Cerebral Metabolic Changes Related to Oxidative Metabolism in a Model of Bacterial Meningitis Induced by Lipopolysaccharide.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral mitochondrial dysfunction is prominent in the pathophysiology of severe bacterial meningitis. In the present study, we hypothesize that the metabolic changes seen after intracisternal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection in a piglet model of meningitis is compatible with mitochondrial dysfunction and resembles the metabolic patterns seen in patients with bacterial meningitis. METHODS: Eight pigs received LPS injection in cisterna magna, and four pigs received NaCl in cisterna magna as a control. Biochemical variables related to energy metabolism were monitored by intracereb

Infusion of cytosine-arabinoside into the cerebrospinal fluid of the rat brain inhibits the microglial cell proliferation after hypoglossal nerve injury.

The present study describes a method to inhibit selectively the microglial cell proliferation following peripheral nerve injury. Continuous infusion of cytosine-arabinoside (ARA-C) from an osmotic minipump to the fourth ventricle or cisterna magna completely blocks the proliferation of microglial cells that normally occurs following hypoglossal nerve transection. This treatment had no significant effect on other glial cells or on the expected morphological changes in the axotomized hypoglossal motorneurons. The method opens up new possibilities for analyzing the functional role of the axotomy-

Tecto-cerebellar dysraphia with occipital encephalocele.

We report four cases with the rare syndrome of tecto-cerebellar dysraphia with occipital encephalocele. The clinical features seen in these patients included episodic tachypnea and irregular breathing, opsoclonus, ataxia, marked hypotonia of the limbs, coloboma, and polydactyly. All four patients had midline occipital encephalocele. The cranial computed tomography scan showed partial to total agenesis of the vermis with a large communication between cisterna magna and the fourth ventricle. The computed tomography scan also showed partial deficiency of the midbrain tectum. We discuss the clinic

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy caused by a novel ACAD9 mutation: a case report.

Background A 27-year-old male with perinatal hypoxia presented with global developmental delay, progressive hearing loss, ataxia, dysarthria, and intellectual disability. Whole-exome sequencing revealed compound heterozygous ACAD9 variants: c.456del (p.Ile153Serfs*46) and c.869G > A (p.Gly290Glu). Brain MRI showed bilateral cerebellar atrophy and a prominent cisterna magna. OCT confirmed optic atrophy. The diagnosis of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy (complex I deficiency type 20) was established. This report expands the known genetic spectrum associated with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy an

MRI and multiplanar 3D ultrasound compared in the prenatal assessment of enlarged posterior fossa.

Our aim was to compare the diagnostic capabilities of the multiplanar mode of 3D ultrasound (3D US) and MRI in the assessment of a fetal enlarged cisterna magna. Two fetuses showing an enlarged posterior fossa by conventional two-dimensional ultrasound at 24 and 29 weeks of pregnancy were assessed using both diagnostic methods. One fetus was found to have Dandy-Walker syndrome malformation. In the other, the syndrome was ruled out using both methods. Our results suggest that multiplanar 3D US is able to achieve similar results as does MRI when observing the fetal brain.

Cerebral vasospasm model produced by subarachnoid blood injection in dogs.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was simulated in dogs by injecting blood into the cisterna magna. Time-dependent development of spasm of the basilar artery was angiographically determined. One week after SAH, the diameter of the basilar artery decreased by 15.5 +/- 5.4% and 46.4 +/- 3.0% in the single and double injection model, respectively. Thereafter, the artery diameter gradually returned to normal. The time course of diameter changes in the double injection model resembles that seen in the clinical setting, and the double injection model seems to be useful for the experimental study of cere

Changes of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like immunoreactivity in cerebrovascular nerve fibers after subarachnoid hemorrhage: an experimental study in the dog.

A model of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was experimentally produced in the dog by a single injection of fresh autologous arterial blood into the cisterna magna, and then changes of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like immunoreactivity (VIP-LI) in perivascular nerve fibers were examined immunohistochemically in the proximal portions of the middle cerebral artery. Perivascular nerve fibers with VIP-LI were markedly decreased in number during the 1st week after SAH. However, they were gradually reincreased during the 2nd to 9th week after SAH to be recovered to the normal level on the 63rd day

Intracranial neurosarcoidosis.

Neuroradiological findings in two cases of histologically confirmed intracranial sarcoidosis are presented, one with periaqueductal granulomata causing aqueduct obstruction. The granulomatous aggregation was of slightly greater attenuation than normal brain parenchyma and did enhance homogeneously following contrast medium administration. No direct signs of basal arachnoiditis could be found on computed tomography (CT) in the other case in which hydrocephalus was produced by a granulomatous infiltration of the fourth ventricle and cisterna magna. The neuropathological and pertinent clinical an

Persistent dural cerebrospinal fluid leak shown by retrograde radionuclide myelography: case report.

Following inadvertent spinal anesthesia for delivery, a patient developed incapacitating post-lumbar puncture headache that persisted for 9 weeks. Scintigrams of the lumbar region, obtained after injection of 99mTC-human serum albumin into the cisterna magna, showed the cerebrospinal fluid leak. Blood patch repair was carried out, with immediate relief of all symptoms. Because of subsequent atypical headaches, a second cisternogram was done by the same technique. This study confirmed that there was no further dural leak, and other evidence indicated that the recurrent headache was related to f

[Cerebral anatomy on computerised tomograms (author's transl)].

An attempt has been made to show which anatomical structures of the skull and brain can be demonstrated by analysing 668 computerised tomograms of normal brains. Many parts of the bony skull, the cisterns and ventricles and physiological calcification of the pineal body, choroid plexus and falx can be clearly identified. Frequently it is possible to distinguish between grey and white matter in the basal ganglia. After intravenous contrast injection it is sometimes possible to identify arteries and other pathways and vascular structures by their increased contrast. Because of the constant topog

Prevention of cerebral vasospasm by vasodilatory peptide maxadilan following subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbits.

Maxadilan is a vasodilatory peptide isolated from the blood-feeding sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis. Its vasodilatory activity, estimated by the formation of erythema on rabbit skin, is greater than those of calcitonin gene-related peptide, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and pituitary adenylyl cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP). We have recently demonstrated that maxadilan is a specific agonist for the PACAP type I receptor, which is widely distributed in brain. Therefore, we were interested in the vasodilatory effect of maxadilan on cerebral arteries and the possibility of its clinical

[Growth activity of meningeal carcinomatosis--immunohistochemical study using anti-BrdU monoclonal antibody].

We have developed an experimental model of leptomeningeal tumor by inoculating Walker 256 carcinosarcoma cells into the cisterna magna of rats. This model was considered to be useful in studying pathophysiology and treatment of malignant brain tumors. In this study, the growth kinetics of this experimental tumor was investigated by using the immunohistochemical technique with an anti-BrdU monoclonal antibody. Walker 256 carcinosarcoma was subcutaneously passaged in female Wistar rats. Seven days after subcutaneous inoculation, the tumor was aseptically removed and minced in Hank's medium by sc

Electron microscopy of simian cerebral arteries after subarachnoid hemorrhage and after the injection of horseradish peroxidase.

A large unilateral subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was created in 21 monkeys, and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into the cisterna magna or left internal carotid artery in 3 others (normals). Cerebral fixation was performed on Day 14 after SAH or 15 minutes after HRP injection. The major cerebral arteries from both the nonclot (control) and clot sides and the normal animals were examined with scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). SEM of the adventitial surfaces of control and normal arteries revealed tunnel-like structures along the longitudinal axis. No vasa va

Description of endoscopic ventricular anatomy in myelomeningocele.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work is to present our endoscopic neuroanatomical findings of a series of myelomeningocele and hydrocephalus patients, treated with endoscopic third ventricular cisternostomy (ETVC), in order to describe ventricular configuration abnormalities in this group of patients, in which this neurosurgical procedure has limited performance. METHOD: We checked the videos of 10 endoscopic third ventricular cisternostomies of myelomeningocele patients taken during 24 months as from December 1998. A previous guideline is designed to record anatomic variables in the lateral v

[Contribution of axial computer assisted tomography to the diagnosis of aresorptive hydrocephalus].

In a comparative study, 18 patients presenting with progressive mental deterioration were investigated by means of radio-isotopic cisternography and by computerized axial tomography (CAT) in order to establish morphological criteria for CAT which would enable malresorptive hydrocephalus and atrophic hydrocephalus to be differentiated. Except for one case, malresorptive hydrocephalus was characterized by supraand infratentorial ventricular dilatation without any signs of cortical atrophy of the convexity. In most cases, ventricular dilatation was more important in cases of malresorptive hydroce
