BACKGROUND: Glymphatic dysfunction is proposed as a final common pathway to dementia. Cognitive impairment following ischemic stroke can gradually worsen, potentially leading to post-stroke dementia. This study aimed to examine the changes in glymphatic function in post-stroke patients and explore its relationship with cognition.
METHODS: A total of thirty-two post-stroke patients and twenty-seven healthy controls (HCs) matched for age, sex, and educational level were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent neurological MRI scans and comprehensive cognitive assessments six months f

Cognitive dysfunction, characterized by the deposition of amyloid β (Aβ), such as senile plaque (SP) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), and phosphorylated tau are observed in several animal species, including primates, dogs, and cats, suggesting that these disorders are universal age-related phenomena in vertebrates. Additionally, argyrophilic neurofibrillary tangles positive for phosphorylated tau have been observed in primates, marine mammals, and felines. Recent findings regarding the pathology of cognitive dysfunction in aged non-human animals provide valuable information from a compar

OBJECTIVES: While attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) persists into adulthood, the relationship between glymphatic system function and cognitive performance in adult ADHD remains unclear. This study investigated the association between glymphatic system markers and cognitive outcomes in adults with ADHD.
METHODS: This case-control study includes 41 adults with ADHD and 108 age-matched healthy controls (HCs). Glymphatic function was evaluated using choroid plexus volume (CPV), diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index and coupling between blood‑oxygen-l

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric syndromes such as anxiety and agitation are clinical presentations common to diverse neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury sequelae. They are a concern due to the impact on cognition, social interactions, and non-pharmacological treatments. Cognitive or behavioral disturbances occur at early disease stages and increase with disease progression. Coincident pathologies include the loss of serotonin (5-HT) neurons and appearance of neurofibrillary tangles in the raphe nucleus. Brain 5-HT2b receptor (5-HT2bR) levels are increased in Alzheimer's disease (AD), am

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and the aggregation of tau protein, resulting in intense memory loss and dementia. Diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction (DACD) is a complication of diabetes mellitus, which is associated with decreased cognitive function and impaired memory. A growing body of literature emphasize the involvement of microglia in AD and DACD. Although AD and DACD share some common features related to symptomatology and pathophysiology, the characteristics and heterogeneity of microglia remain largely unknown in these two

More than half of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) survivors develop delayed cognitive dysfunction, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study investigated the role of meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) in this complication by examining their structural integrity, drainage capacity, and association with cognitive deficits post-SAH. In adult male C57BL/6J mice in which SAH was induced by intracisternal injection of autologous blood, spatial learning and memory, and hippocampal CA1 neuronal activity were impaired as early as 1 month post-surgery, with a marked exacerbation of these de

Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) significantly impacts cancer survivors. Due to unclear mechanisms, effective treatments for cognitive deficits are lacking. Here, we examined if microglia-mediated deficits in synaptic plasticity drive CRCI. Adult male mice were treated with the chemotherapeutic drugs 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin (5-Fu/LV, intraperitoneal injection, I.P.) on Days 1, 8, and 15 at a dosage of 50 mg/kg for 5-Fu and 90 mg/kg for LV for 3 weeks. Cognitive function was assessed using a novel object recognition (NOR) test 4 weeks after completion of 5-Fu/LV treatment.

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a group of neurodegenerative disorders primarily characterized by progressive ataxia due to degeneration of the cerebellum and its afferent and efferent pathways. Although cerebellar motor symptoms are the clinical hallmark, considerable phenotypic variability exists across SCA subtypes and among individuals with the same genetic mutation. Depending on the subtype and the extent of cerebellar and extracerebellar involvement, various cognitive domains-including memory, attention, executive function, and language-may also be affected. Notably, the cognitive and

Postoperative cognitive impairment is a common disorder after major surgery. Advances in medicine and treatment have resulted in an increasingly ageing population undergoing major surgical procedures. Since age is the most important risk factor for postoperative cognitive decline, it is not surprising that impairment of cognitive functions after surgery was recorded in almost a third of elderly patients. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction is part of the spectrum of postoperative cognitive impairment and researchers often confuse it with postoperative delirium and delayed neurocognitive recove

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD) is a major functional disorder in patients with cancer. This central nervous dysfunction is found in up to 60% of patients after tumour therapy, often significantly limits the quality of life, and significantly impedes participation in working life. For this reason, diagnosis and treatment of CRCD are of central importance. This narrative review is intended to provide an overview and support for practical clinical care with regard to diagnostics and therapeutic options.
SUMMARY: In Germany, CRCD has received insufficient attention in cli

Cognitive dysfunction is common in Moyamoya disease (MMD). However, current knowledge of cognitive impairment in MMD is inadequate. In this review, we explored the characteristics of altered cognitive function associated with MMD and offered recommendations aimed at guiding potential research endeavors into the cognitive dysfunction in MMD. Cognitive functions, including executive function, intelligence, memory and so on, show characteristic declines in MMD. The effects of cerebral revascularization surgery on cognitive impairment are controversial. Currently, there is still a lack of relevant

Maintaining good health is crucial, and exercise plays a vital role in achieving this goal. It offers a range of positive benefits for cognitive function, regardless of age. However, as our population ages and life expectancy increases, cognitive impairment has become a prevalent issue, often coexisting with age-related neurodegenerative conditions. This can result in devastating consequences such as memory loss, difficulty speaking, and confusion, greatly hindering one's ability to lead an ordinary life. In addition, the decrease in mental capacity has a significant effect on an individual's

BACKGROUND: The origin of pre-existing cognitive impairment in stroke patients remains controversial, with a vascular or a degenerative hypothesis.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether endothelial dysfunction is associated with pre-existing cognitive problems, lesion load and biological anomalies in stroke patients.
METHODS: Patients originated from the prospective STROKDEM study. The baseline cognitive state, assessed using the IQ-CODE, and risk factors for stroke were recorded at inclusion. Patients with an IQ-CODE score >64 were excluded. Endothelial function was determined 72 h after stroke s

Nasal administration can bypass the blood-brain barrier and directly deliver drugs to the brain, providing a non-invasive route for central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Inspired by the appearance that a gate can block the outside world and the characteristics of the sol-gel transition can form a "gate" in the nasal cavity, a Drop to Gate nasal drop (DGND) is designed to set a gate in nose, which achieves protecting role from the influence of nasal environment. The DGND demonstrates the efficiency and application prospect of delivering drugs to the brain through the N-to-B. The effective conc

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cognitive functions including memory in middle-aged and elderly patients with antiseizure drug-naïve late-onset temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).
METHODS: We performed assessments with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III (WAIS-III) and Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) in 26 antiseizure drug-naïve patients with late-onset TLE, in comparison to 30 healthy subjects. We investigated the relationships between these cognitive function scores and clinical characteristics, seizure frequency, and frequency of interictal epileptic discharges (IEDs).
RESULTS: Patients wit

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is a major feature of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the pathophysiology remains unknown. One potential mechanism is abnormal low-frequency cortical rhythms which engage cognitive functions and are deficient in PD. We tested the hypothesis that mid-frontal delta/theta rhythms predict cognitive dysfunction in PD.
METHOD: We recruited 100 patients with PD and 49 demographically similar control participants who completed a series of cognitive control tasks, including the Simon, oddball and interval-timing tasks. We focused on cue-evoked delta (1-4 Hz) and theta (

In the last 5 years, there has been a surge in evidence that hearing loss (HL) may be a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction, including dementia. At the same time, there has been an increase in the number of studies implicating vestibular loss in cognitive dysfunction. Due to the fact that vestibular disorders often present with HL and other auditory disorders such as tinnitus, it has been suggested that, in many cases, what appears to be vestibular-related cognitive dysfunction may be due to HL (e.g., Dobbels et al. Front Neurol 11:710, 2020). This review analyses the studies of vestibular-r

PURPOSE: High-dose benzodiazepines (BZDs) abuse has been documented to cause multidomain cognitive dysfunction. We explored whether cognitive abnormalities to high-dose BZD abuse might be reversed by detoxification with slow subcutaneous infusion of flumazenil.
METHODS: We recruited 96 patients consecutively admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine, Addiction Medicine Unit, Verona University Hospital, Italy for detoxification from high-dose BZD dependence. After selection for inclusion and exclusion criteria, 50 patients (23 men, 27 women; age 42.7 ± 10.3 years) were included. They und

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a disabling disease associated with profound functional impairment. Cognitive deficits, increasingly recognised as a core feature of MDD, reduce educational, occupational and social outcomes, and impair quality of life and functionality. Unlike cognitive impairments associated with schizophrenia (CIAS), cognitive impairments in depression have been under diagnosed and are poorly understood. Consensus has yet to be reached regarding the nature of these deficits, their appropriate assessment and treatment options. It is unclear whether existing treatments have
