The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in effective communication between parents and children with cochlear implants when the parents attended a modified Hanen training course (Watson 1995). The study demonstrates that the course led to improvement in the effectiveness of the parent-child interaction, as rated by naïve independent observers. The Erber rating scale (Erber et al. 1995) was implemented as a tool for evaluating changes before and after the courses. Using video samples taken at the above intervals, the ratings showed a significant increase in effective communicati

Cochlear implants and multichannel auditory brainstem implants enable patients with bilateral total or profound hearing loss to receive at least acoustic information. Both types of prosthesis are based on electrical stimulation of the auditory pathway. Different speech coding strategies and the number of electrodes used may influence the postoperative results. The preoperative evaluation of patients is of utmost importance. The cochlear implant is suitable for patients with hearing loss due to inner ear disorders, but who have functioning hearing nerve. Patients with a defect of the hearing ne

Labyrinthitis ossificans may complicate the insertion of a multichannel cochlear implant in patients deafened after meningitis. Two children who initially underwent partial insertion of a 22-channel cochlear implant because of severe cochlear ossification required revision surgery after several months of unsuccessful device use. At the time of revision, resection of the car canal, tympanic membrane, malleus, and incus provided access to the lateral wall of the cochlea, permitting extensive drilling of the basal turn and a circumodiolar placement of the electrode. Functional integrity of the el

Cochlear implants have changed the rehabilitation of profoundly hearing-impaired patients. A wide range of performance is reported for postlingually deaf adult patients using multichannel (Nucleus and Inerad) cochlear implants. For the 63 patients described here, performance ranges from 0 to 62% correct word recognition, from 0 to 98% lipreading enhancement measured as a percentage of the possible enhancement, and from 0 to 98% on understanding words in sentences. Prelingually deaf children also show benefit from their cochlear implants, but they require more time to obtain benefit than postli

The method employed in conventional rehabilitation programmes after cochlear implantation is described in detail. A cochlear implant is expected to provide a better acoustic speech discrimination by recognition of prosodic speech elements, such as rhythm, stress, intonation and rudimentary discrimination of phonemes. Furthermore we need to know about the influence of the new auditory control on speech and voice of the deaf. These changes are regularly documented by logopaedic examinations and phonetically adjusted tests. The indication of cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf and in child

PURPOSE: Intraword variability designates the phenomenon that a particular target word is produced variably by a child at one point in the child's development. In this study, the amount of intraword variability is studied longitudinally in children with auditory brainstem implants (ABIs). Auditory brainstem implantation is a relative recent technique in pediatric hearing restoration. Therefore, little is known about the phonological development of these children's speech.
METHOD: The intraword variability is investigated in three children with ABI, in comparison to children with cochlear impl

OBJECTIVES: We compared the perceptual auditory abilities of 21 children with suspected cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) and a surgically verified absent cochlear nerve (CN) who first underwent cochlear implantation (CI) and subsequently underwent auditory brainstem implantation (ABI).
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, from 2000 to 2011, 21 children initially underwent CI at an outside institution and failed to progress in their perceptual auditory abilities. Before CI, all of the children had severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss and a diagnosis of CND. Magnetic resonance i

INTRODUCTION: Many factors are associated with cochlear implant (CI) outcomes and various methods of assessment for auditory and speech performance outcomes in CI are available globally. The objective of this study is to identify factors relating to CI outcomes in paediatric population that suits local context.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 18 factors consisted of variables which emphasise on audiological, CI service team, speech therapy, and family-related factors. These factors were then retrospectively analyzed among CI recipients. The outcome measurements of categorical auditory perfo

OBJECTIVE: Characterize hearing loss (HL) after hearing preservation cochlear implantation and determine the association between high charge electrical stimulation (ES) and late loss of acoustic hearing.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of all hearing preservation implantees at our center (n = 42) assayed HL as a function of maximum charge. We analyzed serial audiometry from 85 patients enrolled in the multicenter Hybrid S8 trial to detail the hearing loss greater than 1 month after implantation. Cochleotypic explant cultures were used to assess susceptibility to high levels of ES.

Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss seriously affects the communication and cognitive ability of the patients. Cochlear implantation (CI) is currently the most effective treatment, while it may damage the remaining inner ear function due to its poor biocompatibility and the resultant fibrosis. Herein, a porous methacrylated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (MA-PDMS)-coated cochlear electrode is presented for CI and hearing protection. The porous MA-PDMS is filled with a hybrid hydrogel system made of dexamethasone sodium phosphate (Dex), Ti3C2Tx MXene (MXene), and methacrylate gelatin (GelMA).

HYPOTHESIS: This study reports the cochlear histopathology of two patients who during life underwent cochlear implantation with a positioner.
BACKGROUND: A silastic positioner introduced by the Advanced Bionics Corporation in 1999 was designed to position the electrode of the cochlear implant close to the modiolus. The positioner was recalled in the United States in July 2002 because of an apparent higher incidence of bacterial meningitis in patients in whom the positioner had been placed.
METHODS: Four celloidin-embedded temporal bones from two patients with cochlear implants with a positio
