Application of Computer Techniques in Correcting Mild Zygomatic Assymetry With Unilateral Reduction Malarplasty.

Zygomatic assymetry is common in the population, which often requires surgical correction for aesthetic concerns. Previously, surgeons performed the surgery often based on their personal experience and visual evaluation. The purpose of this study was to apply computer techniques in patients with mild zygomatic asymmetry treated with unilateral reduction malarplasty to improve surgical accuracy and reduce preoperative risks. The authors used computer techniques to plan osteotomies, to produce surgical template, and to evaluate the surgical outcome. Postoperative follow-up demonstrated that zygo

Clinical Perspectives on the Use of Computer Vision in Glaucoma Screening.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the world. Early diagnosis and treatment increase the chances of preserving vision. However, despite advances in techniques for the functional and structural assessment of the retina, specialists still encounter many challenges, in part due to the different presentations of the standard optic nerve head (ONH) in the population, the lack of explicit references that define the limits of glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON), specialist experience, and the quality of patients' responses to some ancillary exams. Computer vision uses

New approach methodologies complement but cannot replace animal models in critical care medicine research.

Critical care research focuses on life-threatening conditions such as sepsis, trauma, hemorrhage, and burn injury, which account for millions of hospitalizations and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually in the United States alone. Recent policy initiatives by the US Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health have promoted new approach methodologies, including organoids, organ-on-chip platforms, and computational models, as alternatives to animal research. While new approach methodologies offer valuable tools for mechanistic investigation and screening applications,

Dynamic 320-slice CT larynx for detection and management of idiopathic bilateral vocal cord paralysis.

Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord paralysis (VCP) is a rare and difficult condition often undiagnosed and frequently confused with asthma and other respiratory conditions. Accurate diagnosis is crucial since 80% of cases patients require surgical intervention, such as tracheostomy or laser surgery, to relieve symptoms. The "gold standard" for diagnosing VCP has been laryngoscopy. In this case study, we demonstrate for the first time that idiopathic bilateral VCP can be accurately diagnosed by means of a novel noninvasive methodology: dynamic volume 320-slice computed tomography larynx. Three-dim

Opportunities for using computers in speech and language therapy: a study of one language unit.

Whilst the use of information technology is increasing in importance as an aid to speech and language therapy, its introduction has so far been unsystematic. Systems analysis methodologies for assessing how information technology can best be employed have been developed for use in the business world. The present study used one such methodology--Checkland's soft systems--to investigate which aspects of the activities of one language unit were most likely to be improved or helped by the introduction of new technology. Such an approach was found to yield useful insights and several opportunities

Omics-based computational approaches for biomarker identification, prediction, and treatment of Long COVID.

Long COVID, or post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), is a major global health problem, with cumulative estimates suggesting that around 400 million people worldwide have been affected. It is characterized by persistent or new symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive impairment, and breathlessness lasting beyond four weeks after acute infection. Diverse clinical manifestations, chronic course, and incompletely understood pathophysiology-including hypotheses involving viral persistence, immune dysregulation, autoimmunity, endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic reprogramming-impede the development o

Iterative spectral methods for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman quasi-variational inequality in finance.

This study proposes a novel computational scheme for utility-maximization problems involving optimal stopping, formulated as Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman quasi-variational inequalities. The methodology integrates Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre spectral discretization with a penalization method and is solved efficiently via policy iteration. We establish the convergence of the penalized scheme and verify the effectiveness and robustness of the framework through a series of numerical experiments.

A supervised machine learning-based methodology for analyzing dysregulation in splicing machinery: An application in cancer diagnosis.

Deregulated splicing machinery components have shown to be associated with the development of several types of cancer and, therefore, the determination of such alterations can help the development of tumor-specific molecular targets for early prognosis and therapy. Determining such splicing components, however, is not a straightforward task mainly due to the heterogeneity of tumors, the variability across samples, and the fat-short characteristic of genomic datasets. In this work, a supervised machine learning-based methodology is proposed, allowing the determination of subsets of relevant spl

Evaluation of an automatic dry eye test using MCDM methods and rank correlation.

Dry eye is an increasingly common disease in modern society which affects a wide range of population and has a negative impact on their daily activities, such as working with computers or driving. It can be diagnosed through an automatic clinical test for tear film lipid layer classification based on color and texture analysis. Up to now, researchers have mainly focused on the improvement of the image analysis step. However, there is still large room for improvement on the machine learning side. This paper presents a methodology to optimize this problem by means of class binarization, feature

MRI neuroimaging of childhood psychiatric disorders: a selective review.

Over the past 10 years, innovations in physics and computer science have promoted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as an essential tool for investigating the biological substrates of psychiatric disorders. Requiring no radiation exposure, MRI is now the preferred imaging technique for pediatric populations. However, the rapid technical advances in MRI pulse sequences, data processing, and analysis have made it increasingly complex for clinicians to compare and critically evaluate MRI research studies. This paper selectively reviews MRI research on five psychiatric conditions occurring in child

Cancer incidence among women in the workplace: a study of the association between occupation and industry and 11 cancer sites.

Few studies of the occupational etiology of cancer have focused upon the risks that women experience in the workplace. In this case-referent study of 11 cancer sites (lung, colon, rectum, bladder, esophagus, liver, salivary gland, stomach, eye, melanoma of the skin, mesothelioma), 7686 women in the Detroit area were interviewed to obtain lifetime histories of employment, tobacco use, and adult health, as well as demographic information. The results provide both methodologic and substantive leads for future investigations of the association between women's employment and their risk of cancer. W

Advancing the assessment of pacifier effects with a novel computational method.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated a high likelihood of malocclusions resulting from non-nutritive sucking. Consequently, quantifying the impact of pacifiers can potentially aid in preventing the development or exacerbation of malocclusions and guide the design of improved performance pacifiers. METHODS: This work proposes and assesses a computational methodology that can effectively gather crucial information and provide more precise data regarding the consequences of non-nutritive pacifier sucking. The computational framework utilized is based on solids4Foam [1, 2], a collection

Bayesian Federated Inference for regression models based on non-shared medical center data.

To estimate accurately the parameters of a regression model, the sample size must be large enough relative to the number of possible predictors for the model. In practice, sufficient data is often lacking, which can lead to overfitting of the model and, as a consequence, unreliable predictions of the outcome of new patients. Pooling data from different data sets collected in different (medical) centers would alleviate this problem, but is often not feasible due to privacy regulation or logistic problems. An alternative route would be to analyze the local data in the centers separately and comb

Population-average mediation analysis for zero-inflated count outcomes.

Mediation analysis is an increasingly popular statistical method for explaining causal pathways to inform intervention. While methods have increased, there is still a dearth of robust mediation methods for count outcomes with excess zeroes. Current mediation methods addressing this issue are computationally intensive, biased, or challenging to interpret. To overcome these limitations, we propose a new mediation methodology for zero-inflated count outcomes using the marginalized zero-inflated Poisson (MZIP) model and the counterfactual approach to mediation. This novel work gives population-ave

Graph theory enables drug repurposing--how a mathematical model can drive the discovery of hidden mechanisms of action.

We introduce a methodology to efficiently exploit natural-language expressed biomedical knowledge for repurposing existing drugs towards diseases for which they were not initially intended. Leveraging on developments in Computational Linguistics and Graph Theory, a methodology is defined to build a graph representation of knowledge, which is automatically analysed to discover hidden relations between any drug and any disease: these relations are specific paths among the biomedical entities of the graph, representing possible Modes of Action for any given pharmacological compound. We propose a

Early detection of Alzheimer's disease progression stages using hybrid of CNN and transformer encoder models.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects memory and cognitive functions. Manual diagnosis is prone to human error, often leading to misdiagnosis or delayed detection. MRI techniques help visualize the fine tissues of the brain cells, indicating the stage of disease progression. Artificial intelligence techniques analyze MRI with high accuracy and extract subtle features that are difficult to diagnose manually. In this study, a modern methodology was designed that combines the power of CNN models (ResNet101 and GoogLeNet) to extract local deep features and the power

Phase Space Reconstruction Based CVD Classifier Using Localized Features.

This paper proposes a generalized Phase Space Reconstruction (PSR) based Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) classification methodology by exploiting the localized features of the ECG. The proposed methodology first extracts the ECG localized features including PR interval, QRS complex, and QT interval from the continuous ECG waveform using features extraction logic, then the PSR technique is applied to get the phase portraits of all the localized features. Based on the cleanliness and contour of the phase portraits CVD classification will be done. This is first of its kind approach where the locali

Single-slide detection and typing of AL renal amyloidosis: combining mass spectrometry imaging and digital pathology.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid typing, particularly in monoclonal gammopathies of renal significance, can be technically challenging. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation-Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI-MSI) has been proposed as a non-destructive method to detect and type amyloid deposits on a single tissue slide. This study aims to confirm this capability of MALDI-MSI in renal light chain amyloidosis (AL amyloidosis), irrespective of the fixative utilised, confronting results with other traditional and upcoming methods for amyloid detection. METHODOLOGY: MALDI-MSI was applied to 15 renal biopsi
