The epidemiology and differential diagnosis of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is now recognized as a common psychiatric disorder. The lifetime prevalence of 2% to 3% found in the United States has also been found in epidemiologic studies in several other countries with diverse cultures. This disorder has previously been underestimated due to a number of factors that include patients' reluctance to spontaneously admit to obsessions and compulsions and the omission of screening questions about obsessive compulsive disorder on routine mental status examinations. Depression and other anxiety disorders frequently co-occur with obsessive compulsi

Classification and treatment of obsessional slowness.

Obsessional slowness is regarded as an uncommon but severely disabling variant of obsessive-compulsive disorder. This paper examines the psychopathology, classification, pathophysiology and treatment of obsessional slowness. It argues that primary obsessional slowness does not require classification as a separate syndrome because it can be found to be secondary to recognised phenomena of obsessive-compulsive disorder or anankastic personality disorder. The treatment described in the literature is not thought to be successful in the long term, and controlled trials are required to evaluate new

[Personality disorders in a nonclinical sample of adolescents].

OBJECTIVE: To examine the comorbidity of borderline personality disorder and other personality disorders in a nonclinical sample of high-school students. METHOD: 311 high-school students who completed the French version of the CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale), were asked to participate to interviews evaluating personality functioning: 60 subjects (19%) accepted to participate in the study. The mean CES-D score of these 60 subjects (16 boys, 44 girls, mean age=17.7 1.7) was significantly higher than the mean score of the whole sample (23.9 10.4 versus 16.7 9.8). Thus

[Are eating disorders addictions?].

The various eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, are characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior and are seen as typical "psychosomatic disorders". The subdivision of anorexia nervosa into two subtypes, namely "anorexia nervosa restricting type" and "anorexia nervosa bulimic type" has proved to be very good. It is to be assumed that eating disorders are not a homogeneous group, and that the various subtypes of eating disorders are also heterogeneous at several levels. Co-morbid psychiatric disorders, especially affective disorders, anxiety

Early improvement in eating attitudes during cognitive behavioural therapy for eating disorders: the impact of personality disorder cognitions.

BACKGROUND: The personality disorders are commonly comorbid with the eating disorders. Personality disorder pathology is often suggested to impair the treatment of axis 1 disorders, including the eating disorders. AIMS: This study examined whether personality disorder cognitions reduce the impact of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for eating disorders, in terms of treatment dropout and change in eating disorder attitudes in the early stages of treatment. METHOD: Participants were individuals with a diagnosed eating disorder, presenting for individual outpatient CBT. They completed measur

Refining the diagnostic boundaries of compulsive hoarding: a critical review.

Like most human behaviors, saving and collecting possessions can range from totally normal and adaptive to excessive or pathological. Hoarding, or compulsive hoarding, are some of the more commonly used terms to refer to this excessive form of collectionism. Hoarding is highly prevalent and, when severe, it is associated with substantial functional disability and represents a great burden for the sufferers, their families, and society in general. It is generally considered difficult to treat. Hoarding can occur in the context of a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions. Although it

Comorbidity of bulimia nervosa and personality disorder.

Thirty patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa with at least three bingeing episodes a week were compared with 30 age- and sex-matched controls on DSM-III personality measures. The bulimic patients were more likely to display cluster B (histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and borderline) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 15.0) and cluster C (avoidant, dependent, compulsive, and passive-aggressive) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 4.3) than were the community controls. This study supports the finding that personality disorder is a possible risk factor for bulimia.

An investigation of doubt in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians have long considered doubt to be a fundamental characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the clinical relevance of doubt in OCD has not been addressed. METHODS: Participants included 1182 adults with OCD who had participated in family and genetic studies of OCD. We used a clinical measure of the severity of doubt, categorized as none, mild, moderate, severe, or extreme. We evaluated the relationship between doubt and OCD clinical features, Axis I disorders, personality and personality disorder dimensions, impairment, and treatment response. RESULT

Personality disorders and its association with anxiety and depression among patients of severe acne: A cross-sectional study from Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: In many patients, emotional stress may exacerbate acne. Psychological problems such as social phobias, low self-esteem, or depression may also occur as a result of acne. The presence of acne may have some negative effect on the quality of life, self-esteem, and mood of the affected patients. While some studies have been undertaken about anxiety, depression, and personality patterns in patients with acne, only a few studies have been done to identify specific personality disorders in patients with acne. Furthermore, there is a dearth of data regarding the effect of personality disor
