BACKGROUND: Women experiencing homelessness have higher rates of unintended pregnancies than stably housed women. Given that some of this may be attributed to nonuse or inconsistent use of contraception, we explored the behavioral cognitions for contraceptive use among women experiencing homelessness. The Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model can examine health behavior cognitions, while acknowledging the macro-level context. Therefore, this study explored the IMB characteristics related to contraception use among women experiencing homelessness.
METHODS: We conducted interview

Even though contraceptive coverage expands under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, reducing disparities in contraceptive access and provision requires that all providers assess their patient's reproductive life plans and that health systems work to minimize institutional and socioeconomic barriers. In this article, the challenges of providing equal access to contraceptive care, as well as recommendations for encouraging the use of effective contraception among all reproductive age women are reviewed.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) at conception is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. International guidelines address antenatal care, but contraception counseling and risk assessment are not addressed. Data on healthcare professionals' guidance for women with IBD regarding contraception are scarce. We aimed to describe contraceptive use, preferences, knowledge, and barriers among women with IBD.
METHODS: A 34-item questionnaire was administered to female IBD patients aged 18-45. Disease control was measured using PRO-2 and IBD-control questionnaire, and co

Contraceptive use in adolescence remains a challenging issue. Adolescents are at high risk of unintended pregnancies and sexual transmitted infections. During the past few decades intrauterine devices are recommended from global health organization, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and World Health Organization as a method of contraception for adolescents. Intrauterine devices are part of the long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) and include the copper bearing device (CU-IUD) and the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the implementation of a program that provides long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) services within school-based health centers (SBHCs) and to identify barriers and facilitators to implementation as reported by SBHC clinicians and administrators, public health officials, and community partners.
METHODS: We conducted 14 semistructured interviews with key informants involved in the implementation of LARC services. Key informants included SBHC clinicians and administrators, public health officials, and community partners. We used a content

Women experiencing reproductive coercion (RC) report more unintended pregnancies and mental health symptoms that can influence contraceptive use patterns. We examined associations between RC and contraceptive use among intimate partner violence (IPV) exposed women aged 18-35 (N = 283). We tested depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and co-morbid depression and PTSD as effect modifiers. Though no association was found between RC and contraception, PTSD significantly modified this relationship. Among Black women (n = 112), those reporting RC and either PTSD or comorbid PTSD and dep

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa bear a disproportionate burden of HIV. Long-acting injectable PrEP (LAI-PrEP) may address adherence challenges associated with daily oral PrEP, but social and structural barriers threaten real-world implementation. Drawing on parallels with injectable contraception and multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs), this systematic review synthesizes evidence on barriers and facilitators to LAI-PrEP use among AGYW in sub-Saharan Africa. Following PRISMA guidelines, peer-reviewed studies published January 2015 to February 2025 were iden

BACKGROUND: Across most of Australia, the role of community pharmacists in contraceptive care has been unchanged since 2004. To understand their current scope of practice and potential for practice advancements, we examined community pharmacists' contraceptive knowledge and their attitudes, practices and perceived barriers to and benefits of contraceptive counselling provision.
METHODS: A nationwide postal survey was conducted between September and December 2020. We contacted a state/territory-stratified sample of 2149 community pharmacies and limited eligibility to one pharmacist per pharmac

BACKGROUND: Women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at risk of unintended pregnancy and may experience barriers to accessing contraception such as social stigma, concern for drug-drug interactions with HIV regimens, cost, and access to care. As pharmacist prescriptive authority for contraception becomes more prevalent, pharmacists may play a role in expanding access to contraception for women with HIV. Little is known about perspectives in this population regarding pharmacists prescribing contraception.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of our study was to explore participants' experiences

CONTEXT: Although Russian women have adequate knowledge of modern contraceptives, their level of use of these methods has been low, and abortion rates remain relatively high.
METHODS: In 1994-2003, sexually active women aged 18-49 were interviewed about their contraceptive use as part of the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey. Trends in contraceptive use were examined. Multivariate analyses were conducted to identify characteristics associated with reliable contraceptive use (IUD use or consistent oral contraceptive use) in 1994 and 2003.
RESULTS: In each year, about 25% of sexually activ

OBJECTIVE: Requiring a pelvic examination before prescribing oral contraception poses an unnecessary barrier to contraceptive access. Medical guidelines have outlined the safety of oral contraception provision without a pelvic examination, yet little is known about the practices of clinicians providing reproductive health care. Our purpose was to investigate clinicians' requirements for pelvic examination and what may account for practice differences.
METHODS: We administered a mailed survey to a national probability sample of obstetrician-gynecologists (ob-gyns), family medicine physicians,

CONTEXT: The extent to which racial and ethnic differences in method choice are associated with financial barriers is unclear. Understanding these associations may provide insight into how to address racial and ethnic disparities in unintended pregnancy.
METHODS: Claims data from the California Family PACT program, which provides free family planning services to low-income residents, were used to determine the proportions of women receiving each type of contraceptive method in 2001-2007. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify associations between women's race and ethni

Unintended pregnancy remains high in the United States, accounting for one-half of pregnancies. Both contraceptive nonuse and imperfect use contribute to unplanned pregnancies. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) have greater efficacy than shorter acting methods. Data from large studies show that unplanned pregnancy rates are lower among women using LARC. However, overall use of LARC is low; of the reproductive age women using contraception, less than 10% are LARC users. Barriers include lack of knowledge and high up-front cost, and prevent more widespread use. Overcoming these barrier

Abortion and contraception are essential components of reproductive healthcare. As 26 states are likely to severely restrict access to abortion following the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, access to emergency contraception will be more important than ever. Existing barriers to emergency contraception - including cost, obstacles to over-the-counter purchase, low awareness and availability of the most effective options, myths about safety and mechanism of action - already substantially limit access. Proactive solutions include public information campaigns

OBJECTIVE: To identify preferences for and use of short-acting hormonal (e.g., oral contraceptives, injectable contraception) or long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) among community college students in Texas.
PARTICIPANTS: Female community college students, ages 18 to 24, at risk of pregnancy, sampled in Fall 2014 or Spring 2015 (N = 966).
METHODS: We assessed characteristics associated with preference for and use of short-acting hormonal or LARC methods (i.e., more-effective contraception).
RESULTS: 47% preferred short-acting hormonal methods and 21% preferred LARC, compared to 21%

OBJECTIVE: Currently available contraceptive methods do not meet the needs of all users. We sought to explore preferences of potential end-users regarding an on-demand, non-hormonal female contraceptive currently under development, using a web-based survey.
STUDY DESIGN: We recruited respondents for an exploratory survey via web link on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Individuals were eligible if they were 18-44 years of age, identified as cis-gender female, were English-speaking, not pregnant, and had used barrier contraception previously. Respondents provided demographic characteristics and

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to survey US servicewomen on their contraceptive access and use during deployment.
METHODS: Between June 2016 and July 2017, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey among a convenience sample of current and former members of the US Military, National Guard and Reserves who had a deployment ending in 2010 or later. Participants were asked open-ended and closed-ended questions about their demographics and contraceptive use and access before and during their last deployment. Descriptive statistics were run on closed-ended questions and responses to

CONTEXT: Women frequently experience barriers to obtaining effective contraceptives from clinic-based providers. Allowing nurses to dispense hormonal methods during home visits may be a way to reduce barriers and improve -effective contraceptive use.
METHODS: Between 2009 and 2013, a sample of 337 low-income, pregnant clients of a nurse home-visit program in Washington State were randomly selected to receive either usual care or enhanced care in which nurses were permitted to provide hormonal contraceptives postpartum. Participants were surveyed at baseline and every three months postpartum f

To identify perceptions and attitudes about contraceptive side effects in young, low-income Latina adolescents through focus-group conversations. We conducted seven focus-group discussions with Latino females in an outpatient clinic and community setting. Qualitative methodology was used to analyze data. Participants were recruited from the outpatient gynecology clinic at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and from the Easter Seals Day Care Center. Women were recruited if they were Latino and between the ages of 18 and 26 years (N = 40). Participants cited both perceptions of side effects
