Developing a Video Game as an Awareness and Research Tool Based on SARS-CoV-2 Epidemiological Dynamics and Motivational Perspectives.

In mid-2020, the University of Liège (ULiège, Belgium) commissioned the ULiège Video Game Research Laboratory (Liège Game Lab) and the AR/VR Lab of the HEC-Management School of ULiège to create a serious game to raise awareness of preventive measures for its university community. This project has its origins in two objectives of the institutional policy of ULiège in response to the crisis caused by SARS-CoV-2 to raise awareness among community members of various preventive actions that can reduce the spread of the virus and to inform about the emergence and progression of a pandemic. After alm

Safer Roads to School.

Any and all advances made by medical science cannot solve the problem of road traffic injuries (RTIs) in school-going children, especially if the only concerned people are those of the medical fraternity. Children are a vulnerable part of the traveling population and thus have been persistent due to the callous nature of the citizens and policy makers toward road safety and injury prevention. In our multicultural and multilingual country, there is a need for multistakeholder initiative with a countrywide presence if we are to stem the rise of mortality and morbidity due to these accidents. Using artificial intelligence in vector control: A new path for public health.

Vector-borne diseases remain a pressing global health challenge exacerbated by climate change, urbanization, and insecticide resistance. This review evaluates how artificial intelligence (AI) can strengthen vector surveillance, forecast outbreaks, and optimize interventions in public-health programs. Traditional control strategies rely on reactive. AI-driven systems, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs, a form of image-recognition AI) and advanced machine learning models, achieve over 90% accuracy in real-time mosquito species identification, enabling targeted responses to invasive vec

Does Fermentation Enhance Beverage Safety? Kombucha's Resistance to Microbial Invasion Suggests a Protective Role.

Does fermentation enhance the safety of beverages? This study investigates kombucha's resilience to microbial invasion from human hands. Kombucha, an ancient fermented tea, relies on a biofilm known as a symbiotic community of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) and a starter culture to ferment sweet tea, producing various metabolites including gluconic acid, acetic acid, ethanol, and carbon dioxide. While fermented foods have been historically associated with potential health benefits, direct evidence comparing the prevalence of human pathogens in fermented versus non-fermented beverages has been lack

Are Orienteers Protected Enough against Tick Bites? Estimating Human Exposure to Tick Bites through a Participative Science Survey during an Orienteering Competition.

Mass-participation events in temperate forests are now well-established features of outdoor activities and represent high-risk activities regarding human exposition to tick bites. In this study we used a citizen science approach to quantify the space-time frequency of tick bites and undetected tick bites among orienteers that participated in a 6-day orienteering competition that took place in July 2018 in the forests of Eastern France, and we looked at the use and efficacy of different preventive behaviors. Our study confirms that orienteers are a high-risk population for tick bites, with 62.4

[Psychiatry and the assessment of human destructiveness: on the question of drawing the line between the "normal" concept of evil and psychiatric illnesses].

Every culture in this world demands that its members comply with a few basic rules: Respect for and maintenance of the health and life of others are recognised as worldwide ethical norms just as much as consideration for the economic basis of existence of others. When these are exceeded, they are punished in all social systems. If there is no severe mental disturbance, the responsibility for a crime or for socially damaging or non-conformist behaviour lies with the individual himself. The question, whether a person could have acted differently in a defined situation on the basis of his persona

The making of public health emergencies: West Nile virus in New York City.

In this article we use the case of the West Nile virus (WNV) to investigate the social construction of public health emergencies (PHEs) and the subsequent changes in public health governance that they instigate. Informed by medical sociological literature on the social construction of illness, science and technology studies, and risk and disaster literature, we create a conceptual framework for connecting health and crisis. Our investigation of the WNV analyses PHEs as brief, but vitally important, moments in which a 'crisis' is co-constructed between states, affected populations and disease v

Dilemmas of a vitalizing vaccine market: lessons from the MMR vaccine/autism debate.

A number of issues related to vaccines and vaccinations in society are discussed in this paper. Our purpose is to merge an analysis of some recent changes in the vaccine market with social science research on the relationship between citizens and authorities. The article has two empirical parts. The first shows how the vaccine market, which for many years has had immense financial problems, nowadays seems to becoming economically vitalized, mostly due to the production of new and profitable vaccines. However prosperous the future may appear, certain reactions from the public regarding vaccinat

Clinical Presentation and Pathological Effects of a Hydrozoan Bloom on Farmed Atlantic Salmon.

Largely unpredictable, gelatinous plankton blooms are a growing concern for the ever-expanding mariculture industry. Recently, a bloom of a colonial hydrozoan known as Apolemia sp. was detected via a citizen-science initiative, Nye.dugnadforhavet.no, in mid-Norway in July 2023. By November 2023, the bloom spanned the entire 2500 km Norwegian coast, adversely impacting the aquaculture industry nationwide. This report describes the clinical presentation and pathology on farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) caused by an unprecedented bloom of Apolemia sp. at the Austevoll station of the Institute

Private and well drinking water are reservoirs for antimicrobial resistant bacteria.

Water quality testing does not recognise antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and is often limited to indicators of faecal contamination Escherichia coli and Enterococcus species. In Europe, data on AMR in drinking water is scarce. In Ireland, as in many countries, household drinking water is supplied via mains or via private wells or water schemes. Using citizen science, we identified Irish private drinking water supplies as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB). Gram-negative (n = 464) and Gram-positive (n = 72) bacteria were isolated. We identified instances of potentially opportun

Two Faces of the Screened Bottom Boards-An Ambiguous Influence on the Honey Bee Winter Colony Loss Rate.

We conducted a citizen science survey on the winter honey bee colony losses in Poland from 2017/18 to 2019/20 to determine the influence of the use of screened bottom boards on the winter colony losses due to various causes. A total of 1035 beekeepers with 40,003 colonies reported valid data. The overall winter colony loss rate ranged from 10.7% to 13.9%, and in every year, the overall winter colony loss rate was higher than 10% (which is considered as acceptable in Poland). The study reveals that the use of screened bottom boards was associated with reduced overall loss rate. However, the nat

Leveraging Peptaibol Biosynthetic Promiscuity for Next-Generation Antiplasmodial Therapeutics.

Malaria remains a worldwide threat, afflicting over 200 million people each year. The emergence of drug resistance against existing therapeutics threatens to destabilize global efforts aimed at controlling Plasmodium spp. parasites, which is expected to leave vast portions of humanity unprotected against the disease. To address this need, systematic testing of a fungal natural product extract library assembled through the University of Oklahoma Citizen Science Soil Collection Program has generated an initial set of bioactive extracts that exhibit potent antiplasmodial activity (EC50 < 0.30 μg/

Using meta-quality to assess the utility of volunteered geographic information for science.

BACKGROUND: Volunteered geographic information (VGI) has strong potential to be increasingly valuable to scientists in collaboration with non-scientists. The abundance of mobile phones and other wireless forms of communication open up significant opportunities for the public to get involved in scientific research. As these devices and activities become more abundant, questions of uncertainty and error in volunteer data are emerging as critical components for using volunteer-sourced spatial data. METHODS: Here we present a methodology for using VGI and assessing its sensitivity to three types

[Level of information of students at the University of Regensburg concerning organ donation and transplantation--informed or not informed consent in organ donation?].

BACKGROUND: As a result of the actual amendment of the German transplantation law, every citizen will be regularly asked by health insurance companies about his attitude towards post-mortem organ donation--without the obligation to decide. The aim is to increase the willingness of donations as well as the availability of organs. Therefore, we investigated the level of information of students at the University of Regensburg and their agreement to organ transplantation regarding an informed consent. METHODS: Using an interdisciplinary developed questionnaire (Medicine, Theology, Educational Sci

Evaluating spatial and temporal patterns of tick exposure in the United States using community science data submitted through a smartphone application.

Research initiatives that engage the public (i.e., community science or citizen science) increasingly provide insights into tick exposures in the United States. However, these data have important caveats, particularly with respect to reported travel history and tick identification. Here, we assessed whether a smartphone application, The Tick App, provides reliable and novel insights into tick exposures across three domains - travel history, broad spatial and temporal patterns of species-specific encounters, and tick identification. During 2019-2021, we received 11,424 tick encounter submission

A brief report of the status of self-medication with over-the-counter drugs: a pilot cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVE: The extent of perceived knowledge and usage status regarding over-the-counter (OTC) drugs among Japanese citizens remains unclear. This study aims to assess OTC drug use through a pilot cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: Conducted on April 30, 2023, at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Osaka University, the survey garnered 180 valid responses. Among these, 76.1% were female and 56.1% aged 16-19 years. Over the past year, 70.6% used OTC drugs, and price (60.0%), effectiveness (50.0%), and ingredients (43.3%) were the top three factors focused on during OTC drug selection

Teaching students to effectively evaluate scientific evidence and advocate for research in the context of autism spectrum disorder and the neurodiversity movement.

Connecting socially relevant topics with biological content can boost student engagement and comprehension. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an increasingly prevalent diagnosis with a number of intersecting topic areas between developmental biology and social justice. Here I describe two exercises that I developed to engage students in learning opportunities that link scientific process learning goals with real-world applications. First, students examine scientific research practices and work on connecting scientific evidence with conclusions by evaluating the retracted 1998 article by Andrew

A novel "five-in-one" comprehensive medical care framework for rehabilitation and nursing.

With the evolution of society, the world has entered a moderate stage of aging. Not surprisingly, the aging problem in the world is getting more intense, resulting in the increasing demand for higher-quality and well-organized medical and elderly care services. To cope with that, many researchers have dedicated themselves to advancing the medical care system based on data or platforms. However, they have ignored the life cycle, health service and management and the inevitable shift of living scenarios for the elderly. Therefore, the study aims to improve health conditions and enhance senior ci

The Spatial Distribution of Dermacentor Ticks (Ixodidae) in Germany-Evidence of a Continuing Spread of Dermacentor reticulatus.

In Europe, two tick species of the genus Dermacentor occur, Dermacentor marginatus and Dermacentor reticulatus. When the spatial distribution of both species in Germany was studied comprehensively for the first time in 1976, D. marginatus populations were recorded along the Rhine and Main river valleys in southwestern Germany, while D. reticulatus was very rare. In the last 50 years, however, a considerable range expansion of D. reticulatus has been noted in several European countries. To assess the current distribution of Dermacentor spp. in Germany, citizens were asked to send in ticks suspe
