The auditory (cochlear) ganglion cells of the alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus) give rise to two types of peripheral fibers: tectorial fibers, which contact hair cells covered by a tectorial membrane, and free-standing fibers, which contact hair cells without a tectorial membrane. To determine the central projections of these fibers, we applied intracellular and extracellular injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the peripheral component of the cochlear nerve. After histological processing with diaminobenzidine, individual cochlear nerve fibers could be traced through seria

INTRODUCTION: Normative data on superior olivary nucleus neuron counts derived from human specimens are sparse, and little is known about their coherence with structure and function of the cochlea. The purpose of this study was to quantify the neuron populations of the divisions of the superior olivary nucleus in human subjects with normal hearing and presbycusis and investigate potential relationships between these findings and histopathology in the cochlea and hearing phenotype Methods: Histopathologic examination of temporal bone and brainstem specimens from 13 subjects having normal hearin

Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) was mapped in the auditory pathway of Sprague-Dawley rats in response to unilateral electrical stimulation of the cochlea implanted with two stimulating electrodes. Densely packed FLI neurons were widely distributed in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (more ipsilaterally than contralaterally), while FLI neurons were rare in the posteroventral cochlear nucleus and virtually absent in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus. Sparse FLI was detected in the superior olivary complex, the pontine nuclei and the ipsilateral dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus, whereas the co

In the cochlear complex of white male rats the dorsal nucleus, the anterior ventral nucleus, the posterior ventral nucleus and the granular layer were studied histologically and morphometrically. While counting the number of different cells in all the above mentioned formations, by means of ocular grid (S.B. Stefanov, 1974) it was revealed that the granular neurons of the cochlear nuclei of the rats form 72--86 per cent of all the cells. The granular cells represent an independent type of neurons and these differ clearly from other neurons by the diameter of their nuclei and by the size of the

The macula lagenae, an otolithic hair-cell organ with probable vestibular function, lies close to the apical end of the avian auditory hair-cell epithelium, the papilla basilaris. In an earlier study in the pigeon in which lesioning techniques were used, Boord and Rasmussen ([1963] J. Comp. Neurol. 120:463-473) reported finding a projection of lagenar fibers to parts of the cochlear nuclei (nucleus magnocellularis and nucleus angularis). Subsequent to this report, it has been generally assumed that at least part of the cochlear nuclei has a vestibular or a combined vestibular-auditory function

The medial portion of the cochlear nerve of the rat contains astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and neurons. These neurons form what has been called the 'acoustic nerve nucleus'. This nucleus has been studied here at the electron microscopic level. Its neurons are large and round, showing an eccentric nucleus, fibrillary bodies and rough endoplasmic reticulum which is not arranged in stacks. The somata and dendrites receive synaptic endfeet which can be classified into three groups according to vesicle size and shape. In general, the ultrastructural characteristics of these cells are similar to thos

Patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 often develop bilateral life-threatening vestibular schwannoma necessitating tumor removal, which results in deafness. We developed the auditory brainstem implant (ABI) in order to be able to electrically stimulate the cochlear nucleus complex in patients with bilateral cochlear nerve injury from bilateral schwannoma. After tumor removal, the electrode array of the ABI is inserted into the lateral recess of the fourth ventricle and placed over the surface of the ventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei. The ABI is designed to stimulate auditory neural structure

Binaural and monaural ossicle ablation in neonate rats before the time of onset of auditory input resulted in hearing deficits as detected by behavioural responses to sound stimuli in these rats as young adults. Cochlear disruption at the same neonatal age similarly resulted in the absence of startle reflexes in many of the rats. When the middle and inner ears of the rats were analysed postmortem in serial sections, it was observed that most ears after neonatal ossicle ablation contained only small remnants of the malleus-incus unit, separated from the stapes; in other ears an apparent continu

Npr2 (natriuretic peptide receptor 2) affects bifurcation of neural crest or placode-derived afferents upon entering the brain stem/spinal cord, leading to a lack of either rostral or caudal branches. Previous work has shown that early embryonic growth of cochlear and vestibular afferents is equally affected in this mutant but later work on postnatal Npr2 point mutations suggested some additional effects on the topology of afferent projections and mild functional defects. Using multicolor lipophilic dye tracing, we show that absence of Npr2 has little to no effect on the initial patterning of

BACKGROUND: Guidelines established by the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) currently recommend behavioral testing when fitting frequency-modulated (FM) systems to individuals with cochlear implants (CIs). A protocol for completing electroacoustic measures on CI sound processors has not yet been established or validated when fitting either FM or digital-modulated (DM) systems, mini microphones, or mini microphones coupled to DM systems. In response, professionals have used or altered the AAA (2008) electroacoustic verification steps for fitting FM systems to hearing aids when fitting FM/DM s

The physiological diversity of inhibitory neurons provides ample opportunity to influence a wide range of computational roles through their varied activity patterns, especially via feedback loops. In the avian auditory brain stem, inhibition originates primarily from the superior olivary nucleus (SON), and so it is critical to understand the intrinsic physiological properties and processing capabilities of these neurons. Neurons in the SON receive ascending input via the cochlear nuclei: directly from the intensity-coding cochlear nucleus angularis (NA) and indirectly via the interaural timing

The auditory midbrain implant (AMI) is a new central auditory prosthesis designed for penetrating stimulation of the human inferior colliculus. The major group of candidates for the AMI consists of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) patients who develop neural deafness because of growth and/or surgical removal of bilateral acoustic neuromas. Because of the absence of a viable auditory nerve, these patients cannot benefit from cochlear implants. An alternative solution has been the auditory brainstem implant (ABI), which stimulates the cochlear nucleus. However, speech perception performance in NF2

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a neurovisceral lipid storage disorder characterized by progressive and widespread neurodegeneration. Although some characteristic symptoms of NPC result from brainstem dysfunction, little information is available about which brainstem structures are affected. In this study, the brainstems of mutant BALB/c NPC1-/- mice with a retroposon insertion in the NPC1 gene were examined for neuropathological changes. In the midbrain, the integrated optic density (IOD) and cell count density of tyrosine-hydroxylase (TH) immunostained neurons were decreased in the subs

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is now used to stimulate the cochlear nucleus to obtain auditory perception in patients with type 2 neurofibromatosis. Only electrical stimulation of the cochlear nucleus complex, in the lateral recess of the fourth ventricle, can achieve auditory rehabilitation of these profound bilateral retrocochlear deafness. With 20 standard translabyrinthine approaches, our personal anatomical study propose to describe surgical landmarks of the cochlear nuclear complex and surgical accessibility of the lateral recess of the fourth ventricle. Degenerative change in the central auditory system was assessed in seven subjects with profound bilateral adult-onset deafness. The degree of transneuronal atrophy was determined by measuring cell size at three levels of the brain stem auditory pathway (anteroventral cochlear nucleus, medial superior olivary nucleus, and inferior colliculus). Within subjects, the relative degree of cell shrinkage was similar across all levels of the central pathway. Across subjects, the best neuronal preservation was seen in a case of viral labyrinthitis with 1 year of bilateral dearness and a near-normal popu

One hypothesis suggests that tinnitus is a form of sensory epilepsy, arising partly from neuronal hyperactivity in auditory regions of the brain such as the cochlear nucleus and inferior colliculus. Although there is currently no effective drug treatment for tinnitus, anti-epileptic drugs are used in some cases as a potential treatment option. There is increasing evidence to suggest that cannabinoid drugs, i.e. cannabinoid receptor agonists, can also have anti-epileptic effects, at least in some cases and in some parts of the brain. It has been reported that cannabinoid CB1 receptors and the e

Noise exposure is one of the most common causes of hearing loss and peripheral damage to the auditory system. A growing literature suggests that the auditory system can compensate for peripheral loss through increased central neural activity. The current study sought to investigate the link between noise exposure, increases in central gain, synaptic reorganization, and auditory function. All axons of the auditory nerve project to the cochlear nucleus, making it a requisite nucleus for sound detection. As the first synapse in the central auditory system, the cochlear nucleus is well positioned
