OBJECTIVES: To analyze the association between neurocognitive performance and age-related hearing loss in the right and left ear, individually.
DESIGN: Subjects included 5277 participants (≥50 years) from the general Hispanic population who underwent audiometric testing in a US multicentered epidemiologic study. Linear regression was performed to assess the cross-sectional association between cognitive performance (Digit Symbol Substitution Test [DSST], Word Frequency Test, Spanish-English Verbal Learning Test [SEVLT] 3 Trials, SEVLT Recall, and Six-Item Screener) and hearing in each ear (4-f

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for cognitive decline might depend on chronological age. The aim of the study was to explore the age dependency of risk factors for cognitive decline in cognitively healthy subjects aged 55-85 years at baseline.
METHODS: We included 2527 cognitively healthy subjects from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). Median follow-up was 9.1 (IQR: 3.2-19.0) years. The association of genetic and cardiovascular risk factors, depressive symptoms, inflammation markers and lifestyle risk factors with decline in MMSE and memory function was tested using spline regression an

Several previous studies showed that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) share common risk factors and histopathology changes, and there is epidemiological evidence linking AMD to cognitive impairment. We tested this theory in 51 patients with late-stage AMD and 24 controls by analyzing their neuropsychological profiles. In this study, data showed that patients affected by late-stage AMD have a worse global cognitive function than those of the controls and, in particular, show worse performances in memory tasks. Moreover, patients affected by the dry form of AMD

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Feline mast cell tumors (MCTs) are frequently encountered in general practice. MCTs are the most common splenic tumor, second most common skin tumor and third most common intestinal tumor in cats. Treatment and prognosis can vary dramatically with location and histologic classification.
CLINICAL CHALLENGES: While a cytologic or histologic diagnosis is often easy to obtain, the various histologic classifications, lack of a relevant grading scheme, and disparity in behavior depending on anatomic location make prognostication for cases of feline MCTs confusing. This is quite

The article presents a commentary on the accompanying six papers from the perspective of a cognitive psychologist. Treisman's (1964, 1969) levels of analysis model of selective attention is suggested as a framework within which the interactions between 'bottom-up' auditory factors and 'top-down' cognitive factors may be understood. The complementary roles of auditory and cognitive aspects of hearing are explored, and their mutually compensatory properties discussed. The findings and ideas reported in the six accompanying papers fit well into such a 'levels of processing' framework, which may t

Studies have shown that parkinsonian signs are related to cognitive function in aging. What remains unclear is whether this association is stronger for some cognitive domains than it is for others, and precisely how much variability in global and specific cognitive functions is explained by the motor signs. We examined the associations between four parkinsonian signs (gait, rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor) and five cognitive domains (episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, perceptual speed, visuospatial ability) in a large cohort of older persons who were free of Parkinson's disease a

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) or presbycusis is a bilateral sensorineural hearing impairment associated with aging of the structures of the inner ear and auditory pathways and is the most common cause of acquired hearing loss in older adults. Presbycusis is a disabling condition that affects communication and quality of life, and has been associated with poorer cognitive performance. This study aimed to examine the association between ARHL, cognitive screening performance, and hearing-related quality of life in older adults.
METHODS: This single-center prospective observational

In developed countries age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma are the most common diseases of old age that cause irreversible blindness. Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent cause of dementia among older adults, is often associated with AMD and glaucoma. Features of AD include extracellular accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) and intracellular deposits of hyperphosphorylated forms of tau-protein. In addition, neuroinflammation and impaired iron metabolism in the brain are involved in the pathogenesis of AD, which ultimately leads to progressive neuronal death and dementia. It w

The increasing aging demographics never seen before is associated with the enormous challenge of dementia epidemics which urgently needs a paradigm shift in the approach to cognitive functions in health and disease. If on one hand the achievement or maintenance of a healthy lifestyle should be a medical priority, the early recognition of cognitive disturbances is mandatory. Cognitive impairment is not only associated with disability and lack of compliance and adherence, but also with dangerous geriatric syndromes such as instability, falls, and delirium. The evaluation of cognitive performance

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline and impairment of physical performance and mobility are age-related clinical problems with major negative impact on quality of life of elderly men. In how far the decline of testosterone production contributes to these problems in older men and whether testosterone therapy can contribute to slow down, prevent, or reverse their development remains subjects of debate.
OBJECTIVES: This narrative review presents the current knowledge on association of sex steroid status with cognitive decline and impairment of physical function and mobility in elderly men and on the

DHA is a key nutritional n-3 PUFA and needs to be supplied by the human diet. DHA is found in significant amounts in the retinal and neuronal cell membranes due to its high fluidity. Indeed, DHA is selectively concentrated in the synaptic and retinal membranes. DHA is deemed to display anti-inflammatory properties and to reduce the risk of CVD. Consumption of larger amounts of DHA appears to reduce the risk of depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and mood disorders. Conversely, it has been shown that loss of DHA from the nerve cell membrane leads to dysfunction of the central nervous sy

PURPOSE: To determine whether people with age-related eye disease have lower cognitive scores than people with healthy vision.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was performed in which 420 people aged 65 and older from the ophthalmology clinics at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital (Montreal, Canada) were recruited who had age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Fuch's corneal dystrophy, or glaucoma. Patients with AMD and Fuchs had to have visual acuity in the better eye of worse than 20/40 while patients with glaucoma had to have visual field in their worse eye of at least -4 dB. Con

Healthy aging is characterized by a diminished quality of sleep with decreased sleep duration and increased time awake after sleep onset. Older adults awaken more frequently and tend to awaken less from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and more from non-REM (nREM) sleep than young adults. Sleep architecture also begins changing in middle age leading to a dramatic decrease in the deepest stage of nREM-slow wave sleep (SWS)-as aging progresses. Other less marked nREM changes include reduced numbers of sleep spindles and K-complexes. In contrast, the amount of REM diminishes only slightly. Both cir

This review considers the research to date on the role of nutrition in cognitive development in children, with a particular emphasis on the relatively neglected post-infancy period. Undernutrition and deficiencies of iodine, iron, and folate are all important for the development of the brain and the emergent cognitive functions, and there is some evidence to suggest that zinc, vitamin B12, and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may also be important. Considerations for future research include a focus on the interactions between micronutrients and macronutrients that might be influential in th

INTRODUCTION: The glymphatic system dysfunction is associated with cognitive decline in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD).
METHODS: We introduce the G-Along Perivascular Space (G-ALPS) index, an optimized version of the ALPS index derived using Genetic Programming, and use it to analyze 217 diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) samples.
RESULTS: Compared to the ALPS, the proposed G-ALPS index shows a stronger correlation with cognitive measures, including Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE, 2.78% improvement), Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR, 5.13% improvement), and Functio

White matter (WM) is a key substrate for interregional neural communication and cognitive function but the role of WM glucose metabolism in cognitive aging has been understudied. Using multimodal neuroimaging (MRI, FDG-PET, amyloid-PET) from 3142 participants (15,287 visits) across two studies, we examined the contribution of WM to cognition and identified divergent WM signatures. Higher glucose metabolism in expected WM (EWM; corpus callosum and cingulum) was associated with better cognition, whereas increased metabolism in atypical WM (AWM; corona radiata) was linked to worse cognition, indi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Chronic alcohol use accelerates biological and cognitive aging, yet it remains unclear how cognitive aging progresses during abstinence in alcohol use disorder (AUD). It is also unknown to what extent this follows models such as accelerated aging or the age-related decline as proposed by the vulnerability hypothesis. This study examined age-related changes and cognitive recovery during abstinence in patients with AUD.
METHODS: A total of 197 clinically admitted patients, referred for detoxification and extensive neuropsychological examination, were included. Neuropsycho
