Breaking community barriers to polio vaccination in Northern Nigeria: the impact of a grass roots mobilization campaign (Majigi).

This paper examines the impact of a community-based intervention on the trends in the uptake of polio vaccination following a community mobilization campaign for polio eradication in northern Nigeria. Uptake of polio vaccination in high-risk communities in this region has been considerably low despite routine and supplemental vaccination activities. Large numbers of children are left unvaccinated because of community misconceptions and distrust regarding the cause of the disease and the safety of the polio vaccine. The Majigi polio campaign was initiated in 2008 as a pilot trial in Gezawa, a l

A COM-B and Theoretical Domains Framework Mapping of the Barriers and Facilitators to Effective Communication and Help-Seeking Among People With, or Seeking a Diagnosis Of, Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue resembling the endometrium grows outside the womb, causing severe chronic pain. People with endometriosis report difficulty in help-seeking and communicating with healthcare professionals, contributing to diagnosis delays and ineffective management. The present study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to effective communication using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and COM-B model to inform behavior change intervention development. This study was a qualitative semi-structured interview and open-ended survey design. Thematic

The degree of polymerization influences the effects of pectic oligosaccharide on intestinal histomorphology, barrier function and microbial community structure in broilers.

This study aimed to investigate whether the degree of polymerization (DP) influences intestinal health benefits of pectic oligosaccharide (POS) in broilers. A total of 360 one-day-old female Huanghua yellow-feathered broilers were randomly allocated into 3 groups (10 replicates/group), which received a basal diet alone or supplemented with 600 mg/kg low‑DP (DP = 10) POS (LPOS) or 600 mg/kg high‑DP (DP = 17) POS (HPOS) over a 21‑day experimental period. The results showed that supplemental LPOS and HPOS tended to reduce (P = 0.081) average daily feed intake, but tended to increase (P < 0.10) re

Incomplete Patient Medication Histories Pose a Significant Barrier to Finding the Best Treatment Choices in Outpatient Community Care.

When physicians consult patients with chronic conditions, they often need to make treatment decisions. Pharmacological strategies are based on different sources, including complete medication histories. However, a physician's access to a patient's medication history is usually limited to current medications and known allergies. This editorial examines gaps in outpatient medication documentation and argues for systematic improvements in how medication response data are collected and shared. We propose adding medication-related information to a patient's medical records that would facilitate det

[Physical activity promotion among older adults in community settings: structures, implementation barriers and the role of political narratives].

Physical activity is one of the most effective measures for preventing non-communicable diseases and for maintaining independence and quality of life in older age. Current data indicate that the majority of adults in Germany aged 65 and older do not meet recommended levels of physical activity. Against this background, the article discusses why effective interventions should not focus solely on individual behaviour but also address the settings in which older adults live.Within Germany's federal system, a variety of structures for promoting physical activity exist at both federal and state lev

Barriers to clinical implementation for novel therapies and biomarker testing in the community practice oncology setting: A CLDN18.2 case study.

PURPOSE: Community-based practices often experience extended adoption times when implementing novel targeted agents, due to practical barriers. Delayed implementation of new therapies can potentially increase patient burden. This study aimed to objectively identify and quantify practice challenges to the implementation of new therapies in the community setting. METHODS: In this pilot study, challenges associated with zolbetuximab, a potential first-in-class claudin 18.2 (CLDN18.2) monoclonal antibody and companion diagnostic, was assessed. Between April and August 2024, 53 data-collection eve

Facilitators, barriers, and strategies for optimizing engagement in recovery community centers among sexual minority people in the U.S. Northeast.

BACKGROUND: In the U.S., sexual minority (SM; lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other non-heterosexual) individuals experience disproportionate substance use disorder (SUD) disparities and encounter barriers to affirming treatment and recovery services. Recovery community centers (RCCs) offer peer-led and community-driven programs with prior research suggesting that RCCs may address these gaps, yet SM experiences within RCCs are underexplored. METHODS: The current study conducted semi-structured, one-on-one interviews with SM adults (n = 21) engaged with RCCs and other recovery services in t

"We are not sick, so why take medicine?" Community perspectives on barriers, facilitators, and implementation strategies for IPTsc in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent preventive treatment for school-aged children (IPTsc) is a newly recommended malaria chemoprevention strategy targeting populations that increasingly sustain malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. Ghana recently added IPTsc into its national malaria strategy, yet evidence on community acceptability and implementation strategies in non-trial settings remains limited. This study explored perceived barriers, facilitators, and preferred implementation strategies for IPTsc in a high-transmission district in Ghana. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducte

Barriers to COVID-19 vaccinations and moral struggle among nurses in a Chinese community: A critical medical anthropology analysis.

BACKGROUND: Past studies have shown that people are less inclined to get vaccinated when healthcare providers are hesitant about the immunisation. Nurses have been documented as the most hesitant healthcare group towards COVID-19 vaccination in both Western and Chinese communities. This study investigates the perceptions of COVID-19 vaccines among nurses in a Chinese society and the reasons contributing to their high hesitancy. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach was used, involving in-depth semi-structured interviews from September to December 2022 with 35 nurses in Hong Kong who did

Barriers and facilitators to integrating tuberculosis treatment into community pharmacies for people with TB/HIV in Kampala, Uganda: A qualitative study.

Community pharmacies (private retail drug shops or pharmacies) have proven successful for delivering anti-retroviral therapy to people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Leveraging this model for tuberculosis (TB) treatment integration could improve access to both TB and HIV treatment among people with TB/HIV. We identified the barriers and facilitators to integrating TB treatment into community pharmacies for people with TB/HIV in Kampala, Uganda, using a qualitative study across six public health facilities. Participants included people with TB/HIV; healthcare providers (HCPs) f

PrEP Use Among Black Transgender Women: A Qualitative Study on Barriers to PrEP Use and the Power and Promise of Community.

Black transgender women (TW) have disproportionately low uptake and use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), despite high vulnerability to HIV. Community and peer support may be important intervention targets to improve PrEP use among Black TW. We conducted qualitative interviews with 42 Black TW in the midwestern United States to understand Black TW's experiences with PrEP and explore barriers to PrEP use and the ways peers and Black trans communities may support PrEP use. Using inductive thematic analysis, we identified three primary themes. First, many Black TW see themselves as PrEP adv

Barriers to Oral PrEP: A Qualitative Study of Female Sex Workers, PrEP Prescribers, Policymakers, and Community Advocates in Morocco.

In 2017, Morocco became the first Arab country to incorporate pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in its HIV-prevention program. Yet no research has been published on PrEP from Morocco. Although female sex workers are one of the target populations of PrEP in Morocco, their enrollment in PrEP is lower than men who have sex with men. In this study, we conducted 38 semi-structured interviews with female sex workers, physicians who prescribe PrEP, policymakers, and community advocates to identify problems associated with access to and use of PrEP. We also investigated preferences for daily oral, vagin

Barriers to access to hepatitis C treatment with direct-acting antivirals in people who inject drugs in the community setting.

Barriers to access to hepatitis C treatment with direct-acting antivirals in people who inject drugs in the community setting. Qualitative study with prison population. Hepatitis C (HCV) treatments with direct-acting antiviral therapy (DAA) are an easy and effective option among people who inject drugs (PWID). However, difficulties in accessing and monitoring treatment in community services and dropouts on release from prison are detected among PWID. For this reason, the aim of the study is to know the access barriers in the diagnosis and treatment of HCV in community health services. An explo

Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of screening and intervention for co-use of opioid medications and alcohol among community pharmacy patients.

INTRODUCTION: A significant risk for overdose among patients prescribed opioid medications is co-use of alcohol. Community pharmacies are underutilized as a resource to prevent and address co-use. The barriers and facilitators that promote or impede the adoption of universal alcohol screening and intervention at point of opioid medication dispensing are unknown. We assessed community pharmacy leaders, pharmacists, and technician's perceptions towards the implementation of a pharmacy-based screening/intervention for the co-use of opioids and alcohol among patients. METHODS: We conducted a mult

Barriers and bridges on water management in rural Mexico: from water-quality monitoring to water management at the community level.

Access to sufficient water of suitable quality represents a challenge for achieving several dimensions of sustainable development. Currently, water access is restricted to three of 10 persons globally. In rural areas of Mexico and other low-income countries, coverage could be even less due to the absence of formal supply; thus, rural communities usually perform water management. Surrounding community-based water management, various socio-ecological interactions emerge that determine access to water. Access to water will depend on the obstacles or capacities that arise within the socio-ecologic

Integrating Rapid Diabetes Screening Into a Latinx Focused Community-Based Low-Barrier COVID-19 Testing Program.

IMPORTANCE: Community-based COVID-19 testing and vaccination programs play a crucial role in mitigating racial and ethnic disparities in COVID-19 service delivery. They also represent a platform that can be leveraged to expand access to testing for chronic diseases, including diabetes, that disproportionately affect the Latinx community and other marginalized communities. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes associated with a diabetes testing strategy designed to reach low-income Latinx persons by leveraging COVID-19 testing infrastructure and community trust developed during the COVID-19 pandemic
