Spectrofluorimetric determination of thioridazine and flupentixol in dosage forms; application to content uniformity test.

A reliable, sensitive, cheap and non-extractive spectrofluorimetric method has been developed and validated for determination of thioridazine and flupentixol based on ternary complex formation with eosin and lead(II) in the presence of methylcellulose as surfactant at pH 3.2. Under the optimum conditions, the quantitative quenching effect of investigated drugs on the native fluorescence of eosin has been investigated. The quenching of the eosin fluorescence was measured at 517 nm after excitation at 462 nm. The different experimental parameters affecting the development and stability of the re

Surgical management of double-outlet right ventricle with subaortic ventricular septal defect.

Double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) and subaortic ventricular septal defect (VSD) is defined anatomically as a defect where the entire pulmonary trunk and at least half of the aorta arises from the right ventricle (RV) and the VSD is most closely aligned with the aorta. The surgical management of DORV and subaortic VSD usually results in a 2 ventricle repair where the left ventricular outflow is diverted via the VSD to the aorta. Pulmonary and/or subpulmonary obstruction is found in a large portion of these patients and requires relief at the time of repair. Resection of subpulmonary muscular

Modeling the Adsorption of Mercury(II) on (Hydr)oxides II: alpha-FeOOH (Goethite) and Amorphous Silica.

The surface complexation model is used to describe sorption experiments of inorganic mercury(II) in the presence of an amorphous silica, Aerosil 200, or an iron (hydr)oxide, the goethite alpha-FeOOH (Bayferrox 910). In the simulations, one assumes the formation of a monodentate surface complex &tbond;S&bond;OHg(+) and of ternary surface complexes with OH(-) surface groups, &tbond;S&bond;OHgOH and &tbond;S&bond;OHgCl, when chlorides are present in solution. Participation of the complex &tbond;S&bond;OHgCl has been especially evidenced. The mercury(II) surface complexation on oxides can be descr

Review OSINT tool for social engineering.

In recent years, we observed an increase in cyber threats, especially social engineering attacks. By social engineering, we mean a set of techniques and tools to collect information about a person or target to extort sensitive information. Such information might be used for (industrial) espionage, to blackmail the user, or represent the starting point to perform malicious cyber attacks against the individual or, more often, against the organization they work for. The human factor is often the most vulnerable element in the security of any system, and the mass of information we disseminate onli

Syringomyelia From Extramedullary Compression: Resolution After Microsurgical Resection of a High-Cervical Spine Schwannoma: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Syringomyelia with compression at the foramen magnum is a well-studied subject with a pathophysiological hypothesis explaining syrinx development and treatment.1,2 However, compression of the cervical cord, as in cervical spondylosis, can also lead to cavitation in the spinal cord.3,4 Although the association of intramedullary spinal cord tumors with syringomyelia is well known,5 the association of extramedullary tumors with syringomyelia is scarcely reported, and it is of unknown mechanism and uncertain outcomes regarding syrinx resolution. Syringomyelia is reported to be associated with intr

The Real Threat of Deepfake Pornography: A Review of Canadian Policy.

Deepfakes may refer to algorithmically synthesized material wherein the face of a person is superimposed onto another body. To date, most deepfakes found online are pornographic, with the people depicted in them rarely consenting to their creation and publicization. Deepfakes leave anyone with an online presence vulnerable to victimization. As a testament to policy often being reactionary to antisocial behavior, current Canadian legislation offers no clear recourse to those who are victimized by deepfake pornography. We aim to provide a critical review of the legal mechanisms and remedies in p

Expressed Emotions and Depressive Symptoms in Caregivers of Adolescents with First-Onset Anorexia Nervosa-A Long-Term Investigation over 2.5 Years.

OBJECTIVE: High levels of expressed emotions (EE) and depressive symptoms (DS) are often found in caregivers of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). Both parameters are considered to influence AN symptoms of the patient. METHODS: One hundred seventy adolescent women with AN and their caregivers were assessed at admission, discharge, at 1-year and 2.5-year follow up to evaluate AN symptoms of the patient and EE and DS of caregivers. RESULTS: The EE and DS were elevated at admission and decreased during treatment, criticism (as part of EE) exhibited again at the 2.5-year follow up. Caregivers

Mental capacity to consent to treatment and the association with outcome: a longitudinal study in patients with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Relevance of diminished mental capacity in anorexia nervosa (AN) to course of disorder is unknown. AIMS: To examine prognostic relevance of diminished mental capacity in AN. METHOD: A longitudinal study was conducted in 70 adult female patients with severe AN. At baseline, mental capacity was assessed by psychiatrists, and clinical and neuropsychological data (decision-making) were collected. After 1 and 2 years, clinical and neuropsychological assessments were repeated, and remission and admission rates were calculated. RESULTS: People with AN with diminished mental capacity ha

To Go or Not to Go: A Proof of Concept Study Testing Food-Specific Inhibition Training for Women with Eating and Weight Disorders.

Inefficient food-specific inhibitory control is a potential mechanism that underlies binge eating in bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Go/no-go training tools have been developed to increase inhibitory control over eating impulses. Using a within-subjects design, this study examined whether one session of food-specific go/no-go training, versus general inhibitory control training, modifies eating behaviour. The primary outcome measure was food consumption on a taste test following each training session. Women with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder had small non-significant red

The Impact of Self-Reported Impulsivity on the Course of Weight Is Mediated by Disinhibited Eating.

This study investigates the impact of impulsivity and the mediating role of disinhibited eating behaviour (DEB) on weight and weight trajectories in a large data set including obese non-treatment seeking individuals (obese control, n = 138) and obese individuals who were either receiving a conventional treatment program (n = 227) or bariatric surgery (n = 123). Data was assessed one, 4 and 9 years after baseline including self-reports for impulsivity and DEB. Results suggest a significant association between impulsivity and body mass index, which is partially mediated by DEB. Longitudinally, t

Juror Decision-making in Death Penalty Sentencing when Presented with Defendant's History of Child Abuse or Neglect.

Previous studies have found aggravating, mitigating, and null effects of defendant histories of abuse and neglect on punishment preferences in capital sentencing. Perceiving these defendants as more dangerous, jurors may be more likely to favor the death penalty when such evidence is presented. This is counter to the intuition that abuse or neglect reduces culpability, and therefore mitigates the severity of punishment. We investigated the effect of defendant childhood physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect on the probability of a prospective juror preferring the death penalty in an between-

Spelling and Morphology in Dyslexia: A Developmental Study Across the School Years.

The current study examined the effect of morphological knowledge on spelling development in Hebrew-speaking schoolchildren, adolescents and adults with dyslexia, compared with typically developing (TD) peers. Participants were 238 Hebrew-speaking readers of five grade levels of whom 139 were TD and 99 had developmental dyslexia (DD). Participants were tested on a function letter spelling task, a phonological awareness task and a morphological awareness task. The overall picture that emerged from the results is that performance on all measures increased with grade level, with TD participants al

On assessing bioequivalence and interchangeability between generics based on indirect comparisons.

As more and more generics become available in the market place, the safety/efficacy concerns may arise as the result of interchangeably use of approved generics. However, bioequivalence assessment for regulatory approval among generics of the innovative drug product is not required. In practice, approved generics are often used interchangeably without any mechanism of safety monitoring. In this article, based on indirect comparisons, we proposed several methods to assessing bioequivalence and interchangeability between generics. The applicability of the methods and the similarity assumptions w

Meaningful Memory in Acute Anorexia Nervosa Patients-Comparing Recall, Learning, and Recognition of Semantically Related and Semantically Unrelated Word Stimuli.

OBJECTIVE: It is unclear whether observed memory impairment in anorexia nervosa (AN) depends on the semantic structure (categorized words) of material to be encoded. We aimed to investigate the processing of semantically related information in AN. METHOD: Memory performance was assessed in a recall, learning, and recognition test in 27 adult women with AN (19 restricting, 8 binge-eating/purging subtype; average disease duration: 9.32 years) and 30 healthy controls using an extended version of the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, applying semantically related and unrelated word stimuli. Early Maladaptive Schemas in Eating Disordered Patients With or Without Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.

This study investigates early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) in function of eating disorder (ED) subtypes (restrictive/bulimic) and the presence/absence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Female inpatients (N = 491) completed the Young Schema Questionnaire and the Self-Injury Questionnaire. The influence of ED subtype and the presence/absence of NSSI and their interaction on the EMS were investigated by means of a MANCOVA. The results showed main effects of ED subtype and the presence of NSSI on EMS. Patients with bulimia scored significantly higher on insufficient self-control and emotional depr

A Lack of Clinical Effect of High-frequency rTMS to Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex on Bulimic Symptoms: A Randomised, Double-blind Trial.

Studies suggest that stimulation of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) reduces food craving in bulimic patients, but evidence supporting repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a therapeutic tool is lacking. We investigated the safety and therapeutic efficacy of an adjunct high-frequency rTMS programme targeting the left DLPFC. Forty-seven women with bulimia nervosa were randomised to a real or sham stimulation group. The real group underwent 10 rTMS sessions, each consisting of 20 trains of 5 seconds with 55-second intervals between trains, at a frequency of 10 Hz.
