Using AAC video visual scene displays to increase participation and communication within a volunteer activity for adolescents with complex communication needs.

Volunteer activities can provide opportunities to learn new skills, build social networks, and contribute to enhanced self-esteem. Volunteering also provides a positive contribution to society, and an opportunity to participate in activities that may differ from those in paid employment. People with severe disabilities and complex communication needs, however, may face significant barriers in participating and communicating in volunteer activities. A multiple-probe-across-participants, single-case experimental design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of videos with integrated visual scene

The difference in visuomotor feedback velocity control during spiral drawing between Parkinson's disease and essential tremor.

In a spiral task, the accuracy of the spiral trajectory, which is affected by tracing or tracking ability, differs between patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET). However, not many studies have analyzed velocity differences between the groups during this task. This study aimed to examine differences between the groups related to this characteristic using a tablet. Fourteen PD, 12 ET, and 12 control group participants performed two tasks: tracing a given spiral (T1) and following a guiding point (T2). A digitized tablet was used to record movements and trajectory. Effe

Ruminative self-focus in daily life: associations with daily activities and depressive symptoms.

The present study examined the situations and conditions in which ruminative self-focus is less likely to occur in daily life. Previous researchers have described a mood-brightening effect of depression, where depressed individuals exhibit greater positive emotional reactivity to positive daily events than do nondepressed individuals. To better understand this paradoxical effect, we investigated the moderating role of depression in the relationship between daily activities and ruminative thinking. Forty-one Japanese undergraduates (9 women and 32 men) recorded their thought contents and the ty

A naturalistic evaluation of the relation between dietary restraint, the urge to binge, and actual binge eating: a clarification.

OBJECTIVE: The current study attempted to characterize the natural course of events linking dietary restraint to urges to binge and actual binge episodes. METHOD: Using preprogrammed, hand-held computers, 39 women with bulimia-spectrum eating disorders monitored ongoing eating episodes, dietary restraint, and binge cravings over a 7-29-day interval. RESULTS: Multilevel modeling analyses indicated that restraint was not systematically elevated before binging. However, elevated restraint preceded strong binge cravings. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that dietary restraint may contribute to binge

Development of a novel remote-controlled and self-contained audiovisual-aided interactive system for immobilizing claustrophobic patients.

In radiotherapy, only a few immobilization systems, such as open-face mask and head mold with a bite plate, are available for claustrophobic patients with a certain degree of discomfort. The purpose of this study was to develop a remote-controlled and self-contained audiovisual (AV)-aided interactive system with the iPad mini with Retina display for intrafractional motion management in brain/H&N (head and neck) radiotherapy for claustrophobic patients. The self-contained, AV-aided interactive system utilized two tablet computers: one for AV-aided interactive guidance for the subject and th

HPOCUS versus CBCT as a follow-up modality for patients with zygomatic arch fractures.

Handheld point-of-care ultrasound (HPOCUS) is a rapidly growing technology with an expanding range of medical applications. A new method to compare two-dimensional (2D) HPOCUS accuracy with three-dimensional (3D) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was devised. Ten patients who had completed long-term follow up after surgical intervention to correct displaced zygomatic arch (ZA) fractures were included. The outer cortical outline of the 2D ZA was identified using HPOCUS and superimposed on to a 3D CBCT segmentation. A pointwise analysis of 100 discrete paired points was used to calculate the

Assessing usability of electronic patient-reported outcome measures in older people with and without a rare dermatologic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Robust and well-defined data collection is important when using electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) in clinical studies. Questions have been raised as to whether older age may be a barrier to data collection due to patients' unfamiliarity with electronic devices. Older adults may also have underlying health conditions that affect their ability to fill out patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) on electronic devices. The aim of this observational, qualitative research study was to evaluate the usability of electronic PROMs (ePROMs) on a tablet and smartphone in

ASTEROID stereotest v1.0: lower stereo thresholds using smaller, denser and faster dots.

PURPOSE: In 2019, we described ASTEROID, a new stereotest run on a 3D tablet computer which involves a four-alternative disparity detection task on a dynamic random-dot stereogram. Stereo thresholds measured with ASTEROID were well correlated with, but systematically higher than (by a factor of around 1.5), thresholds measured with previous laboratory stereotests or the Randot Preschool clinical stereotest. We speculated that this might be due to the relatively large, sparse dots used in ASTEROID v0.9. Here, we introduce and test the stereo thresholds and test-repeatability of the new ASTEROID

Quantifying the effect of corrective surgery for trigonocephaly: A non-invasive, non-ionizing method using three-dimensional handheld scanning and statistical shape modelling.

Trigonocephaly in patients with metopic synostosis is corrected by fronto-orbital remodelling (FOR). The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess aesthetic outcomes of FOR by capturing 3D forehead scans of metopic patients pre- and post-operatively and comparing them with controls. Ten single-suture metopic patients undergoing FOR and 15 age-matched non-craniosynostotic controls were recruited at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (UK). Scans were acquired with a three-dimensional (3D) handheld camera and post-processed combining 3D imaging software. 3D scans were first used for c
