Can Viewing Modality Affect Frontal Mandibular Bone Height Measurement? A Comparison Between 3D Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine Viewer and Printed Portable Document Format Cone Beam Computer Tomography Reports.

Objectives: Buccal cortical bone dimensions are crucial in dental radiology, as they impact orthodontic treatment outcomes. Changes in alveolar bone dimensions can result in malocclusion and require interdisciplinary approaches for correction. The accurate quantification of buccal bone dimensions is crucial for appropriate treatment planning and avoiding medico-legal issues. This study aimed to compare buccal bone height measurements between three-dimensional (3D) digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) data and portable document format (PDF) cone beam computer topography report

Diagnosis, management and prevalence estimation of gonorrhoea: influences of Aptima Combo 2 assay with alternative target confirmation.

Case-notes and laboratory data were retrospectively reviewed for influences of dual testing by Aptima Combo 2 (AC2) for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) on the diagnosis, management and prevalence estimation of gonorrhoea in the genitourinary (GU) medicine clinic and community. NG positives by AC2 were confirmed by Aptima Gonococcus assay. Unconfirmed positives were rare. Our study showed that in the GU medicine clinic, AC2 detected about 20% extra cases of NG beyond culture. For best standard of care, NG culture and microscopy are still required in some patients to en

A quick win for neighbourhood working in England: the Lindsay Leg Club Model delivering for local populations.

The NHS 10-year plan re-emphasises the long-standing policy aspiration for population and place-based approaches to health improvement. The Fit for the Future: 10 Year Health Plan sets out a neighbourhood health service as the practical mechanism for shifting care from hospital to community and from sickness to prevention. There is a gap between known evidence-based approaches to health improvement in community settings and local adoption in service delivery. One of the most underserved populations in any neighbourhood will be those affected by a lower limb condition, people with these conditi

Assessing community resilience during the first COVID-19 wave peak in a megacity in eastern China: a cross-sectional study using social media data.

OBJECTIVES: In the face of pandemics resulting from infectious disease, improving community resilience has become increasingly vital. China's sudden exit from Zero-COVID policy in December 2022 triggered a surge in COVID-19 cases, compounded by medication shortages due to earlier restrictions, creating a public health crisis. This study assesses community resilience during the first post-Zero-COVID infection wave (8 December 2022 to 7 January 2023), focusing on adaptation mechanisms, resource mobilisation, protective behaviours and medicine access, using real-time social media data to capture

Effective Communication through Narrative.

Communication is foundational to clinical and leadership excellence. In patient care, listening, empathy, and trust prevent errors. In complex health systems, leaders who move beyond data transmission, toward creating a cohesive narrative, help teams unite around purpose. Drawing on cognitive science and organizational theory, this article positions storytelling as a core leadership tool that connects metrics to lived experience, mobilizes action, and humanizes policy.

Communication in Neglected Tropical Diseases' elimination: A scoping review and call for action.

BACKGROUND: Although the practice of communication is often called upon when intervening and involving communities affected by NTDs, the disciplinary framework of health communication research has been largely absent from NTD strategies. To illustrate how practices conceptualized and developed within the communication field have been applied in the context of NTD elimination, we conducted a scoping review focusing on two diseases currently targeted for elimination by the WHO: lymphatic filariasis and Chagas disease. METHODS: We examined studies published between 2012 and 2020 in five electron

Finding Comfort in Discomfort… Reflecting on Stories Told.

INTRODUCTION: The 2022 Presidential Address for the Association for Academic Surgery was focused on better understanding the personal and professional challenges faced by surgeons during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: As part of this work, we embarked on a listening tour, inviting surgeons from all over the country to tell us their stories. This led to forming a panel of five selected participants based on how their stories crosscut many of the most prevalent themes during those conversations. Here, we present thematic excerpts of the 2022 presidential panel, intending to capture that moment

How Academic Medicine Can Amplify Truth Amid the Noise of Misinformation, Inaccuracies, and Lies.

Inaccurate statements and lies from public figures and political and government leaders have the power to exacerbate dangerous upheavals in our political, health care, and social environments. The widespread misinformation, inaccuracies, and lies about the COVID-19 pandemic (about the origin of the virus, the severity of illness, vaccination, and "cures," to name a few) illustrate the potentially disastrous consequences of false information. Academic medicine must recognize the dangers of such lies and inaccuracies, particularly those related to health, and must understand their sources in tra

Health education to promote community involvement in the control of tropical diseases.

Health Education is any combination of learning activities that promote voluntary adaptations in health-related behaviour. In pursuing this definition, health workers generally work in two main directions, a community development approach and a behavioristic, communications approach. While Health Education in tropical, developing countries often takes the developmental approach with full community involvement, including the setting of programme priorities, Health Education for disease control has more often been characterized as the behavioristic mode utilizing simplistic, professionally deter

Systematic review to inform the development of a community pharmacy-based intervention for people affected by dementia.

OBJECTIVES: People living with dementia (PWD) frequently receive medicine regularly from their community pharmacy, thus providing an opportunity to address either directly or through a carer any unmet medicine-related needs. The aim of this systematic review was to identify, describe, and evaluate the quality of the research for dementia-specific pharmacy-based interventions with potential for delivery through community pharmacy. This would inform the design of future services and associated trials. KEY FINDINGS: The systematic review process identified 29 studies. Interventions were categori

Caring for the community: the role of partnerships.

While many members of the public are deeply interested in and supportive of the three traditional missions of academic medicine--education, research, and clinical care, they also want to know what academic health centers (AHCs) are doing to improve the overall health of their communities. Much is already being done toward this goal, but improving communities' health in a measurable way requires a far broader agenda. AHCs must bring together the approaches of medicine and public health, and need to partner with many other players. This agenda must proceed despite all the other challenges that A

Community-acquired acute kidney injury in tropical countries.

Community-acquired acute kidney injury (AKI) in developing tropical countries is markedly different from AKI in developed countries with a temperate climate, which exemplifies the influence that environment can have on the epidemiology of human diseases. The aetiology and presentation of AKI reflect the ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, climatic and ecological characteristics in tropical countries. Tropical zones are characterized by high year-round temperatures and the absence of frost, which supports the propagation of infections that can cause AKI, including malaria, leptospirosis, HIV and

Finding cases of Trichomonas vaginalis infection in England.

We describe the use of a new molecular assay for Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), the Gen-Probe Aptima TV (ATV) in female attendees at community clinics, a genitourinary (GU) medicine clinic and a prison GU medicine service. Positivity rates at community clinics and GU medicine were 0/382 (0%) and 3/358 (0.8%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0-1.7%), respectively. Positivity was significantly higher, 29/269 (10.8%, 95% CI 7.1-14.5%), odds ratio (OR) 14.3 (4.11 < OR < 59.55), in those tested at the prison. A questionnaire survey of English GU medicine clinics and data from the UK Health Protection Agen

Personalised medicine: a healing application within comorbid PTSD and mTBI military patient sample with a particular focus on special operators.

Personalised medicine is replacing prototypical medical care. Personalised medicine focuses on enhancing patients' functioning and preventing future negative impacts of both medical disease and psychological disorders, and unfolds uniquely for each individual. The military special forces community is a group at higher risk for physical trauma, for example, traumatic brain injuries, as well as psychosocial stressors and traumas associated with combat, high operational tempos and sleep deprivation. From a system's cost-benefit perspective and resonating with community norms of resiliency, person

Guidance on communication and informed consent with patients and their families for experimental individualized treatments.

With advanced tools and techniques, it is now possible to genetically diagnose an increasing number of individuals with rare diseases for which no disease-modifying treatment exists. For a subset of affected individuals, it is possible to develop individualized interventions to modulate and/or correct the underlying genetic defect. Communicating to such individuals and their guardians about the potential risks and benefits of such experimental therapies poses special challenges. In addition to typical procedures used for consenting subjects of clinical trials or off-label therapy, individualiz
