The Hillside journal of clinical psychiatry1989eng
The authors conducted a systematic investigation of nightmares in consecutive admissions to an inpatient unit at a Veteran Administration hospital for a six-month period. Fifteen of the 41 nightmare sufferers identified their nightmares as post-traumatic. Examination of the nightmares in the light of family histories revealed that familial dysfunction from many points in the nightmare sufferers' life histories found clear-cut representation in the nightmare scenario. In this sample, post-traumatic nightmares dealt not only with the identified trauma, but also with a lifelong continuum of famil

IMPORTANCE: Combat places soldiers at risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The excessive rates of PTSD and other adjustment disorders in soldiers returning home make it imperative to identify risk and resilience factors that could be targeted by novel therapeutic treatments.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the interplay among attention to threat, combat exposure, and other risk factors for PTSD symptoms in soldiers deployed to combat.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Longitudinal prospective study of Israeli Defense Force infantry soldiers carried out in 2008 through 2010. Repeated measurements durin

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to potentially traumatic events during military service is associated with mental health problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms. However, knowledge regarding the implications of maladaptive personality traits in psychopathology among female veterans is sparse. The present study aims to use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition-an alternative model of personality disorder, to examine associations between maladaptive personality traits, PTSD and depression symptoms, among female Israeli veterans.

War as an unpleasant and stressful phenomenon could be the cause of psychiatric disorders. This study aims to collect and compare conducted research to estimate the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in combatants, veterans, and freed soldiers of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war. This study is a case review study in which articles were found using keywords, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), veterans, combatants, captive, soldiers and war in domestic and foreign databases, personal archives, libraries of Iran and Tehran Universities of Medical Sciences and the National Li

The English electrophysiologist Edgar Adrian (1889-1977) was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for physiology in 1932 for his research on the functions of neurons. During World War I, at Queen Square in London, he devised an intensive electrotherapeutic treatment for shell-shocked soldiers. The procedure, developed with Lewis Yealland (1884-1954), was similar to "torpillage," the faradic psychotherapy used in France. Adrian and Yealland considered that the pain accompanying the use of faradic current was necessary for both therapeutic and disciplinary reasons, especially because of the suspicio

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Involvement in wartime combat often conveys a number of deleterious outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, hostility, aggression, and suicidal ideation. Less studied is the effect of engagement in wartime atrocities, including witnessing and perpetrating abusive violence.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This study employed path analysis to examine the direct effects of involvement in wartime atrocities on hostility, aggression, depression, and suicidal ideation independent of combat exposure, as well as the indirect effects via guilt and PTSD symp

During the First World War the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic, in Queen Square, London, then Britain's leading centre for neurology, took a key role in the treatment and understanding of shell shock. This paper explores the case notes of all 462 servicemen who were admitted with functional neurological disorders between 1914 and 1919. Many of these were severe or chronic cases referred to the National Hospital because of its acknowledged expertise and the resources it could call upon. Biographical data was collected together with accounts of the patient's military experience

"Forward psychiatry" was devised in World War I for the treatment of shell shock and today is the standard intervention for combat stress reaction. It relied on three principles: proximity to battle, immediacy, and expectation of recovery, subsequently given the acronym "PIE." Both US and UK forces belatedly reintroduced PIE methods during World War II to return servicemen to active duty and made confident claims for its efficacy. Advanced treatment units also appeared to have minimized psychiatric battle casualties during Korean and Vietnamese Wars. Evaluations of its use by Israeli forces in

Memories and perceptions of exposure to radiation were explored in open-ended interviews with 16 atomic veterans. Findings suggest that resolution of these events involves emotional and cognitive processing of a new perspective that is in contradiction with prior beliefs.

Despite the fact that there are over 11 million World War II veterans in the United States, recent research on combat-related trauma has focused primarily on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam veterans. Several studies have found that the majority of Vietnam veterans who meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, ed 3 (DSM-III) criteria for PTSD have an additional major psychiatric diagnosis. This study explores the presence of the diagnosis of PTSD in an inpatient sample of 42 World War II veterans with an admission diagnosis other than PTSD. Foll

Although documentation that war inflicts psychological casualties dates back to the American Civil War and earlier, most research began after the Vietnam conflict, when studies focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, there has been significant research to illuminate the epidemiology of war-related psychological casualties. Significant findings include an appreciation for the role combat plays in the development of mental disorders, including PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent research has endeavoured to understand and improve

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder, combat injury, and headache in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.
BACKGROUND: Previous investigations suggest that a relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder and primary headache disorders exists and could be complicated by the contribution of physical injury, especially one that results in loss of consciousness. These associations have not been systematically examined in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Military veterans who were injured in combat very often report pain along with co-occurring perceived stress and preexisting depressive disorder. The systems model of pain is a theoretical model suggesting that pain and perceived stress are bidirectionally associated at the within-person level, and associations are heightened among those with depressive disorder. However, the systems model of pain has not been adequately tested. Testing the systems model of pain could illuminate salient treatment targets for combat-injured veterans with pain and co-occurring psychological problems.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported psychiatric status of Australian Vietnam war veterans was determined 20-25 years after the war and its relation to combat was investigated.
METHOD: A simple random sample of Australian Army Vietnam veterans was interviewed nationally using standardized interviews and self-completion tests to assess the prevalence of lifetime and current psychiatric illness and its relationship to combat. Army records were used to extract data on the cohort for use in regression-based adjustment for non-response.
RESULTS: The conditions mainly affecting the Australian veterans were a

Given the high degree of diagnostic overlap and limited empirical literature surrounding the comorbidity between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), appropriately conceptualizing the relationship between the comorbid symptoms and their impact on the treatment process can be challenging. This is especially true when the symptoms of the two disorders become functionally connected, with each symptom set maintaining the other. This article details the case of a veteran with comorbid PTSD and OCD who sought intensive trauma-focused treatment within the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: Atrophic acne scars impose a significant physical and psychological burden. Fractional CO2 laser treatment is hindered by delayed healing and pigmentation. Exosome-mimetic nanovesicles (EMNV) may optimise outcomes through increasing collagen remodelling, accelerating the healing process, and inhibiting inflammation.
AIM: The aim to the study was to assess combination therapy (CO2 laser + topical exosome-mimetic nanovesicles (EMNV) and polynucleotide) vs. CO2 laser monotherapy on clinical and patient-centred outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comparative randomised study assessed

BACKGROUND: Research among military personnel and veterans indicates that subjective appraisal of warzone stressors explains the relation of combat exposure to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but not the relation of exposure to injury and death to PTSD. Studies have primarily been limited to conventional forces using aggregate measures of warzone stressor exposure. Threat appraisal may play a different role in the emergence of PTSD among military personnel for whom dangerous deployment experiences are more closely associated with exposure to injury and death, such as US Air Force Parares

A significant proportion of military personnel deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) has been exposed to war-zone events potentially associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There has been significant controversy regarding healthcare policy for those service members and military veterans who returned from OEF/OIF deployments with both mild TBI and PTSD. There is currently little empirical evidence available to address these controversies. This review uses a cognitive neuroscience framework to addr

In this review we trace the history of and professional discussion on psychological traumatization due to "railroad spine syndrome," "shell-shock syndrome," and "war neuroses," as well as the more or less endemic "posttraumatic stress disorder" of today. Psychological trauma engenders longlasting consequences in the biological, intrapsychic, and social organization of individuals. Medical experts have reported a shift in attention from exogenous to endogenous and back to exogenous causes, as indicated by new diagnostic systems (DSM-IV and ICD-10). As far as the relevant literature is concerned
