Development of 1500-m Pacing Behavior in Junior Speed Skaters: A Longitudinal Study.

PURPOSE: To provide insight on the development of pacing behavior in junior speed skaters and analyze possible differences between elite, subelite, and nonelite juniors. METHODS: Season-best times (SBTs) in the 1500-m and corresponding pacing behavior were obtained longitudinally for 104 Dutch male speed skaters at age 13-14 (U15), 15-16 (U17), and 17-18 (U19) y. Based on their U19 SBT, skaters were divided into elite (n = 17), subelite (n = 64), and nonelite (n = 23) groups. Pacing behavior was analyzed using the 0- to 300-m, 300- to 700-m, 700- to 1100-m, and 1100- to 1500-m times, expresse

Pacing Behavior and Tactical Positioning in 1500-m Short-Track Speed Skating.

PURPOSE: To gain more insight in pacing behavior and tactical positioning in 1500-m short-track speed skating, a sport in which several athletes directly compete in the same race. METHODS: Lap times and intermediate rankings of elite 1500-m short-track- skating competitors were collected over the season 2012-13 (N = 510, 85 races). Two statistical approaches were used to assess pacing behavior and tactical positioning. First, lap times were analyzed using a MANOVA, and for each lap differences between sex, race type, final rankings, and stage of competition were determined. Second, Kendall ta

Race Factors Affecting Performance Times in Elite Long-Track Speed Skating.

UNLABELLED: Analysis of sport performance can provide effects of environmental and other venue-specific factors in addition to estimates of within-athlete variability between competitions, which determines smallest worthwhile effects. PURPOSE: To analyze elite long-track speed-skating events. METHODS: Log-transformed performance times were analyzed with a mixed linear model that estimated percentage mean effects for altitude, barometric pressure, type of rink, and competition importance. In addition, coefficients of variation representing residual venue-related differences and within-athlete

The Miandad effect reconsidered: analysis of Pakistan's cricket performance 1952 to 2005.

In 2004 Abbasi and Khan reported an enduring influence of a 1986 Pakistani landmark victory in cricket over India on subsequent matches up to 2003. The present study reconsidered the significance and the specificity of this phenomenon, denoted as the "Miandad effect." All 659 Pakistani cricket encounters with India and other frequently played opponents up to 2005 which yielded a winning team were included in the analysis. The increase in matches won by Pakistan over India in the post-1986 period was statistically not significant. Changes in match performance against other frequently played nat

[Dispersion of Biomphalaria straminea in the State of Sergipe: a comparative study within an interval of 19 years].

The aim of the current paper was to study in the state of Sergipe the population distribution and interactions between two species of Biomphalaria, the snail vectors of Schistosoma mansoni in the northeastern Brazil. Data collected in 1969 showed that B. straminea, with only one exception, was limited to the semi-dry region, while B. glabrata was found to live exclusively in the forest region, both in the state of Sergipe. This spatial distribution seemed to suggest that the above Biomphalaria species used to dominate specific territories. Snail collections made in 1988 in the same 37 places s

Does competition really bring out the worst? Testosterone, social distance and inter-male competition shape parochial altruism in human males.

Parochial altruism, defined as increased ingroup favoritism and heightened outgroup hostility, is a widespread feature of human societies that affects altruistic cooperation and punishment behavior, particularly in intergroup conflicts. Humans tend to protect fellow group members and fight against outsiders, even at substantial costs for themselves. Testosterone modulates responses to competition and social threat, but its exact role in the context of parochial altruism remains controversial. Here, we investigated how testosterone influences altruistic punishment tendencies in the presence of

Fluctuating asymmetry, sociosexuality, and intrasexual competitive tactics.

Heterosexual men and women were told they were competing with another same-sex individual for a date with an attractive opposite-sex interviewer. After answering 6 questions, participants were asked to tell the competitor why the interviewer should choose them over the competitor. Participants' videotaped behavior was coded for different behavioral tactics. Men who were more symmetrical and who had a more unrestricted sociosexual orientation were more likely to use direct competition tactics than were less symmetrical and restricted men. Restricted men accentuated their positive personal quali

Intra- and Intersexual Mate Competition in Two Cultures : A Comparison of Women's Response to Mate Competition with Women and Gender-Nonbinary Males in Samoa and among the Istmo Zapotec.

The present study examined women's mate competition tactics in response to female and feminine-male rivals in two cultures in which competition against both occurs. In Samoa and the Istmo Zapotec (Southern Mexico), women not only compete with other women (intrasexually) but also compete with rival feminine males (intersexually) in order to access/retain the same masculine men as sexual/romantic partners. Using a mixed-method paradigm, women were asked about their experiences of intra- and intersexual mate competition, and these narratives were recorded. The tactics reportedly employed by parti

Knowledge hiding in organizational crisis: The moderating role of leadership.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused organizational crises leading to shutdowns, mergers, downsizing or restructuring to minimize survival costs. In such organizational crises, employees tend to experience a loss or lack of resources, and they are more likely to engage in knowledge hiding to maintain their resources and competitive advantage. Knowledge hiding has often caused significant adverse consequences, and the research on knowledge hiding is limited. Drawing upon the Conservation of Resources and Transformational Leadership theories, a conceptual framework was developed to examine knowledge

Chemically Fueled Interfacial Supramolecular Polymerization.

Systems capable of dissipative self-assembly emulate the dynamic, adaptive behavior of biological systems, yet spatial control over this behavior remains a challenge. Here, we show how to generate chemically fueled supramolecular polymers at liquid-liquid interfaces by coupling a chemical reaction network with an orthogonal self-assembly based on host-guest interactions and metal-ligand coordination. Confinement to the interface yields readily tunable lifetimes for the polymers as well as an ability to undergo controlled depolymerization in response to stimuli, including redox cues or competit

Association between behavioral phenotypes and response to a physical activity intervention using gamification and social incentives: Secondary analysis of the STEP UP randomized clinical trial.

Participants often vary in their response to behavioral interventions, but methods to identify groups of participants that are more likely to respond are lacking. In this secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial, we used baseline characteristics to group participants into distinct behavioral phenotypes and evaluated differential responses to a physical activity intervention. Latent class analysis was used to segment participants based on baseline participant data including demographics, validated measures of psychosocial variables, and physical activity behavior. The trial included 60

The effect of high-quality voice on observing employees' helping behavior among Chinese employees: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Drawing on social exchange theory, this study targets Chinese workplace employees and aims to explore the relationship between voicers' high-quality voice and observing employees' helping behavior within the Chinese organizational context, while considering the mediator of perceived benefits of resource access, along with the moderating role of goal competitiveness. METHOD: This study employed a two-wave time-lagged survey design to examine the theoretical model. A total of 226 employees in China were used to test our hypotheses by adopting hierarchical multiple regression method.

Cell-Specific "Competition for Calories" Drives Asymmetric Nutrient-Energy Partitioning, Obesity, and Metabolic Diseases in Human and Non-human Animals.

The mammalian body is a complex physiologic "ecosystem" in which cells compete for calories (i.e., nutrient-energy). Axiomatically, cell-types with competitive advantages acquire a greater number of consumed calories, and when possible, increase in size and/or number. Thus, it is logical and parsimonious to posit that obesity is the competitive advantages of fat-cells (adipocytes) driving a disproportionate acquisition and storage of nutrient-energy. Accordingly, we introduce two conceptual frameworks. Asymmetric Nutrient-Energy Partitioning describes the context-dependent, cell-specific compe

Limb apraxia and the "affordance competition hypothesis".

Limb apraxia, a disorder of higher order motor control, has long been a challenge for clinical assessment and understanding (Leiguarda and Marsden, 2000). The deficits originally described in limb apraxia (Liepmann, 1920) have been classified by the nature of the errors made by the patients leading to, namely, ideational and ideomotor apraxia. The dual stream hypothesis (Goodale and Milner, 1992) has been used to explain these categories: ideational apraxia is thought to relate to a deficit in the concept of a movement (coded in the ventral stream). Patients have difficulty using objects, sequ

Testing strategic pluralism: The roles of attractiveness and competitive abilities to understand conditionality in men's short-term reproductive strategies.

The decision to allocate time and energy to find multiple sexual partners or raise children is a fundamental reproductive trade-off. The Strategic Pluralism Hypothesis argues that human reproductive strategies are facultatively calibrated towards either investing in mating or parenting (or a mixture), according to the expression of features dependent on the individual's condition. This study seeks to test predictions derived from this hypothesis in a sample of 242 young men (M ± SD = 22.12 ± 3.08) from Chile's 5th Region (33֯ south latitude). Specifically, two predictions were considered that

Structural Engineering of Furazanopyrazine Scaffolds with Flexible Biogenic Amines and Nitramine Moieties for Fused Energetic Melt-Castable Materials.

Furazanopyrazine-based energetic compounds were developed through a substitution-nitration strategy combining flexible biogenic amine side chains with nitramine modification. Structural and thermal analyses revealed that side-chain flexibility effectively tunes crystal packing and phase behavior. Among compounds I-VII·H2O, compound II exhibited the most favorable melt-cast characteristics, with a melting point of 89 °C, competitive detonation performance, and acceptable sensitivities. These results offer a useful design strategy for fused-ring melt-cast energetic materials.

Using immersive virtual reality to remotely examine performance differences between dominant and non-dominant hands.

PURPOSE: Scaffold materials that better support neurogenesis are still needed to improve cell therapy outcomes for neural tissue damage. We have used a modularly tunable, highly compliant, degradable hydrogel to explore the impacts of hydrogel compliance stiffness on neural differentiation. Here we implemented competitive matrix crosslinking mechanics to finely tune synthetic hydrogel moduli within soft tissue stiffnesses, a range much softer than typically achievable in synthetic crosslinked hydrogels, providing a modularly controlled and ultrasoft 3D culture model which supports and enhances

Decoding individual dairy cow behavioral profiles through electronic feeder and drinker data.

Individual animals can differ considerably in how they feed, drink, and compete for resources, yet much data analysis still relies on group-level comparisons that obscure these individual differences. Electronic feeding and drinking systems make it possible to characterize individual behavioral profiles within groups. Using 107 lactating Holstein dairy cows tracked over 207 d, we extracted 16 behavioral variables from electronic feed bin and water bin data, capturing conventional metrics (feeding and drinking intake, duration and meal frequency) alongside measures of non-nutritive visits, soci

Access to shade changes behavioral and physiological attributes of dairy cows during the hot season in the subtropics.

The effect of shade on behavior and physiological attributes of grazing cows in a high altitude subtropical zone is not well established. This work aimed to investigate how social and ingestive behaviors, as well as physiological and other attributes of dairy cows such as milk production, change in a subtropical environment during the hot season either with or without free access to shade. Fourteen lactating cows were kept on pasture either with no shade or with free access to shade for 5 days and their behavior was recorded with instantaneous scan sampled every 10 min, from sunrise, 0530 h (G

Familial resemblance in components of the type A behavior pattern: a reanalysis of the California type A twin study.

Rosenman and colleagues reported no heritability of global Type A behavior assessed by the Structured Interview (SI) method, although some of the self-report scales correlated with global Type A behavior did have heritable components. Recent factor analyses of coded SI responses revealed four independent dimensions: clinical ratings, primarily of speech stylistics; and self-reports of pressured drive, anger, and competitiveness. It may be that some of these dimensions have a heritable base, whereas others do not. We report here reanalyses of the available SI responses from the Rosenman sample.
