Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms and Conduct Problems in Children and Adolescents with Obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies focus on the potential factors that increase the potantial risks of obesity in children and adolescents. According to research for the past years, one of the factors that increases the risk of obesity may be attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We hypothesized that overweight/obese children and adolescents that apply to pediatric endocrinology for treatment would be at higher risk for ADHD symptoms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the sample consisted of 55 children and adolescents aged between 6-14 years with body mass index greater than 95th p

[Conduct disorder and antisocial personality disorders: challenges for treatment in adolescence and young adulthood].

Aggressive behaviour is a typical phenomenon in childhood and adolescence. Aggression is one of the frequent reasons for parents to seek child and adolescent psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatment. Disorders with increased aggressive behaviour, such as conduct or oppositional defiant disorder, carry an increased risk for long-lasting negative impact on well-being, especially when comorbid with substance abuse or affective symptoms. Barriers for treatment are frequently a lack of insight into consequences and non-compliance with intervention shown by adolescents. In addition, interdiscipli

An epidemiological study of ADHD and conduct disorder: does family conflict moderate the association?

PURPOSE: To examine the role of family conflict in the relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD). METHODS: A cross-sectional national population survey was carried out among 10,838 14-16 year old students in all secondary schools in Iceland. Three latent measures, financial status, ADHD and CD, and one observed measure, family structure, were included in the study. A structural equation model was used to evaluate direct effects between ADHD and CD for four different groups; females and males, experiencing family conflict and those not exper

Mental health among young adults in prison: the importance of childhood-onset conduct disorder.

BACKGROUND: The psychiatric health burden of prisoners is substantial. However, there is a lack of high-quality studies of psychiatric disorders among young adults with a high risk of reoffending. AIMS: To investigate the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders and use of mental health services among young male violent offenders and the impact of childhood-onset conduct disorder (COCD). METHOD: A nationally representative cohort (n = 270, age 18-25) of male offenders was followed back in medical records and clinically assessed by gold standard methods. Lifetime prevalences are presented

Body Mass Index z-Scores and Weight Status Predict Conduct Disorder Symptoms in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: The goal of the study was to examine whether baseline body mass index (BMI) z-scores and weight status predicted conduct disorder (CD) symptoms in 368 adolescents (15-17 years). METHODS: Participants in the 10th and 11th grades completed self-report questionnaires at baseline and at a 2-year follow-up. Baseline BMI z-scores and weight status were derived from self-reports of height and weight. CD symptoms were assessed using a symptom checklist. Covariates included baseline demographics, depressive symptoms, alcohol consumption, drug use, and a retrospective report of CD symptoms bef

Familial influences on conduct disorder reflect 2 genetic factors and 1 shared environmental factor.

CONTEXT: Prior studies suggest that antisocial behavior in childhood and adolescence reflects multiple symptomatic dimensions. However, to our knowledge, no prior study has evaluated the underlying nature of the etiologic influences contributing to conduct disorder (CD) symptoms as defined in the DSM. OBJECTIVE: To determine the structure of genetic and environmental risk factors for CD. DESIGN: Population-based twin registry. SETTING: Virginia. PARTICIPANTS: Two thousand seven hundred sixty-nine members of male-male twin pairs from the Virginia Adult Twin Study of Psychiatric and Substanc

Developmental pathways to conduct disorder: implications for future directions in research, assessment, and treatment.

Research has indicated that there are several common pathways through which children and adolescents develop conduct disorder, each with different risk factors and each with different underlying developmental mechanisms leading to the child's aggressive and antisocial behavior. The current article briefly summarizes research on these pathways, including one that onsets in adolescence and seems to be an exaggeration of normal adolescent rebellion against authority. The other two pathways typically involve conduct problems that onset early in childhood but differ on whether the child shows signi

Differences in frontal lobe function between violent and nonviolent conduct disorder in male adolescents.

AIMS: The objective of the present study was to investigate the differences in frontal lobe function between violent and nonviolent male adolescents with conduct disorder. METHODS: A total of 309 male adolescents who had been admitted to the Nagoya Juvenile Classification Home participated. The participants were divided into two groups, a violent group composed of individuals who had committed violence against others, and a nonviolent group. The subjects were given the Wisconsin card sorting test (Keio version: KWCST) and the Iowa Gambling task. The presence of violent cases was analyzed in t

Risperidone in children and adolescents with conduct disorder: a single-center, open-label study.

BACKGROUND: Risperidone is one of the most commonly used atypical antipsychotic drugs in the treatment of children and adolescents. However, the data about its use in children and adolescents with conduct disorder (CD) are limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and tolerability of risperidone in controlling major symptoms of CD in children and adolescents diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and severe CD. METHODS: Children and adolescents were eligible for this single-center, open-label s

Oppositional defiant and conduct disorder: a review of the past 10 years, part I.

OBJECTIVE: To review empirical findings on oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD). METHOD: Selected summaries of the literature over the past decade are presented. RESULTS: Evidence supports a distinction between the symptoms of ODD and many symptoms of CD, but there is controversy about whether aggressive symptoms should be considered to be part of ODD or CD. CD is clearly heterogenous, but further research is needed regarding the most useful subtypes. Some progress has been made in documenting sex differences. Symptoms that are more serious, more atypical for the chi

One-year outcome of adolescent females referred for conduct disorder and substance abuse/dependence.

We investigated whether substance abuse/dependence, conduct disorder, and other psychiatric disorders improved in adolescent females who were referred to outpatient treatment and which variables were related to 1-year outcome. Forty-six out of 60 conduct-disordered (CD) adolescent females with substance abuse or dependence were re-evaluated approximately 1 year after discharge. Treatment length averaged 16 weeks. Significant improvements were seen in three areas: (1) criminality and CD; (2) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and (3) educational and vocational status. However, nei

The pharmacological management of oppositional behaviour, conduct problems, and aggression in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Part 2: antipsychotics and traditional mood stabilizers.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD) are among the most common psychiatric diagnoses in childhood. Aggression and conduct problems are a major source of disability and a risk factor for poor long-term outcomes. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of antipsychotics, lithium, and anticonvulsants for aggression and conduct problems in youth with ADHD, ODD, and CD. Each medication was given an overall quality of evidence rating based on the Grading o

Gaze behavior, facial emotion processing, and neural underpinnings: A comparison of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and conduct disorder.

BACKGROUND: Facial emotion processing deficits and atypical eye gaze are often described in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those with conduct disorder (CD) and high callous unemotional (CU) traits. Yet, the underlying neural mechanisms of these deficits are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate if eye gaze can partially account for the differences in brain activation in youth with ASD, with CD, and typically developing youth (TD). METHODS: In total, 105 adolescent participants (NCD = 39, NASD = 27, NTD = 39; mean age = 15.59 years) underwent a brain func

The role of anxiety in cortisol stress response and cortisol recovery in boys with oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder.

Children with antisocial and aggressive behaviors have been found to show abnormal neurobiological responses to stress, specifically impaired cortisol stress reactivity. The role of individual characteristics, such as comorbid anxiety, in the stress response is far less studied. Furthermore, this study extended previous studies in that not only baseline and reactivity to a psychosocial stressor were examined, but also recovery from a stressor. These three phases of cortisol could be impacted differentially in boys with oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) with (+ANX) and wit

Childhood maltreatment and conduct disorder: independent predictors of adolescent substance use disorders in youth with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at heightened risk for maltreatment and later substance use disorders (SUDs). We investigated the relationship of childhood maltreatment and other risk factors to SUDs among adolescents diagnosed with ADHD in childhood. Eighty adolescents diagnosed with ADHD when they were 7 to 11 years old were screened for histories of childhood maltreatment, and SUD diagnoses were formulated in accordance with the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Lifetime history of problematic substance use was obtain

Progressive Conduction Disease in a Mitochondrial Disorder.

CASE SUMMARY: We describe the case of a 45-year-old man with progressive external ophthalmoplegia and pigmentary retinopathy who was referred for evaluation of a bradyarrhythmia due to exertional dyspnea and fatigue. A baseline electrocardiogram and ambulatory monitoring revealed clinically significant conduction abnormalities. TAKE-HOME MESSAGES: In Kearns-Sayre syndrome, conduction abnormalities may progress unpredictably; early permanent pacing should be strongly considered. Consider implantable cardioverter-defibrillator rather than pacemaker alone when additional high-risk features are p

Inherited progressive cardiac conduction disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Progressive cardiac conduction disorder (PCCD) is an inherited cardiac disease that may present as a primary electrical disease or be associated with structural heart disease. In this brief review, we present recent clinical, genetic, and molecular findings relating to PCCD. RECENT FINDINGS: Inherited PCCD in structurally normal hearts has been found to be linked to genetic variants in the ion channel genes SCN5A, SCN1B, SCN10A, TRPM4, and KCNK17, as well as in genes coding for cardiac connexin proteins. In addition, several SCN5A mutations lead to 'cardiac sodium channelop

[Idiopathyc progressive disorder of atrioventricular conductivity].

Atrioventricular (AV) blockades are classified into congenital and acquired ones. Conductive system fibrosis or sclerosis and coronary heart disease are the most frequent reasons for disturbances in AV conductivity. Congenital AV conductivity disorder may be associated with an isolated lesion of the AV conductive system or with other congenital diseases of the heart. The author describes a case of AV conductivity disorder which has been progressing for many years.
