Based on a molecular neuroendocrine theory about cold environments, thyroid hormone levels, and liganded thyroid hormone receptor interference with estrogen receptor function, experiments were designed to test female mouse reproductive behaviors in the cold. Because natural seasonal temperature declines would usually be associated with decreased photoperiods and reduced food supplies, we combined cold temperatures with short days and metabolic challenge. The simplest hypothesis was that lordosis quotients would be significantly reduced as a result of cold temperatures. That hypothesis was deni

The goals of this study were to evaluate whether touch can identify a warm nose as opposed to a cold nose, to examine the correlation between thermographically measured nose temperatures and rectal temperatures, and to calculate the accuracy of tactile assessment of nose temperature in detecting rectal hyperthermia and hypothermia in dogs. A total of 100 dogs presenting to an emergency room was prospectively enrolled. Tactile nose assessment was carried out on triage. Noses were subjectively categorized as warm, cold, or intermediate (neither warm nor cold). Thermographic nose temperatures wer

24 patients, 16 after severe head injury and 8 after spontaneous intracranial haematoma, were investigated by external cold load in order to determine their thermoregulatory capabilities. Tympanic temperature, several skin temperatures and oxygen consumption were measured. The patients where examined for SSEP and AEP. The cold induced thermoregulatory threshold temperature was determined by calculating the mean body temperature and by determining mean body temperature at which oxygen consumption increased due to the external cold load. In all patients core temperature and mean body temperature

Chilling injury and death are the ultimate consequence of low temperature exposure for chill susceptible insects, and low temperature tolerance is considered one of the most important factors determining insect distribution patterns. The physiological mechanisms that cause chilling injury are unknown, but chronic cold exposure that causes injury is consistently associated with elevated extracellular [K(+)], and cold tolerant insects possess a greater capacity to maintain ion balance at low temperatures. Here, we use the muscle tissue of the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) to examine whet

UNLABELLED: Gorjanc, Jurij, Shawnda A. Morrison, Rok Blagus, and Igor B. Mekjavic. Cold susceptibility of digit stumps resulting from amputation after freezing cold injury in elite alpinists. High Alt Med Biol. 19:185-192, 2018.
AIM: The aim of the study was to assess whether previous freezing cold injury in fingers and/or toes might predispose alpinists to greater risk of further freezing cold injury, primarily due to a greater vasoconstrictor response to cold, resulting in a lower perfusion, reflected in lower skin temperature.
METHODS: Ten elite alpinists (N = 10; 8 male and 2 female) wit

Thermoregulatory control of human body temperature is of paramount importance for normal bodily functions. Exposure of the upper and lower limbs to localized cold stress can cause cold-induced injuries and often lower limbs are more susceptible to damages from cold-induced injuries. In this study, we use infrared thermal imaging to probe localized cold stress induced cutaneous vasoconstriction of lower limbs in 33 healthy subjects. The cold stress is actuated by applying ice to the plantar surfaces of the lower limbs for 180 s and after removal of the cold stress, infrared thermography is util

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have found associations between extreme temperatures and human mortality but relatively few studies have been done in sub-tropical and tropical cities, especially in Asia. In this study we examine the impact of cold temperatures, cold waves and other meteorological and environmental variables on cool season mortality in 2 subtropical Asian cities.
METHODS: Separate analysis of daily mortality time-series from Hong Kong and Taipei using Generalized Additive Models with natural mortality as the outcome daily mean temperature as the main explanatory variable and rela

BACKGROUND: Tissue exposure to cold temperatures is common in clinical practice, yet the safety of exposing the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) to cold remains unclear. This study evaluated temperature-dependent effects of cold exposure on RLN function.
METHODS: A porcine continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring (C-IONM) model was used to assess electromyographic (EMG) changes in 16 RLNs exposed to four temperature conditions: room temperature water, cold water, ice water, and ice block. Each exposure lasted 1 min, followed by 20 min of EMG monitoring.
RESULTS: Room temperature and cold wat

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning occurs mostly in winter and is associated with severe cold weather (e.g., ice storms, temperature drops). However, according to previous studies, the impact of low temperature on health has a delayed effect, and the existing research cannot fully reveal the delayed effect of cold waves on CO poisoning.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to analyze the temporal distribution of CO poisoning in Jinan and to explore the acute effect of cold waves on CO poisoning.
METHODS: We collected emergency call data for CO poi

In this study, we extended our previously developed anatomically detailed three-dimensional (3-D) thermoregulatory virtual human model for predicting heat stress to allow for predictions of heat and cold stress in one unified model. Starting with the modified Pennes bioheat transfer equation to estimate the spatiotemporal temperature distribution within the body as the underlying modeling structure, we developed a new formulation to characterize the spatial variation of blood temperature between body elements and within the limbs. We also implemented the means to represent heat generated from

BACKGROUND: Long-term clinical success and graft integration after osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation rely on chondrocyte viability, which can be compromised by thermal injury during graft harvest.
HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that handheld cold saline irrigation and cold saline submersion would reduce thermal injury during OCA harvest and preserve chondrocyte viability compared with dry harvest, and that submersion would provide superior protection than handheld irrigation.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Ten fresh human femoral condyles (from 7 donors) we

Moderate cold stimulation regulates the thymus's growth and function and facilitates cold acclimatization in broilers. However, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. To explore the possible mechanism of the thymus in cold-acclimated broilers against cold stress, 240 one-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) broilers were assigned to 2 groups randomly. The control group (C) was housed at conventional temperatures. The temperature during the first week was 33°C to 34°C. Between the ages of 8 and 32 d, the temperature was lowered by 1°C every 2 d, i.e., gradually from 32°C to 20°C, and then maintained at

BACKGROUND: Exposure to cold temperatures is often a neglected problem in prehospital care. Cold exposure increase thermal discomfort and, if untreated causes disturbances of vital body functions until ultimately reaching hypothermia. It may also impair cognitive function, increase pain and contribute to fear and an overall sense of dissatisfaction. The aim of this study was to investigate injured and ill patients' experiences of cold exposure and to identify related factors.
METHOD: During January to March 2011, 62 consecutively selected patients were observed when they were cared for by amb

Ambient temperature is a well-established determinant of mortality, yet evidence from temperate continental regions of Central and Southeastern Europe remains limited. Public health attention has largely concentrated on extreme temperature events, notwithstanding growing evidence that non-extreme temperatures may account for a substantial share of temperature-related deaths. We examined the association between daily mean temperature and all-cause mortality in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia, over 2000-2020. Distributed lag non-linear models were used to capture non-linear and dela

Coatings of metal specimens are known to have an impact on hydrogen gettering (hydrogen absorption). The coating can have one or more functions, such as enhancing gettering, preventing gettering and/or preventing oxidation of the metal substrate. It is known that contaminants and surface texture can impact hydrogen gettering/absorption performance, but has not previously been thoroughly explored. This study evaluated the role of different post-plating heat treatments of nickel-plated zircaloy-4 getters (NPGs) and the role of the heat treatments on gettering rates, surface composition and textu

The hypothermic effect of resuscitation solution temperature on epicardial and core temperatures in 15 dogs during hemorrhagic shock was studied. Hemorrhagic shock was induced and dogs were then resuscitated with either body-temperature lactated Ringer's, room-temperature lactated Ringer's, 4 degrees C blood, warmed blood, or cold blood mixed with 50 degrees C lactated Ringer's. There was a significant decrease (p = 0.001) from baseline temperature recordings with the use of room-temperature lactated Ringer's, cold blood, and cold blood mixed with 50 degrees C lactated Ringer's. Baseline tempe
