Immobilization induces changes in presynaptic control of group Ia afferents in healthy humans.

Neural plasticity occurs throughout adult life in response to maturation, use and disuse. Recent studies have documented that H-reflex amplitudes increase following a period of immobilization. To elucidate the mechanisms contributing to the increase in H-reflex size following immobilization we immobilized the left foot and ankle joint for 2 weeks in 12 able-bodied subjects. Disynaptic reciprocal inhibition of soleus (SOL) motoneurons and presynaptic control of SOL group Ia afferents was measured before and after the immobilization as well as following 2 weeks of recovery. Following immobilizat

Group intervention for women with pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy. A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Low back and pelvic pain is common in pregnancy and postpartum, but there is no well documented effect of treatment in pregnancy. The aim of the study was to assess whether a group intervention program for pregnant women with pelvic girdle pain has any effect on pain and daily function postpartum. METHODS: Pregnant women with pelvic pain between the 18th and 32nd week of gestation were invited to participate in a randomized clinical study. Among 958 examined women, 569 (59%) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Women randomized to the intervention group (n=275) participated in an edu

Scientific challenges for the quality control and production of group C meningococcal conjugate vaccines.

Recommendations (formerly known as requirements) for meningococcal polysaccharide vaccines were adopted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) Expert Committee on Biological Standardisation in 1976 and amended in 1978 and 1981. In clinical studies, these vaccines have been shown to have efficacy of at least 90% and have proved to be highly effective in vaccination programmes. Nevertheless, their inability to elicit protective responses in young infants or to induce good immunological memory has prevented their implementation in national infant immunisation schedules. Following the successful i

A controlled trial of riluzole in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS/Riluzole Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive motor neuron disease for which there is no adequate treatment. Some research suggests that the excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter glutamate may be involved in the pathogenesis. METHODS: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the antiglutamate agent riluzole, we conducted a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 155 outpatients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The dose of riluzole was 100 mg per day. Randomization was stratified according to the site of disease onset (the bulbar region or the limbs). The primary

Comparison of a community dysthymia sample at screening with a matched group of nondepressed community controls.

The primary goal of the study was to compare the psychosocial functioning of an untreated, community sample of DSM-III-R dysthymia subjects (N = 24) at screening to that of a matched sample of community nondepressed volunteers (N = 18) with no lifetime or current history of axis I disorders. Subjects were compared across a number of psychosocial indices. The dysthymics were found to be less sociable (introversion) and clinically high on neuroticism-instability, external in regard to their causal attributions, less stable for positive uncontrollable events and more stable and global for negativ

A controlled trial of fish oil in IgA nephropathy. Mayo Nephrology Collaborative Group.

BACKGROUND: The n-3 fatty acids in fish oil affect eicosanoid and cytokine production and therefore have the potential to alter renal hemodynamics and inflammation. The effects of fish oil could prevent immunologic renal injury in patients with IgA nephropathy. METHODS: In a multicenter, placebo-controlled, randomized trial we tested the efficacy of fish oil in patients with IgA nephropathy who had persistent proteinuria. The daily dose of fish oil was 12 g; the placebo was a similar dose of olive oil. Serum creatinine concentrations, elevated in 68 percent of the patients at base line, and c

Depth position of spontaneous venous pulsations in ocular hypertensives and control-group discs.

Spontaneous venous pulsation can be observed at the site of entry of retinal veins into the physiological cup of the optic disc. Although it has been speculated that spontaneous vessel pulsation is related to primary open-angle glaucoma, no evaluation has been done on the depth position of such a pulsation inside the cup and its relationship to the intraocular pressure. Using laser scanning tomography, we measured the depth position of the maximal spontaneous vessel pulsation inside the optic cup in 24 discs of 24 patients, including 15 ocular hypertensives and 9 controls. The two groups did n

Cognitive behavioural group therapy versus mindfulness-based stress reduction group therapy for intimate partner violence: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Violence in close relationships is a global public health problem and there is a need to implement therapeutic programs designed to help individuals who voluntarily seek help to reduce recurrent intimate partner violence. The effectiveness of such interventions in this population remains inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural group therapy (CBGT) vs mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) group therapy in reducing violent behavior amongst individuals who are violent in intimate partnerships and who voluntarily seek hel

Mindfulness and acceptance-based group therapy versus traditional cognitive behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Recent research has supported the use of mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to compare mindfulness and acceptance-based group therapy (MAGT) with cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) with respect to outcome. It was hypothesized that MAGT and CBGT would both be superior to a control group but not significantly different from one another. METHOD: Individuals (N = 137, mean age = 34 years, 54% female, 62% White, 20% Asian) diagnosed with SAD were randomly assigned to MAGT (n = 53), CB

Controlled transfer-reduction of functional groups with ethanol by their interaction strength with the oxygen vacancies.

Controlled reduction of functional groups remains a significant challenge in catalytic chemistry. In this study, we report a novel method for selectively reducing various functional groups using biomass-derived ethanol, mediated by oxygen vacancies in highly dispersed molybdenum oxide on nitrogen-doped carbon. Selectivity for the reduction of four representative substrates, sulfoxides, pyridine N-oxides, nitro compounds, and alkynes is successfully controlled via temperature, yielding the corresponding sulfides, pyridines, amines, and alkenes with high yields. Mechanistic studies indicate that

Protecting-Group-Controlled Radical Cascade to Quaternary α,β'-Diamino Ketones.

The 1,4-diamino-2-hydroxy motif found in HIV protease inhibitors motivates efficient access to quaternary α,β'-diamino ketones, yet classical C-N bond formation at the α- and β'-positions requires nitrogen sources of opposite polarity, a fundamental mismatch that forces stepwise synthesis. Here we report a protecting-group-controlled radical cascade that overcomes this polarity mismatch in a single operation. Under dirhodium(II) catalysis, N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) serves as a unified nitrogen source to generate an aminyl radical, which initiates a 1,2-carbon shift to a transient oxoca

Frequency of mesenteric panniculitis in an oncologic population: A multicenter comparative study with a control group.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare benign entity that affects the mesentery, often detected incidentally in an imaging examination. Its association with cancer is a controversial topic. The objective of the study was to determine the frequency of this condition in a known oncological population and compare it with that of a control population. METHODS: Cross-sectional, retrospective study, comparative with a control group. Patients referred for PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) staging for recently diagnosed cancer, who had not been treated and had no hist

Patient Characteristics Associated With Group Prenatal Care Attendance in a Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Group prenatal care (GPNC) represents a promising alternative to individual prenatal care (IPNC) for better perinatal outcomes. Some studies suggest better perinatal outcomes with more GPNC sessions attended. The present study sought to examine patient characteristics associated with higher or lower GPNC session attendance. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected in a single-site randomized controlled trial comparing GPNC to IPNC, focusing solely on patients assigned to GPNC. The outcome of interest was GPNC session attendance. Predictors evaluated included
