Reading comprehension in children with ADHD: cognitive underpinnings of the centrality deficit.

We examined reading comprehension in children with ADHD by assessing their ability to build a coherent mental representation that allows them to recall central and peripheral information. We compared children with ADHD (mean age 9.78) to word reading-matched controls (mean age 9.89) on their ability to retell a passage. We found that even though children with ADHD recalled more central than peripheral information, they showed their greatest deficit, relative to controls, on central information-a centrality deficit (Miller and Keenan, Annals of Dyslexia 59:99-113, 2009). We explored the cogniti

Orthographic processing and reading comprehension among Arabic speaking mainstream and LD children.

Two cohorts of mainstream children (grades 2-5) and one cohort of children with learning disabilities (LD; grades 3-5), all Arabic speaking children in Kuwait, were given measures of reading comprehension fluency and orthographic discrimination to assess the relationship between the two. Additional measures of phonological processing (decoding and awareness), speed of processing (rapid naming) and memory (visual as well as phonological/verbal tasks) were included either because these have been found to be predictive of Arabic literacy or to provide an assessment of alternative interpretations

Right hemisphere dysfunction and metaphor comprehension in young adults with Asperger syndrome.

This study examined whether the known difficulties in metaphor comprehension exhibited by persons with Asperger syndrome (AS) can be explained by a dysfunctional right hemisphere (RH). Using the divided visual field paradigm, 27 AS participants and 36 matched controls were presented with word pairs of four types (literal, conventional metaphors, novel metaphors, and unrelated word pairs), and were asked to perform a semantic judgment task. The main hypothesis was that whereas the control group participants will show RH superiority for novel metaphor processing, no RH superiority will be found

Deficits in affective prosody comprehension: family history of alcoholism versus alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Abstinent alcoholics have deficits in comprehending the affective intonation in speech. Prior work suggests that these deficits are due to alcohol exposure rather than preexisting risk factors for alcoholism. The present paper examines whether family history of alcoholism is a contributor to affective prosody deficits in alcoholics. METHODS: Fifty-eight healthy, nonabusing young adults with and without a family history of alcoholism or other substance abuse (29 FH+ and 29 FH-) were compared on affective prosody comprehension using the Aprosodia Battery. A secondary analysis was do

Functional MRI of sentence comprehension in children with dyslexia: beyond word recognition.

Sentence comprehension (SC) studies in typical and impaired readers suggest that reading for meaning involves more extensive brain activation than reading isolated words. Thus far, no reading disability/dyslexia (RD) studies have directly controlled for the word recognition (WR) components of SC tasks, which is central for understanding comprehension processes beyond WR. This experiment compared SC to WR in 29, 9-14 year olds (15 typical and 14 impaired readers). The SC-WR contrast for each group showed activation in left inferior frontal and extrastriate regions, but the RD group showed signi

Dysfunctional facial emotional expression and comprehension in a patient with corticobasal degeneration.

Patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD) frequently develop orofacial apraxia but little is known about CBD's influence on emotional facial processing. We describe a patient who developed a facial apraxia including an impaired ability to voluntarily generate facial expressions with relative sparing of spontaneous emotional faces. Her ability to interpret the facial expressions of others was also severely impaired. Despite these deficits, the patient had normal affect and normal speech, including expressive and receptive emotional prosody. As patients with corticobasal degeneration are kno

Right anterior superior temporal activation predicts auditory sentence comprehension following aphasic stroke.

Previous studies have suggested that recovery of speech comprehension after left hemisphere infarction may depend on a mechanism in the right hemisphere. However, the role that distinct right hemisphere regions play in speech comprehension following left hemisphere stroke has not been established. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate narrative speech activation in 18 neurologically normal subjects and 17 patients with left hemisphere stroke and a history of aphasia. Activation for listening to meaningful stories relative to meaningless reversed speech was i

Digit span in dyslexia: variations according to language comprehension and mathematics skills.

The aim of this study was to investigate digit span performance in dyslexia. It was hypothesised that differences would be found in accordance with subgrouping by language comprehension and mathematic skills, and by analyses of how the digit span scores were attained. Two digit span tasks were given to a group of dyslexic children and controls (n = 57), mean age 12.62 (SD = 1.43). The tasks were "Digit Span" of the WISC-R, and "Digit Span 2," where the use of back-up strategies like finger counting and lip reading were restricted. As expected, the digit span scores were significantly lower in

Language comprehension and expression among adolescents who have experienced childhood physical abuse.

The present study compared the expressive and receptive language abilities of adolescents who had experienced physical abuse as children with the abilities of a closely matched control group who had not experienced maltreatment. Comprehension abilities of the two groups (as measured on a standard test) did not differ significantly. There were also no significant differences in expressive vocabulary. The syntactic expression of the abused group was significantly more impaired than that of the non-abused group. In addition, two aspects of functional communication were impaired significantly. The

Bacterial quantification--a necessary complement for the comprehension of middle ear inflammations.

Quantification of bacteria in various types of middle ear effusion (MEE) obtained during current acute otitis media (AOM), otitis media with effusion (OME) and chronic suppurative otitis media (COM) was performed. The bacteria were stained with acridine orange and their number per ml effusion evaluated under the fluorescence microscope according to a method described in detail elsewhere. During AOM, 53% of the MEE samples were culture-positive and contained 10(6)-10(8) bacteria per ml (median value 10(7) per ml). During OME, serous effusion and 78% of the mucoid effusions contained no bacteria

Discrimination of normal and aphasic subjects on a test of syntactic comprehension.

An Anglophone population consisting of 37 aphasic patients and 23 normal control subjects, and a Francophone population consisting of 49 aphasic patients and 23 control subjects were given a task requiring the comprehension of syntactic structures for the correct assignment of thematic roles to nouns. Discriminant analysis was used to classify subjects into aphasic and normal groups according to their scores on the task. In both populations--Anglophone and Francophone--most of the subjects were classified into their actual groups except for an occasional normal subject classified with the apha

[Quality of information in informed consents for hernioplasty: readability, comprehension, and patient perception].

BACKGROUND: Informed consent (IC) is the process by which patients receive information from healthcare professionals in order to understand the essential aspects of a proposed intervention and to make an autonomous decision about whether to accept or refuse it. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to written informed consent forms, partly because they appear to provide a more objective record of the communication process within the clinical relationship. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the readability of informed consent documents used for hernioplasty and to evaluate whether patients re

Phonological processing, oral language abilities, and reading comprehension in children with cochlear implants.

Acquiring literacy (i.e., the ability to read with comprehension) involves language and phonological processing skills and can be challenging for deaf children. Deficits in phonological processing, which are often more pronounced in hearing impaired children, increase risk for language and reading disorders. Advances in hearing technology, including cochlear implants (CIs), have yielded promising improvements in language and reading. In this study, norm-referenced assessments of phonological processing, oral language abilities, and reading comprehension were administered to 47 prelingually dea

Advances in glycerol metabolism comprehension in yeasts: from regulation to metabolic engineering strategies.

Glycerol is a polyol that can be produced either chemically from oils or propylene, or biologically by yeasts, mainly under osmotic stress. Currently, glycerol is an abundant byproduct generated during biodiesel manufacturing that can be used as substrate in fermentative processes. Its efficient assimilation varies widely among yeast species; therefore, understanding the regulation of both transport and catabolism is pivotal for optimizing biotechnological processes based on this carbon source. This review addresses current knowledge on the regulatory networks controlling glycerol metabolism i

Spatial Hearing and Aging Effects on Mandarin Focus Comprehension in Complex Listening Environments.

PURPOSE: This study examined aging effects in Mandarin prosodic focus comprehension, specifically investigating whether postfocus compression (PFC) and spatial separation between speech and noise both serve as effective perceptual cues for older listeners compared to younger counterparts in complex listening environments. METHOD: Twenty younger and 20 older native Mandarin listeners were recruited to identify implied contrastive meaning via prosodic cues in focus comprehension tasks conducted in an acoustically treated semi-anechoic chamber. Stimuli included five focus types (subject initial

Situation model manipulations differently engage semantic and default mode networks during narrative comprehension.

Narrative comprehension involves creating a mental representation of the events of the story: a "situation model". Maintaining a situation model is thought to be supported by the Default Mode Network (DMN), but recent work suggests that the semantic system, and specifically the ventrolateral anterior temporal lobe (ATL), may play a role in reflecting on and restructuring the situation model via internally-driven or endogenous semantic processing. The present study used fMRI to investigate how ATL and DMN brain regions respond under varying exogenous, or input-driven, and endogenous processing

Script-Specific Predictors of Reading Comprehension in Hebrew-Speaking Children With Reading Difficulties.

This study investigates cognitive-linguistic predictors of reading comprehension (RC) in Hebrew-speaking children with reading difficulties (RD). Hebrew's dual orthographic system including vowelized (shallow) and unvowelized (deep) scripts offers a valuable context for examining how cognitive-linguistic predictors differentially support reading across levels of orthographic transparency. A cross-sectional design was used with Grade 3 children with RD, utilising Fisher's Z-tests to identify significant differences in the strength of correlations between predictors and RC across scripts as well

Does cultural context matter? Comparison of Finnish and Italian children's social-pragmatic comprehension.

INTRODUCTION: While social-pragmatic comprehension has been studied from a number of perspectives, there are only a few studies that focus on cultural factors and their effect on the development of pragmatic processing skills. Previous studies have suggested that various communicative features and different communicative styles may be detected in individuals coming from different contextual backgrounds, even within Europe itself. METHODS: In this light, the present study compared the performance of 150 Finnish and 150 Italian children matched for age and gender (age range 4-8 years) on the Pr
