Sox9 expression is not limited to chondroid neoplasms: variable occurrence in other soft tissue and bone tumors with frequent expression by synovial sarcomas.

The transcription factor Sox9 is known to play a crucial role in normal chondrogenesis, and antibodies against Sox9 have been proposed as a diagnostic tool for neoplasms with chondroid differentiation. However, the pattern of Sox9 immunohistochemical expression by other bone and soft tissue neoplasms, as well as its diagnostic specificity, remain unexplored. The authors have performed immunohistochemistry with antibodies against Sox9 in 106 chondroid and nonchondroid bone and soft tissue neoplasms. Moderate to intense Sox9 nuclear staining was observed in 14/20 chondrosarcomas (70%), and in 24

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the hallux following enchondroma.

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is a rare, benign intra osseous lytic lesion occurring especially in gnathis bone but also seen in feet and hands. It has similar clinical and radiological presentations than giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, and hyperparathyroidism brown tumors but with specific histological findings We report a case of a GCRG of hallux phalanx in 18 years old patient appearing many years after enchondroma curettage and grafting. Radiographs showed a multiloculated osteolytic lesions involving whole phalanx with cortical thinning and without fluid-

An intraosseous lipoma of the calcaneus: a case report.

Intraosseous lipomas are one of the rarest bone tumors found in the body. The incidence has been reported to be <0.1% of all primary bone tumors. The differential diagnoses of an intraosseous lipoma in the calcaneus include plantar fasciitis, retrocalcaneal bursitis, gout, stress fracture, unicameral bone cyst, aneurysmal bone cyst, osteoblastoma, enchondroma, chondromyxoid fibroma, nonossifying fibroma, giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma, fibrous dysplasia, and chondrosarcoma. It has been reported that 60% to 70% of patients with an intraosseous lipoma present with symptoms. This article descr

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the calcaneus.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, non-neoplastic, expansile, vascular, locally destructive lesions. The lesion may arise de novo (65%) or secondarily (35%) in pre-existing benign or malignant lesions (giant cell tumor, osteoblastoma, chondroblastoma, angioma, and others). The calcaneus is a rare localization for ABC, comprising only 1.6% of the cases. In this paper, we present a case of a female patient with a 3-month history of heel pain that got worse and was accompanied by swelling and difficulty in walking. The magnetic resonance images of the postero-lateral calcaneus showed a cont

Imaging of the unusual pediatric 'blastomas'.

'Blastomas' are tumors virtually unique to childhood. Controversy surrounds their nomenclature and there is no globally accepted classification. They are thought to arise from immature, primitive tissues that present persistent embryonal elements on histology, affect a younger pediatric population and are usually malignant. The 'commoner' blastomas (neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, medulloblastoma) account for approximately 25% of solid tumors in the pediatric age range. We present examples of the more unusual blastematous pediatric tumors (lipoblastoma, osteoblastoma, chondrobla

Treatment of bone tumours by radiofrequency thermal ablation.

Radiofrequency thermal ablation (RFTA) is considered the treatment of choice for osteoid osteomas, in which it has long been safely used. Other benign conditions (chondroblastoma, osteoblastoma, giant cell tumour, etc.) can also be treated by this technique, which is less invasive than traditional surgical procedures. RFTA ablation is also an option for the palliation of localized, painful osteolytic metastatic and myeloma lesions. The reduction in pain improves the quality of life of patients with cancer, who often have multiple morbidities and a limited life expectancy. In some cases, these

Oncogenic osteomalacia: a clinicopathologic study of 17 bone lesions.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is an unusual and rare clinicopathologic syndrome characterized by mesenchymal tumors that apparently produce osteomalacia and biochemical abnormalities consisting of hypophosphatemia, normocalcemia, and increased levels of alkaline phosphatase. We collected from the Mayo Clinic files and from our consultation files the records for 17 cases of osteomalacia associated with bone lesions. There were five cases of fibrous dysplasia, three of hemangiopericytoma, and two of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor. There was one case each of osteosarcoma, chondroblastoma, chondromyxoid

[Intraosseous osteolytic lesions. Diagnostic, differential diagnosis and therapy (author's transl)].

Any pathological damage occurring in a bone will produce either an osteolytic or osteosclerotic lesion which can be seen in the macroscopic specimen as well as in the roentgenogram. Various bone lesions may lead to local destructions of the bone. An osteoma or osteoplastic osteosarcoma produces an osteosclerotic lesion showing a dense mass in the roentgenogram; a chondroblastoma or an osteoclastoma, on the other had, induces an osteolytic focal lesion. This paper presents examples of different osteolytic lesions of the humerus. An osteolytic lesion seen in the roentgenogram may be either produ

Aneurysmal bone cyst. A review of 123 cases including primary lesions and those secondary to other bone pathology.

A group of 639 bone lesions was reviewed in order to study the features of the aneurysmal bone cyst and its association with other conditions. A diagnosis of primary aneurysmal bone cyst not associated with any other bone lesion was made in 87 patients. In 36 additional patients the gross and microscopic changes of aneurysmal bone cyst were identified as part of some other solid bone lesion. Fourteen of these additional cases were associated with giant cell tumor (96 cases studied), six with chondroblastoma (41 cases studied), three with chondromyxoid fibroma (45 cases studied), two with nonos

Occipital neuralgia and twelfth nerve palsy from a chondromyxoid fibroma.

The purpose of this case report is to record the unusual combination of occipital neuralgia and hypoglossal nerve palsy causing dysarthria, dysphagia, and unilateral weakness of tongue protrusion, with no other neurological findings. The cause was a discrete tumor in the clivus and the right occipital condyle. Following surgical resection of the tumor, dysarthria and dysphagia persisted. These improved with therapy by a speech therapist, but deviation of the tongue persisted on protrusion. No similar case reports were found in the literature. In addition, the tumor was an unusual one, a chondr

Cystic Lymphangioma in the Talus Bone: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Lymphangiomas, predominantly observed in pediatric populations, can occasionally be acquired in adulthood. They are rare benign tumors mostly found in the head and neck region, with solitary cystic lymphangioma in bone being very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an uncommon case of a solitary cystic lymphangioma in the talus bone of a 19-year-old Chinese female presented with a history of enduring ankle swelling, rest pain, and frequent sprains. The patient's T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) revealed a cystic bone lesion with multiple internal fluid levels, which ini

[Value and limitations of computerized tomography in the study of benign tumors of the bone].

In order to stress the role of CT in the evaluation of benign tumors of the bone the authors studied by means of a high-resolution CT scanner 74 patients that later underwent surgery (70 cases) and histological examination (all cases). CT findings were compared with the surgical and histological data. The results prove that the diagnostic contributions of CT are less important in the evaluation of benign than in malignant bone tumors. The major contributions of CT were:--the capability of detecting the presence of osteoid osteoma not found by means of conventional radiographic techniques;--dif

Surface chondromyxoid fibroma of the distal ulna: unusual tumor, site, and age.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare benign cartilage congener tumor comprising less than 1 % of primary bone tumors. Although the age range is wide, it is most commonly seen in the second and third decades. The most frequent location of CMF is in the long tubular bones of the lower extremities, particularly the proximal tibia and distal femur. Although the majority of chondromyxoid fibromas present as intramedullary tumors, a subgroup of chondromyxoid fibromas arising as surface lesions of the bone has recently been described. These are associated with an older mean age and an increased inci

Cytologic features of primary chondroid tumors of bone in crush preparations.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy can be utilized effectively in the diagnosis of many bone lesions. Often, these lesions are suspected to be foci of metastatic disease based on clinical and/or radiographic findings. On occasion, microscopic examination of the aspirate yields a diagnosis of a primary neoplasm of chondroid origin. We discuss the cytologic features observed in crush preparations of the most frequently seen primary chondroid tumors of bone and how these lesions can be differentiated from each other and from metastatic lesions.

Breast metastasis in osteosarcoma.

A young girl with a history of chondroblastic osteosarcoma of the tibia developed a pulmonary metastasis which was treated by metastasectomy, chemotherapy and lung irradiation. There years later, at the age of 15, she developed a breast mass which was excised and which proved to be a poorly differentiated sarcoma. This was almost certainly a metastasis rather than a radiation-induced second primary tumour, in view of the short interval since radiotherapy. The ultrasonographic features of this lesion are presented here and the differential diagnosis is discussed in this context.
