Marine debris - An emerging threat to the reef areas of Gulf of Mannar, India.

Underwater survey was conducted to assess the accumulation and impact of marine debris in the reef areas of Gulf of Mannar in southeast India. A combination of roving diver technique and belt transect method was applied for the assessment, which was conducted during the period between February 2018 and March 2019. An estimated total reef area of 1152 m2 has been affected by marine debris. Abandoned fishing nets were found to constitute the major portion of 43.17 ± 5.48% of the marine debris. Live corals were found to be dominant substrates for marine debris with 39.11%. The average prevalence

In situ enhancement of coral larval settlement using acoustic enrichment, engineered habitats and living materials.

Worldwide reef ecosystem degradation is inspiring efforts to enhance in-situ coral larvae settlement onto degraded or artificial reefs. Here we simultaneously test three approaches for enhancing settlement over two weeks in Kāne'ohe Bay, O'ahu, Hawai'i. Nineteen artificial structures, mimicking natural reef mesoscale roughness, were deployed along two transect lines at distances between 1 and 42 m from an "acoustic enrichment" underwater speaker broadcasting healthy reef sound. Twelve additional cinder blocks supporting micro-habitat structures designed to attenuate flow were also deployed at

The contingent advantage of photosymbiosis in coral evolution.

The ecological success of modern reef-building corals is rooted in photosymbiosis, yet its macroevolutionary benefit remains unclear. Analyzing the Phanerozoic record of inferred zooxanthellate (Z) and azooxanthellate (AZ) corals over geologic time scales using Bayesian methods, we identify a fundamental shift in diversification dynamics and their drivers across the Paleozoic-Mesozoic transition. Although Z corals dominate modern tropical reef ecosystems, their Paleozoic counterparts were outpaced by AZ forms and showed failed recoveries after the Late Devonian mass extinction. We found Z cora

Early life stages of stress-tolerant corals (Favites spp.) exhibit tolerance to acute thermal stress.

The Bolinao-Anda Reef Complex (BARC) in northwestern Philippines is one of the most heavily impacted reef systems in the Philippines, experiencing recurring marine heat waves and declining water quality due to coastal development and mariculture. As ocean warming and declining water quality continue, stress-tolerant coral species are expected to become increasingly dominant. Understanding how these corals respond to elevated temperatures in the early stages is critical for predicting future reef trajectories. In this study, we examined survival and development of embryos, settlement and surviv

New insights into carbon acquisition and exchanges within the coral-dinoflagellate symbiosis under NH4+ and NO3- supply.

Anthropogenic nutrient enrichment affects the biogeochemical cycles and nutrient stoichiometry of coastal ecosystems and is often associated with coral reef decline. However, the mechanisms by which dissolved inorganic nutrients, and especially nitrogen forms (ammonium versus nitrate) can disturb the association between corals and their symbiotic algae are subject to controversial debate. Here, we investigated the coral response to varying N : P ratios, with nitrate or ammonium as a nitrogen source. We showed significant differences in the carbon acquisition by the symbionts and its allocation

Changes in Caribbean coral disease prevalence after the 2005 bleaching event.

Bleaching events and disease epizootics have increased during the past decades, suggesting a positive link between these 2 causes in producing coral mortality. However, studies to test this hypothesis, integrating a broad range of hierarchical spatial scales from habitats to distant localities, have not been conducted in the Caribbean. In this study, we examined links between bleaching intensity and disease prevalence collected from 6 countries, 2 reef sites for each country, and 3 habitats within each reef site (N = 6 x 2 x 3 = 36 site-habitat combinations) during the peak of bleaching in 200

Standardizing deoxygenation studies in coral biology.

Deoxygenation, the global loss of biologically available oxygen (O2) from the world's oceans, presents a pervasive and intensifying threat for reef-building corals that will require coordinated efforts to understand and manage. However, recent expansion of coral deoxygenation experimentation has produced methodological gaps, limiting collective knowledge generation. Here, we show that growing divergence in this field arises primarily from differences in focal phenotypes, deoxygenation exposures, and experimental execution that together prevent biological from technical variation from being dis

Global gradients of coral exposure to environmental stresses and implications for local management.

BACKGROUND: The decline of coral reefs globally underscores the need for a spatial assessment of their exposure to multiple environmental stressors to estimate vulnerability and evaluate potential counter-measures. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This study combined global spatial gradients of coral exposure to radiation stress factors (temperature, UV light and doldrums), stress-reinforcing factors (sedimentation and eutrophication), and stress-reducing factors (temperature variability and tidal amplitude) to produce a global map of coral exposure and identify areas where exposure depends on

Potential role of viruses in white plague coral disease.

White plague (WP)-like diseases of tropical corals are implicated in reef decline worldwide, although their etiological cause is generally unknown. Studies thus far have focused on bacterial or eukaryotic pathogens as the source of these diseases; no studies have examined the role of viruses. Using a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and 454 pyrosequencing, we compared 24 viral metagenomes generated from Montastraea annularis corals showing signs of WP-like disease and/or bleaching, control conspecific corals, and adjacent seawater. TEM was used for visual inspection of dis

Response and Plasticity of a Cleaning Mutualism Following Short Term Reductions in Habitat Availability.

Species interactions, facilitated by animal behaviour, drive global biodiversity, yet species interactions are being disrupted by environmental change across ecosystems. On coral reef ecosystems, cleaning mutualisms where a 'cleaner' species removes parasites from a 'client' species at dedicated cleaning 'stations' on live coral are directly impacted by ongoing declines in live coral due to environmental change. Using cleaning mutualisms as a model system, we hypothesised that reduced habitat availability will result in a decline in mutualism-associated behavioural expression. Through an in si

An efficient coral survey method based on a large-scale 3-D structure model obtained by Speedy Sea Scanner and U-Net segmentation.

Over the last 3 decades, a large portion of coral cover has been lost around the globe. This significant decline necessitates a rapid assessment of coral reef health to enable more effective management. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for coral cover estimation and demonstrate its viability. A large-scale 3-D structure model, with resolutions in the x, y and z planes of 0.01 m, was successfully generated by means of a towed optical camera array system (Speedy Sea Scanner). The survey efficiency attained was 12,146 m2/h. In addition, we propose a segmentation method utilizing U-Ne

Simultaneous quantification of Pacific ciguatoxins in fish blood using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a food intoxication caused by exposure to ciguatoxins (CTXs) in coral reef fish. Rapid analytical methods have been developed recently to quantify Pacific-CTX-1 (P-CTX-1) in fish muscle, but it is destructive and can cause harm to valuable live coral reef fish. Also fish muscle extract was complex making CTX quantification challenging. Not only P-CTX-1, but also P-CTX-2 and P-CTX-3 could be present in fish, contributing to ciguatoxicity. Therefore, an analytical method for simultaneous quantification of P-CTX-1, P-CTX-2, and P-CTX-3 in whole blood of marketed

Fine-scale geographic risk assessment of oxybenzone sunscreen pollution within Hanauma Bay using hydrodynamic characterization and modeling.

Hanauma Bay's coral reef system is threatened by sunscreen pollution. Understanding the hydrodynamic nature of the bay is crucial for understanding the transport and fate of pollutants within the bay. This study conducted a comprehensive hydrodynamic analysis, revealing significant aspects of current patterns and their influence on sunscreen pollutant behavior. The analysis demonstrated the formation of flows that drive currents parallel to the shoreline, resulting in increased pollutant retention time over sensitive reef areas. Direct flushing currents were identified as playing a role in red

Spectral-YOLOv13: A Dual-Domain Vision-Mamba Sensing Framework for Fine-Grained Coral Health Assessment and Continuous Ecological Forecasting.

Coral reefs are among the most important and vulnerable marine ecosystems worldwide. AI-powered underwater visual monitoring has become essential for effective reef conservation, yet current methods still face severe limitations: spectral ambiguity caused by underwater turbidity, fine-grained confusion in early coral health assessment, and discrete forecasting models that cannot represent continuous ecological degradation dynamics. To address these issues, we propose Spectral-YOLOv13, a dual-domain vision-Mamba sensing framework for high-precision coral health evaluation and continuous ecologi

Critical thresholds of adult patch density and spacing during coral fertilization.

Climate change and other anthropogenic stressors have severe impacts on the ecological functioning of marine ecosystems by causing widespread declines in population sizes and, for surviving individuals, limiting the capacity for population recovery through sexual reproduction. Ecological theory suggests that affected populations can suffer local extinction because of Allee effects, where reduced population densities prevent gamete encounters, resulting in reproductive failure. Without understanding the relationship between the density or spacing of spawning individuals and fertilization succes

A neuroevolution-driven agent-based model of coral larvae settlement.

Coral reefs face significant threats due to climate change and human activities, which require innovative approaches to study and protect these ecosystems. Successful settlement is the bottleneck linking a reef's free-swimming larvae to the benthic community, ultimately determining the next generation of corals and the long-term resilience of the entire ecosystem. This work introduces an agent-based model (ABM) driven by neuroevolution (NE) to simulate coral larval settlement behavior under various environmental conditions. Inspired by biological processes, the model combines sensory input wit

Spatial variability in distribution and prevalence of Caribbean scleractinian coral and octocoral diseases. I. Community-level analysis.

Geographic assessments of coral diseases are needed to understand their local and geographic spatial-temporal variability. Coral and octocoral diseases and their prevalence were assessed along 4 permanent 10 x 2 m band-transects in each of 3 depth habitats (<4, 5-12 and >15 m) in each of 2 reefs in each of 6 countries across the wider Caribbean during the summer and fall of 2005. A permutational multivariate analysis of variance was used to test variability of major diseases and community level disease prevalence in corals and octocorals among habitats, reefs and countries. The most common and

Reef fish assemblages on Acropora patches in the Colombian Caribbean: resistance to reef degradation.

Coral reefs are crucial habitats for many fish species because they serve as feeding and shelter sites. However, due to their sensitivity to environmental changes, reef degradation has led to a drastic decline in fish and reef assemblages, which has also been reflected in associated economic activities. The loss of branching corals Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis has reached up to 90% in the Colombian Caribbean, resulting in a reduction in the abundance and diversity of associated fish populations. During two time periods (2011-2012 and 2023-2024) across the Colombian Caribbean, fish assoc

Transmission of stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) in simulated ballast water confirms the potential for ship-born spread.

Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) remains an unprecedented epizootic disease, representing a substantial threat to the persistence and health of coral reef ecosystems in the Tropical Western Atlantic since its first observation near Miami, Florida in 2014. In addition to transport between adjacent reefs indicative of waterborne pathogen(s) dispersing on ocean currents, it has spread throughout the Caribbean to geographically- and oceanographically-isolated reefs, in a manner suggestive of ship and ballast water transmission. Here we evaluate the potential for waterborne transmission of S

A new species of the feather star Capillaster within C. multiradiatus species complex (Crinoidea, Comatulidae) in Palau and the Great Barrier Reef.

The feather star Capillaster AH Clark, 1909 (Crinoidea, Comatulidae) is a common feather star on coral reefs of the entire Indo-West Pacific region ranging from the Red Sea in the west to reefs of the central Pacific. Extensive studies of crinoids from the 1970s to 2000s by SCUBA diving encountered Capillaster, identified as C. multiradiatus (L., 1758) on reefs in the Palau Islands, Micronesia, and around Lizard Island (northern Great Barrier Reef [GBR], central GBR reefs (Rib Reef, John Brewer Reef, Davies Reef), reefs at Heron Island (southern GBR), and other sites within the Coral Triangle
