Epidemiological Surveillance of Intestinal Parasites and Serological Analysis of Toxoplasma gondii in Captive Felids From Thailand Zoos.

Background: Wild felids have been in decline, which has been linked to health issues. Parasitic infections, including zoonotic ones, can contribute to the challenges faced regarding wildlife conservation efforts and may pose a risk to human health, particularly for people working at or visiting zoological parks. This study investigated the occurrence of parasitic infections in the Felidae within Thai zoo parks. Methods: The fecal samples were collected from 93 Felidae individuals residing in four zoo parks. The parasitological technique involved sugar floatation, and a formalin-ethyl acetate c

The influence of colostrum-derived maternal cells on neonatal lamb immune responses to routine management practices.

Colostrum is essential for newborn ruminants because it delivers vital nutrients, boosts immune function, and promotes growth. Studies suggest that maternal cells found in colostrum enhance the immune development of newborns, resulting in lasting health benefits. This study examines the impact of maternal colostral cells on lamb growth and husbandry-related mucosal health challenges. Initial assessments of ovine colostrum samples (n = 9) identified an effective method for removing maternal cells from colostrum. This method was utilized in an ewe-twin lamb model across two lambing seasons durin

Prevalence and risk factors for gastrointestinal parasites in small-scale pig enterprises in Central and Eastern Uganda.

In Eastern Africa, small-scale pig keeping has emerged as a popular activity to generate additional household income. Infections of pigs with gastrointestinal helminths can limit production output, increase production costs, and pose zoonotic risks. A cross-sectional, community-based study in three districts in Eastern and Central Uganda examined the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminthes and associated risk factors in 932 randomly sampled pigs. Using the combined sedimentation-flotation method, 61.4 % (58.2-64.5 %, 95 % confidence interval [CI]) tested positive for one or more gastrointest

Curcuma as a parasiticidal agent: a review.

Members of the Curcuma plant species (Zingiberaceae) have been used for centuries in cooking, cosmetics, staining and in traditional medicine as "omnipotent" remedies. Herbal preparations made with, and molecules extracted from, Curcuma have been shown to possess a wide variety of pharmacological properties against malignant proliferation, hormonal disorders, inflammation, and parasitosis among other conditions. This review evaluates Curcuma and its associated bioactive compounds, particularly focusing on studies examining the parasiticidal activity of these components against the tropical par

Prevalence of cryptosporidium species in paediatric patients in Eastern Nepal.

Cryptosporidium species have been implicated as an important cause of childhood diarrhoea. We determined the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in HIV seronegative children 15 years of age and below presenting with diarrhoea in the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal. Faeces were collected over a 12-month period. Coccidian oocysts were detected using modified acid-fast staining. Intestinal parasites were found in 9.15% of diarrhoeal stool. Coccidian parasites were observed in 4.4% (with 4.1% cryptosporidium and two cyclospora). Coccidia were the most recurrent parasite found in this st

Polyphyletic origin, intracellular invasion, and meiotic genes in the putatively asexual agamococcidians (Apicomplexa incertae sedis).

Agamococcidians are enigmatic and poorly studied parasites of marine invertebrates with unexplored diversity and unclear relationships to other sporozoans such as the human pathogens Plasmodium and Toxoplasma. It is believed that agamococcidians are not capable of sexual reproduction, which is essential for life cycle completion in all well studied parasitic apicomplexans. Here, we describe three new species of agamococcidians belonging to the genus Rhytidocystis. We examined their cell morphology and ultrastructure, resolved their phylogenetic position by using near-complete rRNA operon seque

Indirect immunofluorescent detection of oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum in the feces of naturally infected raccoons (Procyon lotor).

Fecal samples from 100 wild raccoons were examined for the presence of oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum using a commercially available indirect immunofluorescent detection procedure. Thirteen (13%) of the samples were positive for oocysts. All positive samples were from juvenile raccoons. Over 61% of the infected samples contained moderate to large numbers of oocysts. Raccoons may serve as potential reservoirs for transmission of C. parvum.

Infectivity of Cryptosporidium sp isolated from wild mice for calves and mice.

A study was conducted to determine the incidence of cryptosporidiosis in wild mice (Mus musculus) and the infectivity of oocysts from their feces for susceptible calves. The presence of oocysts and the duration of shedding of oocysts in the feces were evaluated in 115 wild mice. Approximately 30% of the mice shed Cryptosporidium sp oocysts, without evidence of clinical infection; recurrence of oocyst shedding was found in about 50% of the mice. Oocysts from the feces of naturally infected mice were infective for calves and mice. Calves began shedding oocysts at 7 days and shed oocysts for abou

[Cryptosporidiosis. II. Biological diagnosis].

The biological diagnosis of human cryptosporidiosis is made primarily by identifying Cryptosporidium oocysts in stool specimens under the microscope. It is advisable to fix and stain the fecal smears by the technique according to Henriksen. It is possible to examine fresh specimens and to carry out concentration techniques but this requires excellent knowledge of the cytology of the parasite. Cryptosporidium can also be identified from intestinal biopsies.

Cryptosporidiosis in man: parasite life cycle and fine structural pathology.

The Cryptosporidium here described is a very small (3-4 micron) opportunistic pathogenic coccidian parasite. Through seven known human enteric infections it is now associated with diarrhoea in immunosuppressed or immunodeficient individuals. Neither the full pathogenic potential nor the complete life cycle of this parasite are known, and there is no adequate chemotherapeutic agent with which to eradicate it. What is known of its intracellular intestinal forms and the fine structural changes occurring in parasitised epithelial cells has been described. A viral complication of the infection is d

Spontaneous cryptosporidiosis in an adult female rabbit.

An asymptomatic adult female rabbit had intestinal cryptosporidiosis. The ileum had blunted villi, a decrease in villus-crypt ratio and a mild edema in the lamina propria. Transmission electron microscopy showed the parasite to be a Cryptosporidium similar to those reported in mouse, guinea pig, lamb, calf, horse, monkey and man. This organism is referred to as Cryptosporidium cuniculus. Scanning electron microscopy on ileal mucosa showed altered intestinal microvilli in the attachment of the cryptosporidia. It is postulated that the organism was enveloped by the microvilli of the ileal epithe

An enzyme immunoassay for detecting Cryptosporidium in faecal and environmental samples.

An enzyme immunoassay (EIA) with a monoclonal antibody to cryptosporidium oocysts was developed and evaluated for the examination of faecal and environmental samples. The EIA was as sensitive as microscopy for detecting Cryptosporidium but also produced some positive results which could not be confirmed by a modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique or by immunofluorescence microscopy. These specimens reacted also with heterologous antibodies in EIA, suggesting false positive results.

Subclinical cryptosporidiosis of turkeys in Iowa.

Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in the feces of 16 of 20 (80%) 17-day-old and 38 of 100 (38%) 24-day-old turkeys in a healthy commercial flock in central Iowa. Mean dimensions of 50 oocysts were 4.5 x 5.3 micron. In experimentally inoculated turkeys and chickens, the parasites frequently infected the ceca, colon, and cloaca, but rarely infected the small intestine or bursa of Fabricius. These data differ from published descriptions of Cryptosporidium baileyi in chickens and turkeys. The results indicate that the cryptosporidia of poultry are not a homogeneous group and demonstrate that Cryp
