Geographical drivers and climate-linked dynamics of Lassa fever in Nigeria.

Lassa fever is a longstanding public health concern in West Africa. Recent molecular studies have confirmed the fundamental role of the rodent host (Mastomys natalensis) in driving human infections, but control and prevention efforts remain hampered by a limited baseline understanding of the disease's true incidence, geographical distribution and underlying drivers. Here, we show that Lassa fever occurrence and incidence is influenced by climate, poverty, agriculture and urbanisation factors. However, heterogeneous reporting processes and diagnostic laboratory access also appear to be importan

[Impact of global climate changes on arboviruses transmitted to humans by mosquitoes and ticks].

Global warming [+0.5-0.6 degree C during the second half of the 20th century] seems a reality although climatologists did not reach a common agreement on its actual origin, and this phenomenon may still increase along the 21st century [+1.5 to 6 degrees C]. Epidemiologists are anxious at the eventual effects of the resulting climate change on the evolution of arbovirus infections transmitted to human beings by hematophagous vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks. Analysis of the literature devoted to this problem did not lead to precise conclusions and the mathematical models used seems insuffic

Interactive effects of solar UV radiation and climate change on biogeochemical cycling.

This report assesses research on the interactions of UV radiation (280-400 nm) and global climate change with global biogeochemical cycles at the Earth's surface. The effects of UV-B (280-315 nm), which are dependent on the stratospheric ozone layer, on biogeochemical cycles are often linked to concurrent exposure to UV-A radiation (315-400 nm), which is influenced by global climate change. These interactions involving UV radiation (the combination of UV-B and UV-A) are central to the prediction and evaluation of future Earth environmental conditions. There is increasing evidence that elevated

Outbreak of acute fasciolosis in sheep farms in a Mediterranean area arising as a possible consequence of climate change.

The objective of the present study was to investigate whether climate change in recent years have influenced the onset of acute outbreaks of Fasciola hepatica in ovine farms in southern Italy. In May-June 2014, a severe outbreak of F. hepatica occurred in three sheep farms in the Campania region. Clinical, coprological and necroscopic examinations were performed. Morbidity and mortality due to F. hepatica were 3-67% and 3-50%, respectively. Coprological examinations showed high values of F. hepatica eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces (860-1,240). Similarly, high adult parasitic burdens were found i

CT Examination of Nose and Paranasal Sinuses of Egyptian Mummies and Three Distinct Human Population Groups: Anthropological and Clinical Implications.

The interaction of nasal morphology and climatic conditions has resulted in diverse hard- and soft-tissue configurations across human population groups. While the processes of skull pneumatization are not fully understood, the invasions of the paranasal sinuses [PNS] into the cranium have contributed to assorted morphologies. Human migratory patterns and the strong association with climatic variables through time and space may explain this diversity. This study examined four multiregional populations of which two are from Egypt but of widely divergent eras. Three Egyptian mummies [EG-M] from t

Explaining the Links Between School Administrator Leadership, Job Satisfaction, and Participatory School Climate: A Machine Learning-Enhanced Multilevel Analysis of TALIS 2024 School Administrator Data.

A participatory school climate refers to the involvement of school administrators, teachers, and other school members in decision-making processes, their sharing of responsibility, and their collaborative work for school improvement. Since this climate can be related to individual, organizational, and contextual factors such as leadership, job satisfaction, diversity beliefs, workload, well-being, and national context, identifying the key variables that support a participatory school environment is important. This study used TALIS 2024 school administrator data to identify the main predictors

Barnyard millet (Echinochloa species): an underutilized nutritional powerhouse with emerging nutraceutical benefits.

The impact of climate change presents an opportunity for orphan crops like millet to contribute to sustainable food systems. A prime example of an orphan crop with special traits and the potential to develop climate-smart agriculture is Barnyard millet (BYM). Alkaloids, steroids, polysaccharides, glycosides, tannins, phenols, dietary lignans and flavonoids are just a few of the antioxidants that are abundant in BYM. BYM's antioxidant potential, prebiotic status, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antibacterial and anticancerous properties help it to combat a myriad of diseases. The antinutrition

Environmental variation is related to morphotype differentiation in a Brunfelsia (Solanaceae) complex.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study combines morphological and environmental data to better understand a Brunfelsia (Solanaceae) species complex, aiming to clarify patterns of variation and identify ecological factors that shape morphotype boundaries. Such an approach provides a broader perspective on how organisms respond to environmental gradients and contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of biodiversity. METHODS: We analyzed 254 herbarium specimens for 13 morphological traits using univariate and ordination analyses. Climatic and edaphic variables were extracted for all specimens w

Genomic insights into gene flow and local adaptation among three Taxus species.

Local adaptation refers to the evolutionary process whereby organisms become better suited to their local environmental conditions, resulting in higher fitness. However, patterns of gene flow among Taxus species and their capacity for local adaptation across current and future climatic landscapes remains unclear. Here, we analyzed dd-RAD sequencing data from 252 individuals from three Taxus species to identify their genetic structure and gene flow patterns, identify climate-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the genome, and predict their spatio-temporal shifts under futur

Effect of Climate Warming on Culex Mosquito Population Dynamics in Newfoundland.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of infectious diseases affecting humans and animals. In North America, Culex mosquitoes transmit West Nile virus and other arboviruses, while their persistence in temperate regions depends strongly on seasonal processes such as diapause. Temperature, rainfall, and photoperiod jointly regulate mosquito development, survival, reproduction, and seasonal activity, yet many climate-driven models do not explicitly represent diapause or interacting environmental drivers. We develop a mechanistic, stage-structured model for temperate Culex populations that includes egg

Seabirds and native vegetation drive ecosystem processes that support atoll island resilience.

Ecosystem restoration is expected to enhance ecosystem resilience to climate change, but few empirical and mechanistic demonstrations of such assertions exist. Here, we explore this topic for tropical atoll systems, combining science on nutrient subsidies and geo-ecological functions through a unifying ecological energetics lens. We show that native forest cover and seabird nutrient inputs increase primary productivity and secondary metabolism on islands and adjacent coral reefs, scaling with key ecosystem processes. We then demonstrate that seabird and native forest restoration could contribu

Climate network reveals cross-seasonal teleconnections between heatwaves and cold waves.

Climate change is reshaping the global pattern of extremes, driving more frequent heatwaves, synchronous events, and compound hazards. This complexity renders the analysis and prediction of extreme events-such as heatwaves and cold waves-no longer confined to regional or weather-scale processes, as their interactions may trigger cascading and multiscale impacts. Using a complex network framework applied to global reanalysis data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (1981-2020), we identify robust cross-seasonal teleconnections

Understanding Climate Change Threats to Vertebrate Wildlife by Studying Ecoimmunology Across Biological Scales.

Climate change threatens organismal health and ecological stability in myriad ways, the impacts of which are often difficult to characterize given their complex and interacting nature. To facilitate comparisons across taxa and ecosystems, we discuss the importance of a cross-scale approach to better characterize the ways in which climate change processes threaten wildlife immunity. Centering available examples from the vertebrate wildlife literature, we supplement with examples from the livestock literature to illustrate ways in which abiotic stress impacts immunity from molecular to community

Building climate-resilient health systems for the displaced: health information systems and the statistical invisibility of climate-related mobility in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is reshaping the populations health systems serve, yet health information systems (HIS) remain blind to one of the fastest-growing groups: people displaced or migrating in the context of climate change. In sub-Saharan Africa this mobility is now counted at scale, but mobility data and health data systems have developed as parallel infrastructures blind to each other's populations. OBJECTIVE: To examine the health of populations moving in the context of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa, and to argue that a principal obstacle to climate-resilient health policy is

A robust multiple-objective decision-making paradigm based on the water-energy-food security nexus under changing climate uncertainties.

From the perspective of the water-energy-food (WEF) security nexus, sustainable water-related infrastructure may hinge on multi-dimensional decision-making, which is subject to some level of uncertainties imposed by internal or external sources such as climate change. It is important to note that the impact of this phenomenon is not solely limited to the changing behavior patterns of hydro-climatic variables since it can also affect the other pillars of the WEF nexus both directly and indirectly. Failing to address these issues can be costly, especially for those projects with long-lasting eco

The potential impact of climate change on the transmission risk of tick-borne encephalitis in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Impact of climate change on tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) prevalence in the tick-host enzootic cycle in a given region depends on how the region-specific climate change patterns influence tick population development processes and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) transmission dynamics involving both systemic and co-feeding transmission routes. Predicting the transmission risk of TBEV in the enzootic cycle with projected climate conditions is essential for planning public health interventions including vaccination programs to mitigate the TBE incidence in the inhabitants and trav

An advanced modeling study on the impacts and atmospheric implications of multiphase dimethyl sulfide chemistry.

Oceans dominate emissions of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), the major natural sulfur source. DMS is important for the formation of non-sea salt sulfate (nss-SO42-) aerosols and secondary particulate matter over oceans and thus, significantly influence global climate. The mechanism of DMS oxidation has accordingly been investigated in several different model studies in the past. However, these studies had restricted oxidation mechanisms that mostly underrepresented important aqueous-phase chemical processes. These neglected but highly effective processes strongly impact direct product yields of DMS ox
