Influence of compost application rate on nutrient and heavy metal mobility: Implications for stormwater management.

Amending soils with compost has become increasingly common in stormwater management practices. Compost can be a source and sink for nutrients and heavy metals, and it is important to understand the effect of compost on pollutant leaching under different hydrologic conditions. The objectives of this study were (a) to quantify the distribution coefficient (Kd ) of PO4 -P and metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) for compost-soil blends and (b) to examine how compost rate alters leaching patterns of nutrients (NH4 -N, NO3 -N, PO4 -P) and metals from compost-soil blends. Material consisted of a sandy lo

Preliminary design for establishing compost maturity by using the spectral characteristics of five organic fertilizers.

The maturity of compost is involved in the availability of nutrients to crops and improvement of soil properties after fertilization. In the past, the determination of composts maturity mostly required analysis in the laboratory previously and it must consume a lot of time and cost. This study was conducted to use Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and solid 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopy to understand the mature characteristics of five type of common composts. The FTIR analysis showed that all composts contained aromatic groups. In addition, the surface of f

Insight into the mechanisms of insoluble phosphate transformation driven by the interactions of compound microbes during composting.

Phosphate-solubilizing (PS) microbes are important to improve phosphorus availability and transformation of insoluble phosphate, e.g., rock phosphate (RP). The use of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) as inoculants have been proposed as an alternative to increase phosphate availability in RP and composting fertilizers. In this study, the effect of compound PSB coinoculation and single-strain inoculation on the transformation of insoluble phosphate were compared in a liquid medium incubation and RP-enriched composting. The goal of this study was to understand the possible mechanisms of inso

Distribution characteristics of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes in fresh and composted manures of livestock farms.

Livestock manure is a major reservoir of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study investigated the distribution characteristics of ARB, ARGs in fresh and composted manures of traditional breading industry in rural areas in China. Samples collected were naturally piled without professional composting, and will be applied to farmland. The real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results showed the presence of ten target ARGs and two mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the tested manure samples. The relative abundance of tetracycline and

Fate of antibiotics present in a primary sludge of WWTP during their co-composting with palm wastes.

Antibiotics persistence in the primary sludge can contribute to the emergence of these molecules in the environment and limit the agricultural recycling of sludge without any preliminary treatment. Composting is a widely used process for recycling sludges and then can contribute to the antibiotics removal. However, little interest is actually given to the evaluation of the persistence of some antibiotics families after the sludge co-composting and more particularly to the final compost valorization. In this work, antibiotics concentrations of βeta-lactams, Macrolides, Lincosamide, Tetracycline

Use of inorganic wastes as immobilizing agents for soluble P in green waste-based composts.

PURPOSE: The study examines the effectiveness of red mud, blast furnace (BF) slag, and alum-derived water treatment sludge as immobilizing agents for excessive soluble P that had accumulated in three green waste-based composts. METHODS: The three wastes were applied at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 20% w/w to three different composts, all containing extremely high concentrations of extractable P, and were incubated for 60 days. Water-soluble P was measured regularly throughout the incubation period, and at the end, P extractable with resin, 0.05 M NaHCO(3), and 0.005 M H(2)SO(4) were also measured. RESUL

[Biodegradation of tri- and perchloroethylene in sewage waters and soils by a microbial consortium of compost and phototrophic bacteria].

Compost and phototrophic bacteria are found to be able to degrade trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). With a TCE dose increase by more than 10 mg/kg, the TCE degradation decreases due to the toxic effect of this pollutant on microbial consortium activity. The addition of compost combined with a liquid culture of phototrophic bacteria (PTB) is experimentally proved to effectively decrease the TCE content in soil and water.

Environmental risk assessment of compost prepared from salvinia, egeria densa, and alligator weed.

Approximately 70,000 m(3) of salvinia (Salvinia molesta) was removed from the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, during 2004. This study assessed the risks associated with applying compost prepared from aquatic weeds (AWC) to land, namely, survival and spread of aquatic and terrestrial weeds, eutrophication of waterways, accumulation of heavy metals and phytotoxicity. The results demonstrate composting is an effective method of reducing the viability of aquatic and terrestrial weeds. However, mortality of alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides), which was used as a

Sorption and biodegradation of vapor-phase organic compounds with wastewater sludge and food waste compost.

To test the possible use of composted food waste and wastewater sludge as biofilters to treat gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs), batch experiments were conducted with an isolated strain that could degrade aromatic compounds under aerobic conditions. A benzene and trichloroethylene (TCE) mixture was used as the gas-phase pollutant in experiments with composted food waste, sludge, and soil. Under aerobic conditions, benzene was degraded as a primary substrate and TCE was degraded cometabolically, with water contents varying from 6 to 60% (volume of water added/volume of solid). Optimal

[Review of risks of biological agents and preventive measures to safeguard the health of compost production workers].

A review of studies made in the compost production industry showed the biological agents posing a risk for workers were fungi and thermophile bacteria, gram-negative bacteria and endotoxins, with a prevalent inhalation exposure to airborne contaminated dusts. Medical examinations revealed cases of extrinsic allergic alveolitis due to A. fumigatus, and more frequently irritative and infectious disorders occurring especially in conditions of poor environmental hygiene and macroscopic dust pollution. For the evaluation of the air dispersion of microorganisms, which is high in compost transport an

Organic dust exposures from compost handling: case presentation and respiratory exposure assessment.

Inhalation of dust from contaminated organic materials may result in acute respiratory tract illness. Possible mechanisms include toxic and cellular reactions to microbial and other organic products or immunologic responses after prior sensitization to an antigen. A case is presented of a 52 year old male who developed fever, myalgia, and marked dyspnea 12 hr after shoveling composted wood chips and leaves. Inspiratory crackles, hypoxemia, and bilateral patchy pulmonary infiltrates were seen. Precipitating antibody tests for the usual antigens were inconclusive. He improved over 3 days. In ord

Development of a controlled laboratory model for studying compost bedded pack systems and microbial dynamics.

This study aimed to develop a compost bedded pack (CBP) model of the active composting layer in dairy housing systems by applying conditions observed on commercial CBP farms along with parameters from published studies. The model was constructed using pack materials collected from 4 commercial CBPs, managed under standardized laboratory conditions to minimize environmental variability. Compost bedded pack material consisting of manure and sawdust obtained from each farm was divided into 6 containers with 3 randomly assigned to control (daily mixing only) and 3 randomly assigned to enriched (da

From trash to compost: Evaluating waste reduction and carbon emissions in a Malaysian ecotourism site.

Tourism-related waste generation poses a significant environmental challenge, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas. This study investigates the quantity, composition and associated carbon emissions of solid waste generated by tourists over four weekends at Lata Sempeneh, Batu Kurau, Perak, Malaysia. The waste characterization was conducted following the Malaysian Standard MS 2505:2012 for household solid waste composition, whereas greenhouse gas emissions (methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2)) were estimated using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 1996 mass balance

Tailored release profiles of alginate and pectin beads by embedding compost-extracted humic substances.

Humic Substances (HS) isolated from composted horticultural residues (HS-COM) or lignite (HS-LIG) were blended with alginate or pectin to synthesise novel beads with tuned release of phloroglucinol, a compound used to control plant pathogens. We observed that the physical-chemical and release characteristics of the beads depended on the chemical structure of HS and of the polysaccharidic matrix employed, as determined by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Indeed, strong interactions between pectin backbone and HS-COM hydrophilic moieties resulted in beads with tightly packed structure an

Microplastics as emerging contaminants in municipal solid waste compost: Distribution, characterization, and ecological risk.

The increasing abundance of microplastics (MPs) in water and soil has raised significant environmental concerns. This study evaluated the abundance and ecological risks of MPs in compost produced from three composting facilities (S1-S3) in Isfahan province, central Iran. Monthly samples were collected over a year, and MPs were extracted using an adapted protocol involving organic matter digestion with 0.05 M Fe (II) solution and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), followed by density separation using saturated zinc chloride (ZnCl2). Despite rigorous methods, limitations remain due to the lack of a globa

Thermophilic compost bacteria as a promising approach for removal of diclofenac and related pharmaceuticals from wastewater.

Diclofenac, a widely used pharmaceutical, poses a significant environmental problem due to its persistence in aquatic systems and resistance to conventional degradation processes. Mesophilic microorganisms, commonly employed in wastewater treatment, often struggle to break down diclofenac, necessitating alternative approaches for its removal. In this study, we investigated thermophilic compost microorganisms and their ability to degrade diclofenac. Compost communities were cultivated for 20 weeks at 50 °C in a membrane bioreactor, with a continuous supply of 2 mg/L diclofenac as the sole carbo
