Translating advances in the molecular basis of schizophrenia into novel cognitive treatment strategies.

The presence and severity of cognitive symptoms, including working memory, executive dysfunction and attentional impairment, contributes materially to functional impairment in schizophrenia. Cognitive symptoms have proved to be resistant to both first- and second-generation antipsychotic drugs. Efforts to develop a consensus set of cognitive domains that are both disrupted in schizophrenia and are amenable to cross-species validation (e.g. the National Institute of Mental Health Cognitive Neuroscience Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia and Research Domain Criteria initiat

[Contributions of neuroscience to the diagnosis and educational treatment of developmental dyslexia].

AIM: To examine the advances made in the fields of cognitive psychology, neuroscience and education and how they have contributed to each other. DEVELOPMENT: The paper offers a review of the current models of dyslexia and analyses the relation between these models and neuroimaging studies and educational intervention. The first model presented here is the 'phonological deficit' model, which is the most widely proven and accepted today. People with dyslexia have difficulty in completing tasks that involve segmenting language at a phonological level. Neuroimaging studies also reveal the existen

Immersive exposure to simulated visual hallucinations modulates high-level human cognition.

Psychedelic drugs offer valuable insights into consciousness, but disentangling their causal effects on perceptual and high-level cognition is nontrivial. Technological advances in virtual reality (VR) and machine learning have enabled the immersive simulation of visual hallucinations. However, comprehensive experimental data on how these simulated hallucinations affects high-level human cognition is lacking. Here, we exposed human participants to VR panoramic videos and their psychedelic counterparts generated by the DeepDream algorithm. Participants exhibited reduced task-switching costs aft

Effects of Toxoplasma gondii infection on cognition, symptoms, and response to digital cognitive training in schizophrenia.

Studies indicate that neuroscience-informed digital cognitive training can remediate cognitive impairments in schizophrenia, but the factors contributing to these deficits and response to treatment remain unclear. Toxoplasma gondii is a neuroinvasive parasite linked to cognitive decline that also presents a higher prevalence in schizophrenia. Here, we compared the cognition and symptom severity of IgG seropositive (TOXO+; n = 25) and seronegative (TOXO-; n = 35) patients who participated in a randomized controlled trial of digital cognitive training. At baseline, TOXO+ subjects presented lower

Learning neural evolution operators: from decoding to identifiable causal state-space models.

Neural encoding, decoding, and representation-learning approaches have substantially advanced our ability to predict sensory, behavioral, and cognitive variables from neural population activity. At the same time, dynamical systems approaches increasingly model neural computation as the evolution of latent population states governed by recurrent interactions and structured state transitions. Although these frameworks are often presented as competing paradigms, both can successfully reproduce neural observations while still failing to uniquely identify the computational mechanisms implemented by

The role of musical aspects of language in human cognition.

This paper reviews musicology, linguistics, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience research on the importance of music in developing human speech and cognition. It cites research from several scientific fields on how the brain processes and reacts to melody, rhythm, harmony, loudness, dynamics and types of articulation and timbre. It also discusses musical concepts and prosodic features such as intonation, rhythm and stress related to linguistic terminology and summarises results of earlier research on how the two systems interact to strengthen or weaken an individual's ability to function wit

Multi-threshold polygenic risk improves hippocampal-based cognitive decline prediction.

BACKGROUND: Predicting cognitive decline from brain MRI is a central question in neuroscience. Hippocampal volume (HV) is a key cognitive biomarker, and normative models can be augmented with multimodal information. Here we augment normative models with genetic information and show improvements in cognitive decline prediction across multiple experimental setups. METHODS: We improve normative models for HV by integrating multi-threshold polygenic scores (PGS) with demographic and imaging data using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). Models were trained on 23,997 participants from UK Biobank (U

The functions of the temporal-parietal junction.

In the human brain, the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) is a histologically heterogenous area that includes the ventral portions of the parietal cortex and the caudal superior temporal gyrus sector adjacent to the posterior end of the Sylvian fissure. The anatomical heterogeneity of the TPJ is matched by its seemingly ubiquitous involvement in different cognitive functions that span from memory to language, attention, self-consciousness, and social behavior. In line with established clinical evidence, recent fMRI investigations have confirmed relevant hemispheric differences in the TPJ functi

Cognitive Enhancement via Network-Targeted Cortico-cortical Associative Brain Stimulation.

Fluid intelligence (gf) represents a crucial component of human cognition, as it correlates with academic achievement, successful aging, and longevity. However, it has strong resilience against enhancement interventions, making the identification of gf enhancement approaches a key unmet goal of cognitive neuroscience. Here, we applied a spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP)-inducing brain stimulation protocol, named cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (cc-PAS), to modulate gf in 29 healthy young subjects (13 females-mean ± standard deviation, 25.43 years ± 3.69), based on dual-c

Antibody-Mediated Mechanisms in Autoimmune Neurological Disorders.

Antibody-mediated encephalitides are a rapidly evolving class of disorders in which autoantibodies against neuronal surface proteins disrupt synaptic function, neural circuits and cognition. This article summarizes the presentations and discussions from a symposium at the 2025 meeting of the Spanish Society of Neuroscience (SENC). Rather than providing a comprehensive review of autoimmune encephalitis, we highlight selected advances that illustrate how antibody-mediated mechanisms contribute to neurological dysfunction, using anti-NMDAR encephalitis as a paradigmatic example. Specifically, we

Representation of action in occipito-temporal cortex.

A fundamental question for social cognitive neuroscience is how and where in the brain the identities and actions of others are represented. Here we present a replication and extension of a study by Kable and Chatterjee [Kable, J. W., & Chatterjee, A. Specificity of action representations in the lateral occipito-temporal cortex. Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 18, 1498-1517, 2006] examining the role of occipito-temporal cortex in these processes. We presented full-cue movies of actors performing whole-body actions and used fMRI to test for action- and identity-specific adaptation effects. W

Drivers and mechanisms of cognitive decline in chronic kidney disease.

Cognitive impairment is highly prevalent among individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Despite its high prevalence, the contributing factors and mechanisms underlying brain-kidney dysfunction in CKD remain poorly understood. However, advances in neuroscience, including novel imaging techniques and cognitive assessment methods, have begun to clarify this complex relationship. Several factors contribute directly to cognitive decline in people with CKD, including accumulation of uraemic toxins, microvascular damage, malnutrition, chronic inflammation and disruptions in key neuroprotective

Prevention Neuroscience: A new frontier for preventive medicine.

Prevention neuroscience may be defined as follows: an interdisciplinary field concerned with the neurobiological factors that influence susceptibility to preventable disease, disability or mortality. It includes, but is not limited to: examination of brain health as an outcome, brain activity as a predictor of health outcomes, brain structures/systems as causal determinants of health outcomes (e.g., health behaviours), and the brain as a mediator of other causal influences (e.g., social conditions) on health outcomes. This commentary describes concepts, theory and research illustrating each of

Sleep and cognition in South African patients with non-functioning pituitary adenomas.

Strong lines of evidence in the neuroscience literature indicate that (a) healthy sleep facilitates cognitive processing, and (b) sleep disruption is associated with cognitive dysfunction. Despite the fact that patients with pituitary disease often display both disrupted sleep and cognitive dysfunction, few previous studies investigate whether these clinical characteristics in these patients might be related. Hence, we explored whether sleep disruption in patients with pituitary disease mediates their cognitive dysfunction. We recruited 18 patients with non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPA

The making of number: from content to representation.

Despite their importance to human thought, the origins of numerical abilities remain debated. Numerical quantity is a property of physical objects and events, and both humans and many animals show an innate sensitivity to this numerical content. Yet how this content is represented is a separate question: it may be encoded nonsymbolically by an innate estimation system or symbolically through culturally developed formats, such as numeral notations and number words. Distinguishing content from representational format reconciles the views that numbers are innate (nativism), learned (empiricism),

Clinical and cognitive assessment in Friedreich ataxia clinical trials: a review.

Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is the most common type of inherited ataxia. It is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive gait and limb ataxia, dysarthria, areflexia, and reduced proprioception and vibration sensation. Although a number of clinical trials have been conducted, there is currently no cure for this disease. In this article we review those clinical trials with a focus on the instruments used as endpoints to assess clinical progression, and discuss the potential benefits of integrating additional measures, including assessments from overlooked domains. We also review too

The Kinetic Chain Has a Brain: Could Adding Cognitive Demands in Lower Limb Injury Prevention Programs Improve Outcomes?

SYNOPSIS: The most effective lower limb injury prevention programs include strength training, balance exercises, and instructions on how to land safely from a jump or hop. Yet, the programs are not 100% effective-lower extremity noncontact injuries continue to be a significant problem. We suggest that adding cognitive training to motor tasks that currently comprise current lower limb injury prevention programs might help clinicians, athletes, and coaches continue to make inroads into preventing knee injuries. We ground our hypotheses in robust findings from cognitive neuroscience and rehabilit

Paranoid thinking, suspicion, and risk for aggression: a neurodevelopmental perspective.

This article represents an effort to extend our understanding of paranoia or suspicion and its development by integrating findings across clinical, developmental, and neuroscience literatures. We first define "paranoia" or paranoid thought and examine its prevalence across typically and atypically developing individuals and theoretical perspectives regarding its development and maintenance. We then briefly summarize current ideas regarding the neural correlates of adaptive, appropriately trusting interpersonal perception, social cognition, and behavior across development. Our focus shifts subs
