tceA, vcrA, and bvcA) at a field location contaminated with chlorinated solvents prior to and following treatment with sodium persulfate. Kinetics of dechlorination by Dehalococcoides mccartyi using different carbon sources.

Stimulated anaerobic dechlorination is generally considered a valuable step for the remediation of aquifers polluted with chlorinated ethenes (CEs). Correct simulation and prediction of this process in situ, however, require good knowledge of the associated biological reactions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dechlorination reaction in an aquifer contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE) and its daughter products, discharging into the Zenne River. Different carbon sources were used in batch cultures and these were related to the dechlorination reaction, together with the monitored bio

Tetrachloroethene conversion to ethene by a Dehalococcoides-containing enrichment culture from Bitterfeld.

A Dehalococcoides-dominated culture coupling reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE) to ethene to growth was enriched from a European field site for the first time. Microcosms were set up using groundwater from a chlorinated ethene-contaminated anaerobic aquifer in Bitterfeld (Germany). Active, lactate-amended microcosms capable of PCE dechlorination to ethene without the accumulation of intermediates were used for further enrichment. After three transfers on lactate as an electron donor and PCE as an electron acceptor, the enrichment was transferred to parallel cultures with one o

Influence of vitamin B12 and cocultures on the growth of Dehalococcoides isolates in defined medium.

Bacteria belonging to the genus Dehalococcoides play a key role in the complete detoxification of chloroethenes as these organisms are the only microbes known to be capable of dechlorination beyond dichloroethenes to vinyl chloride (VC) and ethene. However, Dehalococcoides strains usually grow slowly with a doubling time of 1 to 2 days and have complex nutritional requirements. Here we describe the growth of Dehalococcoides ethenogenes 195 in a defined mineral salts medium, improved growth of strain 195 when the medium was amended with high concentrations of vitamin B(12), and a strategy for m

Reductive dehalogenase gene expression as a biomarker for physiological activity of Dehalococcoides spp.

This study characterizes the transcriptional expression of the reductive dehalogenase (RDase)-encoding tceA and vcrA genes and evaluates their applicability as potential biological markers of Dehalococcoides activity. When Dehalococcoides ethenogenes 195 was provided with trichloroethene (TCE) as the electron acceptor, the expression of the tceA gene increased by 90-fold relative to that in cells starved of chlorinated ethenes, demonstrating that tceA gene expression is indicative of the active physiological state of this strain. In a Dehalococcoides-containing enrichment culture that contains

Anaerobic bioremediation of groundwater containing a mixture of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and chloroethenes.

This study investigated the biotransformation pathways of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (1,1,2,2-TeCA) in the presence of chloroethenes (i.e. tetrachloroethene, PCE; trichloroethene, TCE) in anaerobic microcosms constructed with subsurface soil and groundwater from a contaminated site. When amended with yeast extract, lactate, butyrate, or H2 and acetate, 1,1,2,2-TeCA was initially dechlorinated via both hydrogenolysis to 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA) (major pathway) and dichloroelimination to dichloroethenes (DCEs) (minor pathway), with both reactions occurring under sulfidogenic conditions.

Enrichment and characterization of a trichloroethene-dechlorinating consortium containing multiple "dehalococcoides" strains.

A microbial consortium that reductively dechlorinates trichloroethene, cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) to ethene with methanogenesis was enriched from chloroethene-contaminated soil from Japan. Dechlorination activity was maintained for over 4 years. Using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis targeting the "Dehalococcoides" 16S rRNA gene, four strains were detected. Their growth and dechlorination activities were classified into two types: one that grows by converting cis-DCE to ethene and the other t

Enhancing humification enzymatic activity and antibiotic resistance gene attenuation in aerobic composting of sewage sludge and food waste: The role of calcium oxide amendment.

Organic municipal solid waste (OMSW) management remains a global challenge, intensifying with rapid urbanization and the widespread use of antibiotics for various purposes. These practices contribute to the dissemination of emerging contaminants, particularly antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Composting is widely applied for OMSW treatment, however the effectiveness of calcium oxide (CaO) amendment in mitigating ARGs and enhancing humification remains limited. This research investigated the effects of CaO amendment at varying levels (T1-0.25 %, T2-0.5 %, and T3-1 % w/w) on humification, enzy

Aging attenuates threat: how moderate aging of microplastics suppresses antibiotic resistance gene proliferation during sludge anaerobic digestion.

Microplastics (MPs) are known to promote antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) dissemination in waste activated sludge; however, most existing evidence is based on unaged MPs, and the influence of aging degree remains poorly understood. This study systematically investigated how varying aging degrees of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) MPs modulate ARG profiles and transfer mechanisms during anaerobic digestion. The results demonstrated a non-monotonic effect of aging degree on ARG proliferation, with moderate aging of MPs showing the strongest attenuation of ARG promotion. Under moderate c

Accelerated ibuprofen removal in soils via bioaugmentation: Insights into the involved microbiomes.

Ibuprofen (IBP), a widely used pharmaceutical compound, is increasingly detected in soils, raising concerns regarding its persistence and potential impacts on microbial communities and crop health. This study evaluated the adsorption, desorption, and biodegradation of IBP in three soils (ALC, CON, ETS) with contrasting agricultural uses, physicochemical and microbiological characteristics, and monitored shifts in microbial communities during bioremediation. Sorption was weak and strongly influenced by soil organic matter. Desorption was substantial in ALC and CON soils (38-50%) but nearly negl

Microbial community succession in response to in-situ coordinated leaching of ion-adsorption rare earth ores.

The stable supply of medium and heavy rare earth elements (M-HREEs) is vital for sustainable development in strategic sectors including permanent magnets, phosphors, and metallurgy. Southern China's ion-adsorption rare earth deposits represent the world's primary M-HREE source. However, the dominant extraction technique, which employs in-situ leaching with ammonium sulfate via an ion-exchange mechanism, has caused severe ammonia-nitrogen pollution in mining regions. To overcome this environmental challenge, our team developed an innovative non-contact bioleaching process based on coordination-

Fe-modified clay minerals enhances iron oxide transformation and microbial ecological succession for simultaneous stabilization of As, Pb, and Cd in smelting soils.

The co-occurrence of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in smelting soils presents major challenges due to their contrasting geochemical behaviors. This study investigates the efficacy of Fe-modified clay minerals (ATP@MG) in simultaneous stabilization of As, Pb, and Cd co-contaminated soil, and revealed the impact on soil bacterial community succession. The results showed that ATP@MG amendment substantially altered soil iron speciation, particularly increasing amorphous (Fe0) by 3.04-fold at a 5% dosage. The TCLP extractable of As, Pb, and Cd decreased by 83.46%, 75.02%, and 18.40%, re

Metagenomics reveals the variations in functional metabolism associated with greenhouse gas emissions during legume-vegetable rotation process.

Legume-based rotation is commonly recognized for its mitigation efficiency of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, variations in GHG emission-associated metabolic functions during the legume-vegetable rotation process remain largely uncharacterized. Accordingly, a soybean-radish rotation field experiment was designed to clarify the responses of microbial communities and their GHG emission-associated functional metabolism through metagenomics. The results showed that the contents of soil organic carbon and total phosphorus significantly decreased during the soybean-radish process (P < 0.05)
