[Intention, attitude, subjective norms and perception of control in Spanish adolescents about using Double Dutch].

With adolescence, boys and girls reach their sexual maturity and initiate their sexual encounters. They very frequently adopt risk behaviors as they tend not to use any contraceptive methods. Today's trend in relation to contraceptive methods is to recommend the combined utilization of condom and pill. In comparison to other methods, this last one, known as the Double Dutch (DD) method, has the advantage of preventing pregnancy and STD's, at the same time it increases the efficiency of contraception. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior the purpose of the study was to measure the intention, at

A randomized controlled trial of an intervention delivered by mobile phone text message to increase the acceptability of effective contraception among young women in Palestine.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that mobile phone contraceptive behavioral interventions can increase knowledge and use of contraception, but other studies have failed to demonstrate a beneficial effect. The objective of this trial was to estimate the effect of a contraceptive behavioral intervention delivered by mobile phone text message on young Palestinian women's attitudes towards effective contraception. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial among women aged 18-24 years living in the West Bank, who were not using an effective method of contraception. The intervention group r

Risky sexual behaviors in adolescents and young adult women with type 1 diabetes: An overlooked problem.

The presence of unprotected sex activity in women living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who have insufficient glycemic control should be considered as a specific risky behavior. To evaluate risky behaviors, including unprotected sexual activity, sources of information and knowledge related to reproductive health in adolescents and young adult women with T1D (PwT1D) compared to a group of adolescents and young adult women without diabetes (Comparison group). PwT1D and the Comparison group completed a questionnaire with validated measures that assessed reproductive health. PwT1D (n = 115, age = 17.7

Prescription Contraception Use Among Psychiatric Inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health symptoms are known to affect contraceptive behavior. Psychiatrically hospitalized patients-those with severe symptoms-are a unique population that may have distinct patterns of contraception use; however, relevant data are currently lacking. This data paucity is notable, given the complex considerations of this population-including potential exposure to medications that are teratogens or interact with contraception. This study aimed to assess patterns of prescription contraception (PC) use and help guide contraceptive counseling in inpatient psychiatric settings. METH

Oral Contraceptives Modulate the Relationship Between Resting Brain Activity, Amygdala Connectivity and Emotion Recognition - A Resting State fMRI Study.

Recent research into the effects of hormonal contraceptives on emotion processing and brain function suggests that hormonal contraceptive users show (a) reduced accuracy in recognizing emotions compared to naturally cycling women, and (b) alterations in amygdala volume and connectivity at rest. To date, these observations have not been linked, although the amygdala has certainly been identified as core region activated during emotion recognition. To assess, whether volume, oscillatory activity and connectivity of emotion-related brain areas at rest are predictive of participant's ability to re

Factors influencing the contraceptive method choice: a university hospital experience.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors influencing behavior of women in choosing contraceptive methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 4022 women who were admitted to our clinic in a year, were the subjects in this current study for contraception choices. Relationship between the current contraceptive choice and the age, marital status, educational level, gravidity and induced abortions were evaluated. RESULTS: Current users of any contraceptive methods were found to make up thirty-three percent of the entire study population. The most preferred method of contraception was an intrauterine devic

Assessing Parents' Perceptions of Contraception for Their Adolescents in Communities of Color: A scoping review.

Reproductive health disparities disproportionately affect adolescents of color in the United States, particularly in contraceptive access, utilization, and knowledge. Because parents strongly shape adolescents' contraceptive behaviors, understanding their perspectives is essential for addressing inequities. This scoping review synthesized evidence on parental attitudes toward adolescent contraception in racially and ethnically diverse communities to inform culturally responsive interventions. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, seven databases were systematically searched for U.S.-based, peer rev

The relationship of self-concept and autonomy to oral contraceptive compliance among adolescent females.

Self-concept and autonomy are typically negotiated during adolescence, a time when many females also become sexually active. Nonuse and discontinuation of contraceptives by teenagers place them at high risk for pregnancy. The present study explores the relationship between these psychological factors and contraceptive noncompliance during adolescence. Fifty-five adolescent females beginning a contraceptive regimen were entered into the study. Compliance at four months after the initiation of an oral contraceptive was associated with scoring high on the Behavior Subscale of the Piers-Harris Sel

Perceptions of long-acting reversible contraception among women in an urban U.S. jail.

OBJECTIVE: Given incarcerated women's lack of access to contraception prior to, during, and post-incarceration and concerns of potential reproductive coercion in correctional settings, the objective was to explore incarcerated women's perspective of making provider-controlled methods of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) available in an U.S. urban jail. STUDY DESIGN: Using a concurrent mixed-methods approach, we explored contraceptive use and method choice prior to and after incarceration among women detained in a U.S. urban jail. Focus group discussions primarily focused on incarcer

Incorporating Method Dissatisfaction into Unmet Need for Contraception: Implications for Measurement and Impact.

While unmet need for contraception is commonly used to assess programmatic needs, it inadequately captures the complexity of fertility and contraceptive preferences, including women's satisfaction with their contraceptive method. In their 2019 commentary, Sarah Rominski and Rob Stephenson propose reclassifying dissatisfied current users as having an unmet need for contraception. As revising the current definition based on their proposal would require significant investment to update survey and monitoring systems, understanding the potential impact on current estimates of unmet need is critical

Is Client Reporting on Contraceptive Use Always Accurate? Measuring Consistency and Change with a Multicountry Study.

The consistency of self-reported contraceptive use over short periods of time is important for understanding measurement reliability. We assess the consistency of and change in contraceptive use using longitudinal data from 9,390 urban female clients interviewed in DR Congo, India, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso. Clients were interviewed in-person at a health facility and four to six months later by phone. We compared reports of contraceptive use at baseline with recall of baseline contraceptive use at follow-up. Agreement between these measures ranged from 59.1 percent in DR Congo to

Information needs on emergency contraception not being met.

During the 1980s, there was 2 prominent changes in family planning: more women went to general practitioners (GPs) for contraceptive advice and there was an upturn in the use of condoms due to safer sex campaigns in the mid-80s. In this study of 769 women requesting a pregnancy termination, the author's found that the greater use of condoms had appeared to increase the need for information about emergency contraception, but this was not being met. Patients advised by their GPs seemed to have a lower level of knowledge than those who obtained their contraception from clinics. The study, carried

Contraceptive care for the adolescent.

Despite recent improvements in rates of teen pregnancy, abortion, birth, and contraceptive use, effective contraceptive counseling for adolescents should be a high priority for the primary care provider in the office setting. Adolescent psychosocial risk screening and appropriate counseling about sexual decision-making is necessary. Contraceptive services visits include, relevant history, limited physical examination, provision of information, anticipatory guidance about sexual behaviors, and the provision of contraceptive methods. Teens should always be encouraged to use a male condom during s

Drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives and venous thromboembolism: an analysis of the FAERS database.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial evidence suggests that drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives may cause a higher risk of venous thrombotic events than earlier-generation oral contraceptives. METHODS: To gain insight into recent real-world implications, we conducted an analysis using the US Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System. RESULTS: Venous thrombotic events continue to be reported at a much higher rate with drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives than the general background. The disproportionality has been rising since 2010. The same behavior is not seen with l

Hormonal contraception. ACOG Technical bulletin. Number 198-October 1994 (replaces No. 106, July 1987) American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Oral, injectable, and implantable contraceptives offer women safe, effective, and reversible fertility regulation. In some cases, their use also confers important noncontraceptive benefits. By individualizing counseling and recommendations based on relevant behavioral and medical considerations, clinicians can maximize their patients' success with hormonal contraceptives. Even in women with relative contraindications to the use of hormonal contraceptives, the risks associated with pregnancy may be sufficiently great so as to warrant their use.

Do Sexual Minorities Receive Appropriate Sexual and Reproductive Health Care and Counseling?

CONTEXT: Sexual minority women (SMW) are less likely to use sexual and reproductive health care services and receive contraceptive counseling than their heterosexual peers. The role of recent sexual partners and the type of information provided when SMW access health services are unclear. METHODS: The National Survey of Family Growth 2006-2015 was used to document sexual orientation disparities in the use of sexual and reproductive health services and counseling in clinical settings among 20,703 women. We incorporate data on sexual partners in the past 12 months to investigate whether recent

The authors investigated the pregnancy outcomes, contraceptive behavior, and contraceptive needs of 80 female chronic psychiatric outpatients. Thirty-one percent of the patients reported they had had induced abortions. Of 75 children born, 60% were being reared by people other than the mothers. Thirty-three percent of the patients who had had intercourse during the preceding year and had not wanted to become pregnant reported not having used contraception at the time of last intercourse. The authors discuss the special contraceptive needs of chronic psychiatric patients and encourage psychiatr

Advance provision of emergency contraception for pregnancy prevention: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Advance provision of emergency contraception can circumvent some obstacles to timely use. We performed a meta-analysis to summarize randomized controlled trials evaluating advance provision of emergency contraception to explore effects on pregnancy rates, sexually transmitted infections, and sexual and contraceptive behaviors. DATA SOURCES: In August 2006, we searched CENTRAL, EMBASE, POPLINE, MEDLINE, a specialized emergency contraception article database, and contacted experts to identify published or unpublished trials. METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION: We included randomized control
