PURPOSE: The aims of present study are to clarify the follow questions: 1) what constitutes paediatric chondrosarcoma?; 2) what are the effects of the demographic and tumour characteristics on survival in patients with paediatric chondrosarcoma?; 3) which prognostic factors of paediatric chondrosarcoma differ from those of the adult population, which have been reported previously?
METHODS: Paediatric patients who were diagnosed with chondrosarcoma were searched for using the case listing session protocol of the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 databas

We present a case of an 88-year-old man with high-grade chondrosarcoma of the larynx. The patient presents with a history worsening dysphonia and dyspnoea treated with antibiotic and corticosteroid therapy as it was a bronchopneumonia. Thanks to fibrolaryngoscopy, radiological imaging and final biopsy with immunohistochemistry, we have done differential diagnosis with the others sarcomas of the larynx. The histological diagnosis and the correct grading are essential for treatment and management of the pathology. The best treatment is primary surgical resection with negative margins. Chemoradio

BACKGROUND: Primary intracranial chondrosarcoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor of the central nervous system, which accounts for <0.16% of all primary intracranial tumors. This rare tumor has a high associated morbidity from the tumor itself as well as from treatment modalities.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 33-year-old man presented with a diffuse headache of 3 months' duration. He was admitted to our department with weakness in the right extremities that had persisted for more than a month. Findings of the neurologic examination revealed right hemiparesis. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging dem

Whilst the malignant transformation of nasal polyps or secondary development of nasal neoplasia after chronic inflammation is likely to be relatively rare, this potential complication should be considered, and the clinician should be vigilant for evidence of malignant transformation.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgical resection via open approaches is considered the main treatment modality for cranial base chondrosarcomas (CBCs). The use of endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEAs) has been rarely reported.
OBJECTIVE: To present the endoscopic endonasal experience with CBCs at our institution.
METHODS: Retrospective review of the medical records of 35 consecutive patients who underwent EEA for CBC resection between January 2004 and April 2013. Surgical outcomes and variables that might affect extent of resection, complications, and recurrence were analyzed.
RESULTS: Forty-eight oper

Secondary tumours of the thyroid gland account for 1.25 to 3 % in clinical series and reach 24 % in autopsy series. Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumour of chondrogenic nature; the mesenchymal variant represents less than 3 % of all chondrosarcomas, being therefore extremely rare. A mesenchymal chondrosarcoma metastasis in the thyroid is exceptional; to our knowledge, only three previous cases of chondrosarcoma metastasis in the thyroid have been reported to date but none of such cases corresponded to a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. We present the first of such a case in a 27-ye

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas are a rare variant of primary chondrosarcomas and can pose a diagnostic dilemma, especially when the features on conventional imaging are equivocal for an aggressive lesion. There is very little PET-CT experience in mesenchymal chondrosarcomas as per the literature and to the best of our knowledge, we are the first to describe a maxillary mesenchymal chondrosarcoma on PET-CT imaging. We report a case where PET-CT not only complemented conventional imaging in suspecting a malignant osseous lesion, but also was indicative of the grade of the tumor.

Constitutive COL2A1 mutations are associated with a wide variety of clinical manifestations known as type II collagenopathies. Among them is Kniest dysplasia, which is phenotypically variable and includes both skeletal (short trunk and limbs, kyphoscoliosis, prominent joints, and osteoarthritis) and craniofacial characteristics. Kniest dysplasia mutations primarily arise in the triple-helicoidal region of the alpha 1 (II) chain in COL2A1 between exons 12 and 24. Somatic COL2A1 mutations have been identified in chondrosarcoma, a rare cartilage forming neoplasm, with a hypermutability of the gen

AIMS: Chondrosarcoma is primarily a tumour of adulthood and old age. Some studies indicate that survival is worse in paediatric than in adult chondrosarcomas. In view of the rarity of paediatric chondrosarcoma, few large studies are currently available.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated the clinical, radiological and pathological features of a single institution series of chondrosarcomas presenting in patients younger than 17 years between 1981 and 2014. Seventeen patients with central (10), peripheral (five) and periosteal (two) chondrosarcoma were retrieved. The patients received various tr

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma (CS) is a very rare entity. It is usually seen in 50-80-year olds. It is developed from cricoid cartilage largely. Patients have laryngeal CS complaint of respiratuvar distress, dysphonia, and dysphagia generally. A submucous mass is usually seen in physical examination with an intact mucosa. Distant metastasis is rare in CSs. Main treatment is surgical excision. An 82-year-old patient who has respiratuvar distress is presented in this paper and laryngeal CS is reviewed in the light of the literature.

Chondrosarcoma of the head and neck is uncommon and reported to constitute between 1% to 12% of all chondrosarcoma cases.1, 2, 3 Extraskeletal chondrosarcoma of the tongue is an extremely rare type of neoplasm with only three previously reported cases. The underlying origin of chondrosarcoma arising in the tongue is controversial. We describe a case of a low-grade chondrosarcoma arising in the base of the tongue of a 54-year-old woman with a central area of dedifferentiation. The patient was treated with complete surgical resection with no evidence of recurrence at 1 year follow-up.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor in which the tumor cells produce cartilage but not bone. The recommended management is wide local or radical excision, followed by surgical and prosthetic reconstruction. This article explains postsurgical prosthetic rehabilitation of a chondrosarcoma patient by means of intraoral acrylic, and extraoral silicone prosthesis for restoration of normal orofacial function and appearance.

Chondrosarcoma of the larynx is a rare condition of still unknown pathogenesis. This tumor occurs usually between the sixth and seventh decade of life. Forty five years old patient was admitted to the ENT Department in Zabrze for a diagnosis of a slow growing tumor from about 3 years. The great unmovable tumor 2.5 cm/3 cm/3 cm was arising from the cricoid cartilage. The hist-pat result of the biopsy was cartilage. The patient did not agree on the proposed surgical treatment. After one year, in the MRI examination, the tumor sized 46 mm/37 mm/39 mm was found. The patient was again qualified for

Intracranial chondrosarcomas are cartilaginous tumours that are extremely rare with an estimated incidence of less than 0.16% of all intracranial neoplasms. They arise from the skull base synchondrosis or exceptionally from cartilaginous rests within the dura mater. This kind of tumours presents clinical features mimicking meningiomas, with symptoms secondary to mass effect (increased intracranial pressure, local brain dysfunction, cranial nerve palsies) and seizures. Intracranial chondrosarcomas are more frequently seen between 3 months and 76 years of age, with a peak around the third decade

This article reports a rare case of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) chondrosarcoma in a child. Chondrosarcoma is a malignant cartilaginous neoplasm that resembles synovial chondromatosis. In the head and neck region, chondrosarcoma is uncommon, corresponding to 6.4% to 12% of all reported cases. The majority of patients with chondrosarcoma are in the third to fourth decades of life. A Pubmed search showed that 20 TMJ chondrosarcoma cases had been reported up to 2008. The present case was of an 11-year-old girl referred to an Oral Disease Center and presenting with a preauricular swelling on th

We report a primary intradural mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the spine in a 3-year-old girl. MRI revealed a markedly enhancing oval mass associated with focal areas of low signal intensity extending from T11 to L1. The lesion was located posterolateral to the right side of the spinal cord, pushing the conus medullaris and cauda equina anteriorly and to the left. The adjacent spinal cord also showed serpiginous areas of flow void. The mass was completely removed. Microscopic examination and immunohistochemical studies confirmed the diagnosis of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. The patient was free o

We describe a 43-year-old woman with grade 1 chondrosarcoma of the cervical spine who developed neuropathic arthropathy. Plain radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine revealed a so-called dumbbell tumor. We suggest that this tumor was responsible for the development of neuropathic arthropathy in bilateral hip joints, the left shoulder joint, and the left first metacarpophalangeal joint. This is the first reported case of neuropathic arthropathy secondary to chondrosarcoma of the cervical spine.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to present a new approach for the diagnosis and treatment of chondrosarcoma involving the cricoid cartilage. The technique involved an extramucosal resection of the ipsilateral half of the involved cricoid cartilage, providing enough tissue to be sent for pathological study, and resulted in good laryngeal function without jeopardizing patients' long-term survival.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
METHODS: A retrospective study of eight patients who underwent hemicricoidectomy for cricoid chondrosarcoma was performed at the Center for Voice Disorders

A 63-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of a large, firm tumor in the upper region of the anterior chest wall. The tumor measured 8 x 10 cm in diameter. A diagnosis of chondrosarcoma of the sternum was made cytologically from a percutaneous fine needle aspiration biopsy. The primary tumor was completely resected, but the sternum, ribs and clavicles were only partially resected. Another tumor was detected five months after resection and metastasis to the brain was recognized in December 2000. The patient, now suffering headaches and vomiting due to the intracranial hemorrhage aro

OBJECTIVE: To report 12 cases of chondrosarcoma in a rare location, the short tubular bones of the hands and feet, as well as 12 cases of enchondroma in similar locations, emphasizing the radiologic and histopathologic features.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: All relevant cases that had both histologic slides and radiographs available were taken from the files of one orthopedic referral hospital and the personal files of one of the authors. A similar number of enchondroma cases was selected at random from the files.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: One malignancy arose in a background of enchondromatosis, wit
