A program for women with schizophrenia that combines inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services is described. The program was established at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto in 1995. Services include a comprehensive patient and family assessment, with subsequent recommendations to the treating clinician about differential diagnosis, psychopharmacologic and psychosocial treatments, and patient management during pregnancy and early parenthood. Other components of the program are home-based outreach services, substance abuse counseling, instruction of new mothers

After the "Polyclinic system" that had predominated in the GDR had been dismantled, a far-reaching restructuring of the complementary psychiatric care sector became necessary. In the State of Saxony, comprehensive establishment of a homogeneous home-visit outpatient service is the first building block in an interlinked system of regionalized community psychiatry. Based on about 20 years of experience in the Federal States of the FRG, this function is fulfilled by social psychiatry services (SPS). The present study investigates the expectations of free-practising psychiatrists (n = 165), doctor

BACKGROUND: Over seven million persons in the United States are supervised by the criminal justice system, including many who have co-occurring mental and substance use disorders (CODs). This population is at high risk for recidivism and presents numerous challenges to those working in the justice system.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a contemporary review of the existing research and examine key issues and evidence-based treatment and supervision practices related to CODs in the justice system.
METHODS: We reviewed COD research involving offenders that has been conducted over the past 20 years and

Forensic interviews with children for suspected child sexual abuse require meeting children "where they are" in terms of their developmental level, readiness to disclose, culture, and language. The field lacks research indicating how to accommodate children's diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This article focuses on language competence, defined here as the ability of an organization and its personnel (in this case, Child Advocacy Centers and forensic interviewers) to communicate effectively with clients regardless of their preferred language(s). In this qualitative study, 39 U.S. ch

The recent influx of refugees and asylum seekers into Germany poses a challenge for the national healthcare system. In compliance with the present Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, the national healthcare system can be expected to have 1.5 million new members by early 2017. Providing adequate care particularly for people with mental illnesses or disorders will represent an immense challenge for all actors in the system. The circumstances of the flight combined with the foreign linguistic and socio-cultural background increase the severity of the cases and the difficulties of treatment. No procedure

Any health professional working with children and young people may become involved in the care of a child or young person with an eating disorder. Morbidity and mortality can be high, and paediatricians have an important role to play. There are broadly two aspects of underweight that the paediatrician may face - acute medical instability and a more chronic underweight which can impact greatly upon growth and development. Ultimate weight restoration means an adequate nutritional status to allow appropriate growth and development. Key to success is a team approach with paediatric and mental heal

Media coverage of psychiatric issues will reflect or influence public perceptions of the mentally ill. In order to explore the relationship between psychiatry and the media, an attitudinal questionnaire was administered to a systematic sample of 20 reporters, 20 psychiatrists, 20 medical outpatients with no psychiatric history, and 40 psychiatric inpatients. In addition, 4 psychiatric patients who had personal experience with media coverage were interviewed to determine the impact. Their stories are presented as clinical vignettes. The results of the questionnaire survey show that media report

A sizable number of youth at risk for psychiatric disabilities enter the juvenile justice system each year without sufficient screening mechanisms or treatment systems. In 1977 the children and youth division of a mental health center began a program of evaluation, treatment, and consultation for juveniles in the subsystem of probation, secure and nonsecure detention centers, urban group homes, and other postadjudication residential facilities. One of the major benefits--a central and coordinated response to youth identified as having significant emotional problems--stems from the opportunitie

The US psychologist Gail Hornstein's monograph, Agnes's Jacket: A Psychologist's Search for the Meanings of Madness (2009), is an important intervention in the identity politics of the mad movement. Hornstein offers a resignified vision of mad identity that embroiders the central trope of an "anti-colonial" struggle to reclaim the experiential world "colonized" by psychiatry. A series of literal and figurative appeals makes recourse to the inner world and (corresponding) cultural world of the mad as well as to the ethno-symbolic cultural materials of dormant nationhood. This rhetoric is augmen

Individuals with severe mental illness frequently have difficulties in obtaining and maintaining adequate accommodation. If they are not willing or able to adapt to requirements of traditional supported housing institutions they may live in sheltered and emergency accommodation. Adequate mental health services are rarely available in these facilities. The aim of the present study was to evaluate mental health, functional and social status of individuals living in community sheltered housing facilities. A cross-sectional survey of n=338 individuals in sheltered housing compared to a sample of p

BACKGROUND: Although isolation precautions are an important aspect of hospital infection control, current rates of isolation in a pediatric hospital and rates of compliance with established precautions are unknown. We therefore initiated hospital-wide point prevalence studies to determine unit-specific rates of patient isolation and compliance with proper isolation requirements focusing on communication of isolation status and availability of personal protective equipment. In this report, we present data from the first 14 months of the study.
METHODS: This was a prospective observational stud

A 59-year-old man presented to the emergency department (ED) with the chief complaint of "panic attacks." In total, he was evaluated by 14 faculty physicians, 2 fellows, and 16 residents from emergency medicine, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, and internal medicine. These multiple transitions were responsible, in part, for the perpetuation of a failure to accurately diagnose the patient's underlying medical illness. The case illustrates the discontinuity of care that occurs at transitions, which may threaten the safety and quality of patient care. Considerable effort must be directed at mak

Marginalized populations face significant barriers to mental health care, such as stigma, poverty, and limited access to adapted services, with conventional psychiatric approaches often falling short. This study aimed to explore how psychiatric care can be adapted to better meet the needs of vulnerable populations. Data were collected from psychiatry residents, psychiatrists, and community organization staff during a course on vulnerable populations, using semi-structured discussions and analyzed through grounded theory with iterative coding. Seven main themes emerged: (1) barriers and needs o

In an era marked by recurring large-scale disasters, whether political, man-made, or natural, the mental health community is increasingly confronted with the challenge of dual identity: the caregiver as survivor. At the 2025 PreAct Conference, the panel titled "From Helper to Survivor and Back: Do's and Don'ts from Professionals Who Endured Mass Trauma" brought together three seasoned professionals who offered raw, personal accounts of surviving mass trauma while maintaining their roles as mental health clinicians. Together, their experiences formed a powerful narrative of vulnerability, resil
