Choroid-plexus-derived Otx2 homeoprotein constrains adult cortical plasticity.

Brain plasticity is often restricted to critical periods in early life. Here, we show that a key regulator of this process in the visual cortex, Otx2 homeoprotein, is synthesized and secreted globally from the choroid plexus. Consequently, Otx2 is maintained in selected GABA cells unexpectedly throughout the mature forebrain. Genetic disruption of choroid-expressed Otx2 impacts these distant circuits and in the primary visual cortex reopens binocular plasticity to restore vision in amblyopic mice. The potential to regulate adult cortical plasticity through the choroid plexus underscores the im

Choroid plexus tumors: an institutional series of 25 patients.

PURPOSE: Choroid plexus tumors (CPT) are rare neoplasms that pose considerable treatment challenges. This study reviews a single institute's experience with 25 patients of CPT and attempts to contribute to the general body of knowledge on CPT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the case records of 25 patients operated for CPT since January 1998 and having a minimum of 1 year follow-up. RESULTS: The study group included 12 (48%) cases of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP), 09 (36%) cases of choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) and 4 cases of atypical CPP. The mean age at presentation wa

Ectopic choroid plexus associated with trigeminal neuralgia: case report.

INTRODUCTION: A 55-year-old man underwent a microvascular decompression procedure for a pharmacoresistant trigeminal neuralgia. Preoperative MRI showed a neurovascular conflict between the Vth nerve root and the superior cerebellar artery. METHODS: Dissection of the intracisternal trigeminal root was undertaken, and a piece of Teflon was positioned between the artery and the nerve. RESULTS: Choroid plexus was found squeezing the root entry zone of the Vth nerve and partially removed. The patient did not improve after the vascular decompression procedure. Trigeminal neuralgia could be due to

Intramedullary ectopic choroid plexus: report of a rare case.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Intracranial cysts containing an ectopic choroid plexus or choroid plexus-like tissue have seldom been described in the literature. However, there has been no report of a spinal intramedullary cyst containing an ectopic choroid plexus. This is the first case report in the available literature of an ectopic choroid plexus tissue in the spinal cord. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old man presented with complaints of progressive descending weakness of both upper limbs and increasing stiffness of the lower limbs along with numbness of all four limbs without a history o

Choroid plexus tumors: a review of 28-year experience.

The aims of the study were to review the patients with choroid plexus tumor (CPT) treated in Slovenia between 1972-1999, to calculate the incidence of CPTs, and to evaluate treatment results in respect to tumor histology and mode of therapy. Cancer Registry of Slovenia database was used for patientś identification. Histological specimens and medical records were reviewed. Twelve patients (7 females, 5 males), 0.8-43 years old (median 6.1 years; <15 years: 10/12,83%) with CPT, representing 0.36% of all intracranial tumors registered during the period under study, were identified. [Choroid plexus tumours: epidemiologic comparative study of 24 cases].

Tumours derived from choroid plexus are rare central nervous system neoplasms affecting mainly children. This study presents a series of 38 patients with neuroectodermal tumours. Twenty four of them had the histological and/or immunohistochemical diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC). Sixteen of these patients were male. The left lateral ventricle was affected in most cases. Main clinical features were: hydrocephalus, intracranial hypertension and convulsion. All the patients were treated by surgery. There were 2 deaths due to surgical complications. Nine patients had recurrence, dying i

Choroid plexus carcinoma in the lateral ventricle--case report.

A 68-year-old male presented with choroid plexus carcinoma in the left lateral ventricle manifesting as dysarthria and gait disturbance. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a homogeneously enhanced mass in the trigone of the left lateral ventricle. Selective left posterior cerebral arteriography showed the tumor was fed by the left medial posterior choroidal artery. Detailed examinations found no evidence of an extraneural primary focus. He underwent partial removal of the tumor followed by local Lineac irradiation (50 Gy). After irradiation, the serum level of carcinoembryonic antigen decreased

[Papilloma of the choroid plexus. Apropos of 11 cases].

The authors report 11 cases of choroid plexus papillomas in children operated on from 1979 until 1993. The age ranges from 2 months to 14 years old. The most frequent location occurred in the lateral ventricles (7 cases) followed by the locations in the third ventricle (3 cases) and the fourth ventricle (1 case). A complete resection was performed in all the cases. Hydrocephalus induced by the tumors was always present. An internal and permanent shunting procedure was carried out in the pre-operative period in 5 cases, in the post-operative course in 1 case. 3 cases underwent an external CSF s

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the choroid plexus in Sjögren's disease.

We report an unusual case of inflammatory pseudotumor of the choroid plexus of the right lateral ventricle, manifesting as an intraventricular mass and causing unilateral hydrocephalus in a 48-year-old man who suffered from Sjögren's disease and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The lesion obliterated the normal choroidal architecture by a mixed chronic inflammatory process that was associated with reactive connective tissue changes. Immunohistochemical studies showed no light-chain restriction in the cells, and residual islands of transthyretin-positive epithelial cells were identified,

Choroid plexus tumours in children. Review of 24 cases.

24 cases of choroid plexus tumours (16 papillomas and 8 carcinomas) were observed in the Department of Paediatric Neurosurgery, Hôpital des Enfants de la Timone, Marseille France between 1975 and 1989. The case records were reviewed and the clinical, surgical, and pathological results are presented here. 14 (58%) were infants and 10 (42%) of these were aged less than 1 year at presentation. In 11 (46%) the tumour arose in the lateral ventricle, in 7 (29%) it was located in the IIId ventricle, and in 6 (25%) the tumour was found in the IVth ventricle. 5 of the 8 carcinomas had their origin in t

The clinical significance of prenatally diagnosed choroid plexus cysts.

The choroid plexus cyst is one of many malformations of the central nervous system that can be detected in utero by ultrasonography. Choroid plexus cysts occur in 2.3% of fetuses. Because previous reports have shown an association between choroid plexus cysts and chromosomal anomalies, we analyzed 82 prenatally diagnosed cases, 65 of whom had chromosome analysis performed. Of the group, 6.2% had chromosomal anomalies of the trisomy 18 type. The remaining 17 cases were clinically normal at birth. These cases of trisomy 18 were also associated with multiple structural anomalies. Therefore, we su

Leukotriene C4 transport by the choroid plexus in vitro.

Nanomolar concentrations of peptidoleukotrienes evoke sustained cerebral edema and arterial constriction. Peptidoleukotrienes are thus considered to play an important role in eliciting cerebral edema after cerebral ischemia and vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. It was hypothesized that the choroid plexus, the locus of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, might minimize the vasoactivity of locally generated or systemically derived leukotrienes by transporting leukotrienes from cerebrospinal fluid into the blood. Consistent with this hypothesis, leukotriene C4 in vitro was transported i

[Arteriovenous malformations of the choroid plexus--a case report].

The authors described a case of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the choroid plexus, and presented a review of literature. This 40-year-old male experienced a sudden onset of severe headache and vomiting on February 5th 1982. At the other hospital, CT scans revealed marked intraventricular hemorrhage, however his general condition was relatively good without a loss of consciousness, motor weakness and sensory disturbance. After about a month of conservative treatment, he was transferred to the Kochi Medical School Hospital. On admission, he had shown no neurological deficit except for sligh

[Carcinomas and malignant papillomas of choroid plexus (author's transl)].

Carcinomas and malignant papillomas of choroid plexus occur more frequently in children and are mostly localized in lateral ventricles. Their clinical picture corresponds to that of plexus papillomas. The histological diagnosis is based upon unmistakeable criteria of malignancy in a tumour deriving from choroid plexus. Five such cases have been studied; in three of them the increase of malignancy was proved by the investigation of recurrences. One case was investigated electronmicroscopically.

A pigmented choroid plexus carcinoma: histochemical and ultrastructural studies.

A large tumor of the left lateral ventricle in a 3 1/2 year old male was diagnostic of malignant choroid plexus papilloma (choroid plexus carcinoma) as observed histologically. Focal neoplastic epithelial cells contained yellow-brown pigment which was not entirely compatible with melanin by histochemical techniques. Ultrastructurally, the tumor had definite evidence of choroid plexus origin. The neoplastic cells contained electron-dense and lamellar bodies, as well as structures of intermediate type. Premelanosomes were not observed. Thus there was no evidence for neural crest melanin. It is s

[The ultrastructural study of choroid plexus papillomas (author's transl)].

Four cases of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) obtained at the time of surgical excision were examined by light and electron microscopy and compared with normal choroid plexus (CP) of mouse and chick. Ultrastructurally CPPs were the same as CP except in the following two points: In CCPs 1) pinocytotic vesicles of the vascular endothelium and 2) cytoplasmic filaments were more increased in number than in CP. In one case, which showed malignant changes in some parts, we found prominently increased spot desmosomes and cytoplasmic filaments as compared with other three cases, microcysts at the apica

Choroid plexus papilloma. I. Proof of cerebrospinal fluid overproduction.

Utilizing a ventricular perfusion technique, the rate of CSF formation was determined in a 2-year-old child before and after removal of a 74 g choroid plexus papilloma from the left lateral ventricle. Preoperatively, the CSF formation rate was 1.05 +/- SD 0.01 ml/min (1,656 ml/day). Postoperatively, the CSF formation rate was reduced fivefold to 0.20 +/- SD 0.01 ml/min (288 ml/day). Whereas these data are regarded as conclusive evidence of CSF overproduction by a choroid plexus papilloma, the pathogenesis of generalized ventricular enlargement in this case was due to part to obstruction of the
