Human behavior lies somewhere between purely self-interested homo economicus and socially-motivated homo reciprocans. The factors that cause people to choose self-interest over costly cooperation can provide insights into human nature and are essential when designing institutions and policies that are meant to influence behavior. Alcohol consumption can shed light on the inflection point between selfish and selfless because it is commonly consumed and has global effects on the brain. The present study administered alcohol or placebo (N = 128), titrated to sex and weight, to examine its effect

The impact of teachers' verbal interventions upon the dyadic social interactions between 40 elementary school children with severe mental retardation and their regular-education peers was investigated. All interactions occurred in the context of a structured program designed to facilitate social interactions. Half of the dyads were further instructed in specific cooperative play behavior. Students' and teachers' behaviors were coded. Results showed that the intervention initially positively affected various social play behavior; however, these effects diminished or reversed themselves as the i

The Male Warrior Hypothesis (MWH) establishes that men's psychology has been shaped by inter-group competition to acquire and protect reproductive resources. In this context, sex-specific selective pressures would have favored cooperation with the members of one's group in combination with hostility towards outsiders. We investigate the role of developmental testosterone, as measured indirectly through static markers of prenatal testosterone (2D:4D digit ratio) and pubertal testosterone (body musculature and facial masculinity), on both cooperation and aggressive behavior in the context of int

Group choice refers to the distribution of group members between two choice alternatives over time. The ideal free distribution (IFD), an optimal foraging model from behavioral ecology, predicts that the ratio of foragers at two resource sites should equal the ratio of obtained resources, a prediction that is formally analogous to the matching law of individual choice, except that group choice is a social phenomenon. Two experiments investigated the usefulness of IFD analyses of human group choice and individual-based explanations that might account for the group-level events. Instead of nonhu

While solution generation and question-answer sequences are key to change in coaching, little is known about the role of questions with a solution-oriented agenda. Even less research exists on clients' (cooperative) responding activities. To breach this gap, we used Conversation Analysis to investigate responses to wh-questions for solution generation with a special focus on the continuum of (dis-)aligning and (dis-)affiliating responses and the degrees of clients' (un-)cooperativeness. The sequential analysis yielded five response categories: "no(n) answer," "repair initiation," "not answerin

Considering agents tend to interact preferentially with others adopting similar behaviors, this paper investigates the impact of similarity-based interaction mechanism on learning dynamics and evolution of strategies. We propose a novel evolution model for reactive strategies in which agents interact with similar partners within some threshold, forming a dynamically structural population. By combining exploitation and exploration, we analyze the evolution dynamics of cooperation under the influence of various payoff parameters and similarity thresholds. The results show that similarity-based i

Collective punishment and reward are usually regarded as two potential mechanisms to explain the evolution of cooperation. Both scenarios, however, seem problematic to understand cooperative behavior, because they can raise the second-order free-rider problem and many organisms are not able to discriminate less cooperating individuals. Even though they have been proved to increase cooperation, there has been a debate about which one being more effective. To address this issue, we resort to the N-player evolutionary snowdrift game (NESG), where a collective punishment/reward mechanism is added

This study examined whether coparenting during toddlerhood predicts children's later symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, affective disorder, and somatic complaints. When children were 2 years old, 108 middle-class nonclinical families were observed in triadic interactions to assess two domains of dyadic coparenting (competitive and cooperative), as well as each parent's individual competitive behavior toward the spouse. Teachers and mothers reported children's symptoms of psychological problems at age 7. Independent of cooperative coparenting an

Cooperation is a paradox: Why should one perform a costly behavior only to increase the fitness of another? Human societies, in which individuals cooperate with genetically unrelated individuals on a considerably larger scale than most mammals do, are especially puzzling in this regard. Recently, the threat of punishment has been given substantial attention as one of the mechanisms that could help sustain human cooperation in such situations. Nevertheless, using punishment to explain cooperation only leads to further questions: Why spend precious resources to penalize free-riders, especially i

Background: Global health partnerships between academic institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are increasingly recognized as essential mechanisms for strengthening health systems in low-resource settings. Despite their proliferation, few partnerships demonstrate long-term, equitable collaboration grounded in established ethical frameworks. Objectives: To describe and evaluate a 20-year partnership between Lwala Community Alliance, a community-based NGO in western Kenya, and Vanderbilt University in the United States, using the Brocher Declaration principles as an evaluative fr

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis disease with oral and genital aphthous ulceration, uveitis, skin manifestations, arthritis and neurological involvement. Many investigators have published articles on BD in the last two decades since introduction of diagnosis criteria by the International Study Group for Behçet's Disease in 1990. However, there is no scientometric analysis available for this increasing amount of literature.
METHODS: A scientometric analysis method was used to achieve a view of scientific articles about BD which were published between 1990 and 2010, by

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to compare the efficacy and safety of two doses of oral midazolam (0.5 mg/kg and 0.75 mg/kg) on the same children when no cooperation could be achieved with the 0.5 mg/kg dose.
METHODS: Twenty-three healthy three- to eight-year-olds who were initially unable to tolerate dental treatment using nonpharmacologic behavioral management (sometimes in combination with nitrous oxide) participated in the study. Level of sedation, cooperation, parental satisfaction, parental prediction of child's future anxiety, and outcome of sedation with the two doses were eval

Potent saponin adjuvants such as QS-21, used in clinically approved vaccine formulations, remain limited by intrinsic hemolytic activity and restricted aqueous stability, motivating biomaterials strategies aimed at regulating their interfacial behavior while preserving immunostimulatory function. Here, we show that when combined with amphiphilic PEO-PPO triblock copolymers (P123 and F127), QS-21 appears to participate in cooperative supramolecular integration into polymeric micelles rather than behaving as a passively encapsulated cargo. This architecture-dependent organization gives rise to s

Animals within social groups respond to costs and benefits of sociality by adjusting the proportion of time they spend in close proximity to other individuals in the group (cohesion). Variation in cohesion between individuals, in turn, shapes important group-level processes such as subgroup formation and fission-fusion dynamics. Although critical to animal sociality, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing cohesion remains a gap in our knowledge of cooperative behavior in animals. We tracked 574 individuals from six species within the genus Canis in 15 countries on four contin

Informed by the almost unimaginable unmet need for cardiac surgery in the developing regions of the world, leading surgeons, cardiologists, editors in chief of the major cardiothoracic journals as well as representatives of medical industry and government convened in December 2017 to address this unacceptable disparity in access to care. The ensuing "Cape Town Declaration" constituted a clarion call to cardiac surgical societies to jointly advocate the strengthening of sustainable, local cardiac surgical capacity in the developing world. The Cardiac Surgery Intersociety Alliance (CSIA) was thu

A platinum(II) acetylide-based bolaamphiphile equipped with two peripheral B18C6 moieties has been successfully prepared, which demonstrates cooperative recognition behavior toward l-alanine ester salt in chloroform. In a polar methanol/chloroform (3/1, v/v) medium, the amino acid additives influence the aggregation of the bolaamphiphile significantly, leading to the morphological transition from nanospherical to disordered structures. The adaptive properties of the current host-guest binary system will benefit the development of stimuli-responsive supramolecular materials.

Most studies on the evolution of cooperation focus on single-group settings, whereas real-world interactions often occur within nested group structures and are shaped by pre-existing social relationships. The coexistence of cross-level public-goods allocation, dynamically evolving social bonds, and heterogeneous helping responses creates multiple feedback channels, making the stability of cooperation dependent on both group structure and relationship dynamics. To address these limitations, this study develops a two-stage game model that incorporates social bonds to characterize relationship st

OBJECTIVE: Parental Friendship Coaching (PFC) teaches parents to coach their children in friendship skills. This paper examines whether PFC fosters positive peer contagion processes (i.e. dyadic mutuality) and reduces negative peer contagion processes (i.e. coercive joining) within the friendships of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
METHOD: Participants were 134 families of children with ADHD and peer problems (age 6-11 years; 69% male; 72% white) at two Canadian sites, randomized to PFC or CARE (an active comparison intervention). Children were observed in the l

Background and Objectives: Children with mild intellectual disability (MID) frequently experience difficulties during dental treatment due to increased sensitivity to environmental stimuli and limited cooperation. Sensory-adapted dental environments (SADE) have been proposed as a strategy to improve the dental experience of patients with neurodevelopmental conditions; however, evidence regarding their effectiveness in children with MID remains limited. This randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effects of a sensory-adapted dental environment on pain-related behaviors and treatment co

Some Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) strains harbor a prophage within the comK gene, which renders it inactive. During Lm infection of macrophage cells, the prophage turns into a molecular switch, promoting comK gene expression and therefore Lm intracellular growth. During this process, the prophage does not produce infective phages or cause bacterial lysis, suggesting it has acquired an adaptive behavior suited to the pathogenic lifestyle of its host. In this study, we demonstrate that this non-classical phage behavior, named active lysogeny, relies on a transcriptional response that is specific
