Morphological Description and Physiological Changes in the Hindgut of Female Asiophrida xanthospilota (Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera) Across Reproductive Stages.

Fecal retention is a distinctive reproductive strategy in certain leaf beetles, which enables females to use accumulated fecal material to protect their eggs and enhance offspring survival. The adult flea beetle Asiophrida xanthospilota (Baly, 1881) is a specialist herbivore that feeds on the leaves of Cotinus coggygria Scop. (Anacardiaceae). Using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and micro-computed tomography, we described and illustrated the hindgut anatomy of adult female A. xanthospilota during the pre-mated and post-mated reproductive phases. We further examined the physiol

Comparative Analysis of Flight Muscle Function in Microinsects Megaphragma viggianii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) and Paratuposa placentis (Coleoptera: Ptiliidae).

The wing structure, kinematics, and aerodynamics of miniature insects differ drastically from those of medium- and large-sized species. However, the structural and functional features of their wing musculature that contribute to these differences remain largely unknown. We analyze flight muscle function in two species of microinsects from different orders. Both employ indirect muscles to power flight, but the ratio of sizes between the two main muscle groups differs fundamentally, and M. viggianii is characterized by a unique hypertrophy of the dorsal longitudinal muscles. In both, aerodynamic

Phylogeography and Population Genetics of the Kentucky Endemic Cave Beetle Genus Neaphaenops Jeannel (1920) (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechini).

Cave beetles are an excellent group for studying evolutionary history and speciation within cave habitats. However, they are underrepresented in such research, particularly in North America, a hotspot of cave biodiversity, where beetles account for a significant proportion of documented taxa. This study aims to elucidate the evolutionary history and possible connectivity or barriers to gene flow among populations of the central Kentucky endemic cave beetle, Neaphaenops tellkampfii (Erichson), and to test the validity of four proposed subspecies. We collected specimens from 62 caves, extracted

Multi-time point transcriptomics and metabolomics reveals toxic responses of imidacloprid exposure in Aquatica leii (Coleoptera: Lampyridae).

Imidacloprid (IMI), a neonicotinoid insecticide, is broadly applied in crop protection during plant growth. However, its strong water solubility and stability allow it to be transported into aquatic systems via rainfall, drainage, spray drift, and other pathways, causing severe damage to aquatic invertebrates. Limited information exists on the physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic mechanisms of IMI toxicity to aquatic fireflies. The present study investigated how multi-time-point acute IMI stress affected physiology, transcription, and metabolism in Aquatica leii, and confirmed the 96-

Diet, predator, and molecular marker properties influence dietary DNA detection in ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) during digestion.

DNA-based gut content analysis is a powerful tool for quantifying predation, yet dietary DNA detectability is influenced by multiple factors. Here, we systematically evaluated the effects of diet, predator traits (species, life stage, and sample type), and molecular marker properties (marker length and type) on dietary DNA detectability in ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), using Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant, 1853 as a representative species alongside other ladybird species. Dietary DNA detectability varied markedly among food types. The 50% detection success (DS50) of Ephestia

Microstructural characteristics and mechanisms underlying dynamic light adaptation in the compound eyes of Exolontha castanea (Coleoptera: Melolonthinae).

Exolontha castanea (Coleoptera: Melolonthinae) larvae are a major subterranean pest of sugarcane in China. The adults exhibit strong flight capacity and positive phototaxis. This study investigated the external morphology, internal microstructure, and light-induced adaptations of the compound eyes in both female and male E. castanea using light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The compound eyes feature a peninsula-shaped canthus that extends deeply into the basement membrane region. A marked sexual size dimorphism of the eye was o

Intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance along elevational gradients: the case of a widespread diving beetle (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae).

Species distributed across wide elevational gradients are likely to experience local thermal adaptation and exhibit high thermal plasticity, as these gradients are characterised by steep environmental changes over short geographic distances (i.e., strong selection differentials). The prevalence of adaptive intraspecific variation in thermal tolerance with elevation remains unclear, however, particularly in freshwater taxa. We explored variation in upper and lower thermal limits and acclimation capacity among Iberian populations of adults of the widespread water beetle Agabus bipustulatus (Dyti

Investment Trade-Off between Mating Behavior and Tonic Immobility in the Sweetpotato Weevil Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Brentidae).

Numerous studies have confirmed that the trade-off between anti-predator behavior and mating behavior occurs in certain insect species. This suggests that insects invest more in anti-predator behavior, and fewer resources or time can be used in mating behavior. However, few studies focus on tonic immobility, an important anti-predator behavior in nature, and different stages in mating behavior. Tonic immobility (TI) is considered to be an important anti-predator behavior. Herein, we investigated the relationship between TI and mating behavior in the sweetpotato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius.

Oviposition preference and life-history parameters of Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on different soybean (Glycine max) cultivars.

BACKGROUND: Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is one of the most destructive pests of stored legume seeds in many regions of the world. Evaluation of varietal resistance of host seeds to C. maculatus infestation can be useful in preventing severe damage. We studied the susceptibility and resistance of eight conventional soybean cultivars (Caspian, Kosar, L17, Nekador, Sari, Tapour, Williams and Zane) based on the oviposition preference (choice and no-choice tests) and population growth parameters of the pest. RESULTS: Compared with other cultivars tested, oviposition p

Identification and Evaluation of Reference Genes for Quantitative PCR Normalization in Alligator Weed Flea Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Stably expressed reference genes are critical internal standards for the quantification of gene transcription levels using quantitative real-time PCR. Housekeeping genes are commonly used as reference genes but their expressions were variable depending on experimental conditions in many insect species studied. Here we report the identification and evaluation of 10 housekeeping genes in alligator weed flea beetle, Agasicles hygrophila Selman & Vogt (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a biocontrol agent of alligator weed. The 10 housekeeping genes are: beta-actin (Actin), ribosomal protein L13A (PRL13a

Colonization of Marginal Host Plants by Seed Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae): Effects of Geographic Source and Genetic Admixture.

The ability to adapt to a novel host plant may vary among insect populations with different genetic histories, and colonization of a marginal host may be facilitated by genetic admixture of disparate populations. We assembled populations of the seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), from four continents, and compared their ability to infest two hosts, lentil and pea. We also formed two cross-continent hybrids (Africa × N.A. and Africa × S.A.). In pre-selection assays, survival was only ~3% in lentil and ~40% in pea. For three replicate populations per line, colonization success on lentil

The Effect of Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Water Deficit on Maize Performance Under Controlled Conditions.

The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, is the most important insect of maize, Zea mays L., but knowledge of its interaction with water deficit on maize production is lacking. A series of greenhouse experiments using three infestation levels of the western corn rootworm, D. virgifera virgifera, under well-watered, moderately dry, and very dry soil moisture levels were conducted to quantify the interaction of western corn rootworm and soil water deficit on B73×Mo17 maize growth and physiology. Three separate experiments were conducted. Soil moisture regimes were initi

Evaluation of mass trapping and mating disruption for managing Prionus californicus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in hop production yards.

Larvae of Prionus californicus Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) feed on the roots of many types of woody perennial crops and are serious pests of hop in the northwestern United States. The adult males are strongly attracted to a volatile sex pheromone, (3R,5S)-3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid, that is produced by females. Here, we summarize the results of field experiments that evaluated the potential for using the synthetic pheromone (in a blend of all four possible stereoisomers) to manage infestations of P. californicus in commercial hop yards by mass trapping or mating disruption. Olfactory and visual responses of the longlegged chafer Hoplia spectabilis Medvedev (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in Qinghai Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring traps and control methods are needed for the long-legged chafer, Hoplia spectabilis Medvedev, which has recently reached outbreak numbers in pastureland of Qinghai Province, China. RESULTS: Field trapping experiments, using cross-pane funnel (barrier) traps, showed that H. spectabilis adults were not significantly attracted to branches of the host plant Dasiphora fructicosa (L.) Rydb. However, beetles were slightly attracted to similar host plant branches infested by conspecific beetles, possibly owing to weakly attractive volatiles, primarily (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, rel

Incidence of turf-damaging white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and associated pathogens and parasitoids on Kentucky golf courses.

Root-feeding grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were sampled from damaged areas of 61 irrigated roughs on 32 Kentucky golf courses to determine species composition and natural enemy incidence, the first such survey in the United States' transitional turfgrass climatic zone. Masked chafers (Cyclocephala lurida Bland and C. borealis Arrow) and Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman) accounted for ≈73 and 26% of grubs found in an autumn survey, with Cyclocephala spp. predominating at most sites, although mixed infestations were common. Only a few Phyllophaga spp., and no exotic species other tha

Residual effects of imidacloprid on Japanese beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) oviposition, egg hatch, and larval viability in turfgrass.

Preventive control of turf-infesting scarabaeid grubs by neonicotinoid insecticides is presumed to mainly result from residues killing first instars in the soil. The extent to which sublethal behavioral effects or intoxication of other life stages contribute to such control is poorly known. We tested whether Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman, females lay fewer eggs in turf treated with imidacloprid (Merit 75 WP) or an imidacloprid-bifenthrin combination (Allectus GC SC), and whether exposure to those residues in thatch and soil reduces their survival and subsequent ability to feed or t

Morphology of the midgut and hindgut and pollen-feeding ecology of Eulasia arctos anatolica (Reitter, 1903) (Coleoptera: Glaphyridae).

This study aims to investigate the morphological structure of the midgut and hindgut of Eulasia arctos anatolica (Reitter, 1903) and to reveal, for the first time, the relationship between the pollen grains found in the digestive system and the feeding of E. arctos anatolica. According to the results obtained, the longest section of the digestive system of E. arctos anatolica, the midgut, has a single layer of columnar epithelial cells with a striated border and secretory vesicles, indicating apocrine secretion. Regenerative cells were found at the base of epithelial folds, and Scrophulariacea

A taxonomic note on Chinese species of the Neolucanus fuscus group with the description of a new species (Coleoptera: Lucanidae: Lucaninae).

In this paper, we describe a new stag beetle species from Yunnan, China, i.e., Neolucanus horizontalis Xin, Zhong & Qi, new species which exhibits significant structural differences in mandible, labial vestiture, protibia and male genitalia compared to related species. We also provide redescription of the male of N. fuscus Didier, 1926 and N. brochieri Bomans & Miyashita, 1997. Neolucans fuscus zhongguo Schenk, 2012 is synonymized with N. fuscus fuscus Didier, 1926. We also present a distribution map and an identification key for the telodont males of the N. fuscus group. Four New Species of Haplocauda, with Notes on the Evolutionary Convergence of Copulation Clamps in Lucidotini (Coleoptera: Lampyridae: Lampyrinae).

Lampyrinae Lucidotini contains nearly a third of the world's Lampyridae. The lack of revisions and the overlap of diagnostic features across taxonomic levels have hindered identification and, therefore, further studies of Lucidotini taxa. The use of terminalia and genital traits in Lucidotini phylogenies has been fundamental to inform and update the genus-level delimitations in this group. One important open question is whether the presence of increased-length abdominal segment VIII (in relation to segment VII) in the closely related genera Scissicauda and Haplocauda is synapomorphic or homopl
