Impact of graded doses of enrofloxacin on the safety and biological responses of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.

The cultivation of tilapias, the third most farmed fish group globally, has been rapidly growing, especially in Southeast Asia. This surge in tilapia farming intensification has led to increased use of antibiotics to control bacterial diseases. This study investigated the safety implications of administering graded doses of enrofloxacin (ENF) at 0 (control), 10, 30, 50 and 100 mg/kg biomass/day orally to Oreochromis niloticus. The 43-day study comprised 7 days of pre-dosing, 15 days of ENF-dosing, and a 21-day recovery period with a periodical assessment of the biological responses of fish. Th

Usefulness of the pancreas as a prime target for histopathological diagnosis of Tilapia parvovirus (TiPV) infection in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus.

Tilapia parvovirus (TiPV) is an emerging virus reportedly associated with disease and mortality in farmed tilapia. Although previous descriptions of histopathological changes are available, the lesions reported in these are not pathognomonic. Here, we report Cowdry type A inclusion bodies (CAIB) in the pancreas as a diagnostic histopathological feature found in adult Nile tilapia naturally infected with TiPV. This type of inclusion body has been well-known as a histopathological landmark for the diagnosis of other parvoviral infections in shrimp and terrestrial species. Interestingly, this les

"Unraveling the Gut Microbiome of the Genus Herichthys (Pisces: Cichlidae): What Can We Learn from Museum Specimens?".

The use of museum preserved specimens to know microbiome in extinct and threatened species has been explored recently. The fishes of the genus Herichthys are distributed mainly in the Pánuco-Tamesí system in Northeastern Mexico, one of the most polluted basins in the country leading to near half of the species be considering as threatened. In this paper we used the hypervariable V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene from the 11 species of the genus Herichthys obtained from museum collections to evaluate the potential use of fixed preserved vouchers in the knowledge of gut microbiota diversity and the

All-male production in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) through discrete anastrozole immersion: hormonal and histological insights.

Generating all-male cohorts of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is commercially essential in modern aquaculture, as males exhibit substantially faster growth rates than females. Although oral delivery of the synthetic androgen 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) has long been the prevailing industry method for sex reversal, a range of practical and environmental shortcomings have fuelled the search for alternative strategies. The present study evaluated whether brief, repeated bath immersions in anastrozole, a third-generation, non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor, could reliably induce male sex reve

Performance of collagen-based matrices from Nile tilapia skin: A pilot proteomic study in a murine model of wound healing.

Full-thickness cutaneous trauma, due to the lack of dermis, leads to difficulty in epithelialization by keratinocytes, developing a fibrotic scar, with less elasticity than the original skin, which may have disorders in predisposed individuals, resulting in hypertrophic scar and keloids. Biomedical materials have excellent characteristics, such as good biocompatibility and low immunogenicity, which can temporarily replace traditional materials used as primary dressings. In this work, we developed two dermal matrices based on Nile tilapia collagen, with (M_GAG) and without (M) glycosaminoglycan

Fipronil impairs the GABAergic brain responses of Nile Tilapia during the transition from normoxia to acute hypoxia.

γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is one of the main neurotransmitters involved in the adaptation processes against the damage that hypoxia can cause to the brain. Due to its antagonist action on GABA receptors, the insecticide fipronil can turn the fish more susceptible to the negative effects of hypoxia. This study aimed to understand better if fipronil affects these GABAergic responses of Tilapia ahead to hypoxia. Oreochromis Niloticus (Nile Tilapia) were exposed for 3 and 8 h to fipronil (0.0, 0.1, and 0.5 µg.L-1 ) under normoxia (dissolved O2  > 6 mg.L-1 ) and moderate hypoxia (dissolved O2  < 2

Expression and purification of S5196-272 and S6200-317 proteins from Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) and their potential use as vaccines.

Tilapia Lake Virus Disease (TiLVD) is caused by Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV), and it has a cumulative mortality rate of up to 90% in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). TiLV is a negative enveloped single-stranded RNA virus with 10 genomic segments. Segment 5 (S5) and segment 6 (S6) were predicted to include a signaling peptide, suggesting that the encoded proteins of these two segments may exist as part of the virus envelope.
